How has Edmonton not fired Eakins yet? Seems he hasn't made a good decision since getting there.

On another note, the more games they lose in a row, the more likely they are to make a panic move

Major changes are coming to the Coyotes.

Coyotes GM Don Maloney went into the dressing room Saturday and tore a strip off his players. Suggested core could be broken up. Changes could be coming. Said that anyone with limited no-trade clause would have his agent contacted to get a list of teams to whom Coyotes could trade them to. Nothing imminent, but many GMs looking at team.

Please trade for Boedker.

Coyotes, Oilers, Sabres and E. Kane wants out of WGP.... geez, sure sounds like a lot of teams are selling right now. Good old' JR needs to get off the barcalounger and make a deal sooner rather than later. Because I guarantee if we slip out of the top spot in the Metro, we aren't getting it back. Islanders and too good right now and have too much depth to slip later in the season.

Poor Edmonton

Also it's Edmonton, ever been there? If Winnipeg is the armpit of Canada (it seriously is), then Edmonton is the taint.

While Edmonton certainly isn't my favorite place (with an NHL team) in Canada (Vancouver would probably be tops)... it's not that bad. But I can definitely see why it gets a bad rap, and why NHL players who have the option to play elsewhere would choose to do so. Flat and unscenic, and very much an industrial town (vs say Calgary which has a lot of green - grass, trees, etc). When going between the two, it's light and day difference. The winters can be brutal.

Man… so they tank for years to get the best players 3 years in a row. Then they figure they'll be rebuilt with a top six of number one drafts.

I wonder if their "5 year tank to rebuild" was their best option lol.

If you told me ANY team could have the top picks year after year, yet they'd still be the worst team in the league, I'd call you crazy.

Wonder what their next rebuild will be structured like...

They didn't really have a lot of options. They had a poor prospect pool and a crappy NHL team.

The situations are completely different. The Pens never actually had a 1st overall, they traded for the Fleury pick and they won the draft lottery for the Crosby pick. The Pens were put in that situation because they were horribly bankrupt from the bad business decisions by Baldwin. Because of his poor money spending in the late 90s, they had to trade away all of their good players simply because they couldn't afford them. We went go from making the ECF in 2000-2001 with Jagr, Kovalev, Lemieux, Straka and Lang to being the 2nd worst team in 03-04 with none of the above (Lemieux missed 72 games and the rest were gone). We couldn't afford to keep any of those players. The Oilers management just suck, that's basically what it comes down to.

How have you never heard of the Oilers money issues regarding retaining talent in the 90s/00s? Pre cap they had a hell of a problem trying to keep anyone who had any success there. Weight, Guerin, Cujo, etc. There were MANY examples of very good players being traded out of town for cheaper guys with upside and prospects/picks. Edmonton also compounded it by having a very poor scouting/development program. They made tons of early/mid picks in the early 00s that missed completely.

5 years into their rebuild they still do not have a great system. They certainly have some very nice pieces... but it's still very much a work in progress. Honestly, I feel sorry for them, as their fans deserve so much better.

But I'm not ever going to say that they do (or don't) deserve a top pick. Especially as a Pens fan. Talk about Pot meeting Kettle.

They don't deserve it bc they don't do anything to better their franchise with these players.

They only care about the money.
If they cared about winning, that would NEVER happen with the hands they've been dealt, and that's why they don't deserve a first overall until they prove that they want to win.

Back that up. There's not one thing anyone can point to and say... "see they don't care about winning". Edmonton has never shied away from spending money.

Way to easy to toss out bombs like this with absolutely nothing to back it up.

Their record backs it up, man.

There isn't one other team in the league that's been as atrocious as they have for the past decade… and to top it off and make matters worse, they've had top picks throughout that tenure. Pittsburgh, Washington, Chicago, Islanders… hell, every team that's had a 1st overall in the past decade has made the playoffs EXCEPT the Oilers, and over that time, they've had the most first overall.

I'll take 2 of Boedker,Perron, Yak and Foligno

Three would be better. Posted this in tonight's GDT:

Games like this remind me of just how critical it is for one of Sid/Geno to be on. Unlike any other top team in hockey, we live and die based on that.

A game like this also reminds me of how hard that has to be for Sid/Geno when the talent advantage between them and their peers is neutralized by the talent deficiency between their linemates and their peers' linemates.

Times to be hard on them. Times not to be hard. This is the latter IMO, not because either is playing well, but because a blowout like this-- not just on the ice but on the scoreboard-- reminds of just how large a competitive disadvantage they've been placed.
