Gaborik signed a 7 year deal with LA worth like $5 million. Holy crap, that's a risky move for a player of that age and injury history.

Giving him that term was probably the only way he'd agree to such a low cap number. Still incredibly risky though. Gaborik tends to wear out his welcome everywhere he goes.

I couldn't see the initial reports of 3 years being true. This sounds way more realistic. Definitely a big risk at 7 years but at 5 mil, after 4 or 5 years, he is still tradable.

Yeah it's a risk, but LA likely looks at their roster today and thinks "we are serious contenders for the next 5 years". Signing Gabby to that cap hit allows them to keep the team together. In 5 years, you make the decision on who to move on from. Risky move for sure, but it seems like a risk worth taking.

Right, they could win the cup 2 more times in the next 5 or so years and who cares what happens in years 6-7. When there is a window to win, you have to go for it

Additionally, a 4.9m cap hit in years 4-7 will be minor when the cap is between 80-100m.

You gotta go balls to the wall when you are a contender.

The pens never really did that except for deadline trades. I hope jr goes balls to the wall this summer and doesn't wait until the deadline.

It's probably structured like this in actual salary though so they can just trade him at the end to a cap floor team:

That isn't allowed in the CBA. The low year can only be 50% of the max year. The breakdown could be:

7m

5m

3.5m

JR will definitely have the balls, he is here for 2 years and will do everything to win in that span. Only problem is how much will it hurt the franchise in the long run. I guess we will find out soon enough

I thought it was a good move by the Kings. Risky, yeah, but you have to take risks for huge rewards 4.875m is easy to work with. And there's no NTC/NMC.

All their core pieces are really young. Nothing at all wrong with giving out one of those contracts to a guy who can fly and score goals.

Pens have spent to the cap every single year and always been highly active in free agency.

Not sure what else they should have done to be more "balls to the wall."

I don't understand why the NHL uses the average salary for the cap hit. A player's actual salary should just count towards the cap for that year.

Dupuis is the better player and has chemistry and leadership value with this roster.

He's older, less creative and his leadership did dick all for us in the playoffs.

Plugs like him are expendable.

Leadership... I dunno. Kind of wishy-washy considering we don't really know.

Chemistry... yeah... Dupuis has shown that. In his short time here, so did Stemp.

I don't agree at all that Dupuis is the better player. He is significantly older, has played many more games, is coming off a serious injury and their career numbers are almost the same. I like Dupuis as a role player but I'd take Stemp over him, were it somehow possible.

This. It could save us 1M or so too.
First off PD has a NTC, secondly what can you get for him after such an injury and considering his age and salary? I don't see that netting us much via a trade.
