I used 5v5 stats from 2010-11 through 2014-15 looking at forwards in the top 50% of goals per game (0.09 GPG), top 25% of hits per game (1.56 HpG) and top 50% in hits differential per game (0.14). Recognizing that hits are a biased stat and that hits don't include all physicality, I thought it would be sufficient considering the timeframe and application.

78 total active players fit those parameters with 9 rookies (<20 games played) and 5 AHL players (3 rookie players are also AHL players).

Of those 78:
  • Pens Players (3): Megna*, Comeau, Kunitz, Arcobello
  • Franchise players / captains (7): Landeskog, Getzlaf, Jamie Benn, D Brown, Ovechkin, Doan, Backes
  • New Contracts (9): Kreider, Bjugstad, N Foligno, Kulemin, Dubinsky, Callahan, Komarov, Wingels, Garbutt
  • Young players (Tier 1) (6): Trocheck, Jenner, Girgensons, Zibanejad, Niederreiter, E Kane
  • Young players (Tier 2) (5): Paquette, Jaskin, Lowry, Colborne, Marcus Foligno
  • Rookies (8): B Ritchie, Schaller, Pakarinen, Rendulic, Dano, Aliu*, Dziurzynski*, McMillan*
  • Unlikely to be Available (9): Stoll, Simmonds, Clutterbuck, B Schenn*, Lucic, A Lee*, Zack Kassian*, J Persson*(R), J Staal
  • Don't want (10): C Neil, B Morrow, Fisher, Clarkson, Setoguchi, T Ruutu, Greening, Jamie McGinn (I), Slater, Clowe (I)
  • AHL Players (4): Colin McDonald, Chad Larose, Raffi Torres, Ryan Malone
  • UFA (5): Beleskey (ANA), J Hayes (FLA), E Cole (DAL), Eaves (DAL), Klinkhammer (EDM)
  • Controversial contracts (2): Bickell, Hartnell
  • Otherwise not listed (9): Skille (CBJ), Helm (DET), Z Smith (OTT), Hanzal (ARI), Abdelkader (DET), Cooke (MIN), Boyle (FLA), Nystrom (NSH), Brouwer (WSH)

Last post. Also need a title.

The difference is Hanzal is signed for (IIRC) 2 more seasons, and is a big sound defensively center. While Boedker is a RFA this summer, he's also a UFA after his next deal. So 25 or not, if he's not willing to sign a long term deal this summer (and after hearing of a "rebuild" he may not be), they have to move him, and will get more value by doing so now, then as a pending FA next summer.

The last thread only got to 997, I'm very disappointed in that. This one will have to get to 1003 to even it out.

Not to nitpick, but in drpeppers post in the OP, Arcobello is in the otherwise not listed section and should be moved to Penguins players.

I don't actually ever edit the players listed in the table. I'm guaranteed to screw that up... so I leave it for others.

I actually think bringing in Michalek finishes off our D groups very well. You'd play him on the 2nd pair with Ehrhoff, and that gives each pair a defensive guy and a puck mover. Though I really don't think we need his PKing ability though, but it certainly can't hurt. If he's cheap, I don't see a reason to say no to bringing him in. Another D is really our only hole left, and that's assuming Harrington or Dumoulin can't handle the #6 role.

I cringe every single time I see Scudz's cap hit and term, damn you Shero!

Just imagine what we could be if he wasn't here past last year with our current group of forwards minus adams and sill.

Perron-Crosby-Hornqvist
Comeau-Malkin-Bennett
Kunitz-Sutter-Downie
Spaling-Goc-Arcobello
Sill-Adams

Martin-Letang
Duprey-Ehrhoff
Harry-Bortz
Dumo-DP

Just play which ever of the boys steps up and we'd have an extra 3 million+ in cap space for a stud LW for Gino and Comeau can take Archies spot with while he sits in the box. That sets us up with skill to move up and down the roster as injuries happen and lets the boys play and develop in the NHL.

You mean another D who can comfortably play the right side, play 18-20 minutes a night and is a RHS?

I don't know about the 18-20 minute part, but yes. We either need a puck mover to bump Despres up or a RHS to play with Ehrhoff.

I figured you'd like that one :P

Back in 92 I went to a Pens vs Rangers Playoff game, the one right after Graves took out Lemieux. I was a bit of character back then and I was practically insane the entire game. Most people in my section enjoyed my antics, it was a much different crowd back then (note I hope they did at least, I was young, crazy and drunk but always with a sense of humor with irony)

Anyway, of course I was wearing my Tocchet Jersey. End of the game, this stunning blonde who I was making small talk with the entire game taps me on my back and asks me "you seem like you are in love with Tocchet, have you ever met him?" After a back and forth, she decides to write down a number and hands it over. Her number you ask?? Nope, Rick Tocchet's home number! Turns out she had dated Paul Coffey a bit and Rick was a good friend.

From that night forward, I would call Rick's number immediately after every Playoff win with a bunch of drunk guys and we would chant LETS GO PENS!!! Kept it quick and never called any other time, only after every playoff win on their way to the cup. Rick must not have minded since he never changed his number.

What did Rick's message say? "Yea.. this is Rick, leave a message" in that deep sultry voice of his..

After watching tonight's game, I'm not so sure a defenseman isn't a bigger need than a winger. Harrington hasn't been good in the NHL so far (though it doesn't show much, a -9 in 7 games is terrible). Despres doesn't look like he can handle a top-4 role yet. Scuderi and Bortuzzo suck. Losing Maatta is going to crush us this year I feel like.

Still not interested in paying the price it would cost to get someone better.

There's still time to evaluate the young D-Men we have and see if they can handle it. I agree they may need to add a vet if it doesn't get any better though.

Honestly, it doesn't matter. Renting a defenseman or maybe a winger isn't the solution. Watching tonight, maybe the bigger problem is that so many, including in the organization, see guys like Kunitz and Martin as indispensable playoff pieces rather than as symbols of the complacency that rears its ugly head every time we're in a game like this.

The Pens are going to stand pat, maybe make a small addition if they can, but it will be a mistake that will rear its ugly head when it counts most. You can't coach fire.
