Stolen from the Panthers' forum, post your ideal 2014-15 Sens lines IF:

* You're allowed one realistic free agent signing
* You have to let at least two Sens go
* You mostly have to build from within

^ Just to keep it realistic with Melnyk as owner

Didn't change much because I don't think we have the money to add a top 6 fwrd in free agency which is really what we need. MM9 is gone and zibby finally proves himself a top 6 after learning from starting the year in the AHL that he actually needs to work during the summer and improve or find himself on the outside looking in. Would love to see Lazar make the jump next year but think he would be better left in the WHL to develop. Pageau finally makes the jump next year.

Assuming Hemsky isn't our UFA signing (since he's technically our property at the moment):

MacArthur - Turris - Ryan
Michalek - Spezza - Hemsky
Hoffman - Zibanejad - Stone
Greening - Smith - Condra
Neil

Methot - Karlsson
Ceci - Niskanen
Cowen - Phillips
Gryba

* Michalek gets re-signed because OP said we can only sign one UFA, and I'm using my one UFA on the blueline... if he can't find his old form, Hoffman gets promoted to the top-6, Greening stays on the 4th line, Pageau gets a trial on the 3rd line.
* Wiercioch gets traded for futures, or with another defenceman (Gryba?) for an upgrade on the blueline.
* Kassian is not re-signed because lolKassian
* I'd suggest Greening be one of the two that is let go, but we know that's not happening.
* Lazar gets his 9 games, spends the year developing in the minors, gets a full time job in Ottawa in 2015/16.

Very tough.

Prince/Puempel/Lazar could all make it.

Claesson/Boro as well.

In any case, abiding by OP's guidelines, I agree with BonkTastic.

Btw, I unno how we gonna send Pageau down next year. I think he's already deserved another call-up but he's gonna be beautiful with another off-season training program under his belt.

I feel like this about a lot of the guys in our system.

IMO, we're going to have to make a "Quantity-for-quality" trade soon, even if we end up giving away a little more than we get, just so that we don't start losing prospects for nothing.

We don't have room for everyone coming up. There are just not enough roster spots, IMO.

Always really hard to say. I you were to ask me for the current season, I thought Pageau would be here the whole year, that Da Costa wouldn't have another shot and that Borocop would be on the team but again you never know what could happen

Hoffman- Spezza - Hemsky
MaCarthur - Turris - Ryan
Zibanejad - Pageau - Stone
Greening - Smith - Condra

Karlsson - Methot
Cowen - ???
Phillips - Ceci

My big concern is on defense, We dont have a spot for All the guys and that really bothers me. We have 1 spot for 4 defensemen. Gryba, Wiercoch, Borowiecki and Claesson ... Those guys are all ready to make the jump permanently. So who do we play?? I think Gryba, Wiercoch have showed us they belong here and Borowiecki did well at his stint this year.. As for Claesson he his an absolute beauty in Bingo.
I have a Feeling some of them will be traded..

As for the forwards, I believe Michalek doesnt resign and I think Hoffman will take his role in the top 6. I put Hemsky there but it all depends on the end of the season and how much he wants. Finally I believe Stone an Pageau could be on the team but again I'm not sure what happens with Da Costa... Where does he fit in there? Kinda hard to say .. we have too many prospects

Here's what I'd do if Melnyk's budget didn't exist:
Keep Michalek on the cheap, keep Hemsky, sign Markov, waive Gryba/Borowiecki and Greening, trade Cowen + futures (2016 first?) for O'Reilly

O'Reilly (6.0) - Spezza (7.0) - Hemsky (4.0)
MacArthur (3.25) - Turris (3.5) - Ryan (5.1)
Hoffman (1.0) - Zibanejad (~1.5) - Michalek (2.5-3.0)
Condra (1.25) - Smith (1.9) - Neil (1.9)

Methot (3.0) - Karlsson (6.5)
Markov (5.5) - Ceci (~1.5)
Phillips (2.5) - Wiercioch (2.0) (Not keen playing Wier on his off-side, but the stupid Phillips signing forces it)
Gryba/Borowiecki (0.6)

Anderson (3.2)
Lehner (1.5)

Total Cap Hit: $65.6M
Estimated Salary Cap: $68M

Probably too unrealistic for this exercise, but I think that team is a hell of a lot better than the current incarnation.

If we're talking about UFA defenceman who are realistic targets for us yet will still potentially make an impact, I'd say Joni Pitkanen* is our best bet.

I know I put Niskanen in as my UFA defenceman because he's young and good and could be a long-term piece.... but he's having a career season, the kind that I think will be hard for him to duplicate on another team, and as such I think he'll be overpaid as a UFA. I like the player, but I'm not crazy about the contract someone will sign him to... he'll get overpaid by at least $2mil/year for the production you'll get out of him going forward.

Pitkanen seems like he's right in our wheel-house: he might sign on a discount because he spent the entire year on the shelf with injury, he's not so old (he's only 30) that his play is going to start rapidly declining, plays a great transition game, is a fantastic skater, great offensive instincts and would be an amazing compliment to Karlsson on the powerplay. He's not a physical guy, but we have a ton of those right now (Methot, Cowen, Gryba, "Phillips Sometimes")

If we could get him on a 2 year, $6-to-7 mil deal... that would give our blueline the real kick in the pants it needs. Ideally we need a shutdown guy, but there aren't any shutdown defencemen on the UFA market this summer that don't come with some pretty glaring warts.

* assuming Pitkanen doesn't show lingering effects from his heel injury - the last thing we need here is a Ryan Whitney type of guy, whose career is cut short due to injury.

I don't think the team participates in free agency at all. I see trades coming. The cupboards are overstocked. We don't have roster spots for them. I also think BM looks for players already in the NHL in return.

Here's my armchair version, breaking the rules in the OP. Trades are pretty rough, consider them starting points as I suck at them.

Michalek, Hemsky, Kassian are gone.

Weircioch & Prince for Stafford (BUF)
Cowen & Puempel for Spaling & Ekholm (NAS)
Pageau and/or Stone might be part of one of these deals too.

I gave all the RFA players decent raises.

Cowen & Puempel for Spaling & Ekholm (NAS)

Why are we giving up two former first round picks for a grinder and yet another bottom pairing defenseman? I know Cowen and Puempel haven't retained their draft day value but that is an awful trade.

Nick Spaling ($2.200m) / Jason Spezza ($7.000m) / Drew Stafford ($4.000m)

That is one of – if not the – worst first lines in the league.

*Re-sign Michalek and Hemsky
*Rather than sign an FA, opted to trade for Stewart (I don't know if he's played any LW, so maybe I need to re-evaluate). Was trying to be more realistic and I think we deal some prospects like Prince for him rather than signing an expensive FA.
*Greening and Condra are the two Sens I have leaving
*Would love to use Weircioch+ to try and upgrade the D, but trying to stay as close to the OP's set parameters as possible
*That 4th line LW is not set in Stone (see what I did there?), have some internal competition for it.

If we're talking about UFA defenceman who are realistic targets for us yet will still potentially make an impact, I'd say Joni Pitkanen* is our best bet.

I agree with this and thought about just before I saw your post. He could eat a lot of minutes and push everybody down a spot as the #2. He's 5 years younger than Markov, could come at an injury discount and many other choices are pretty underwhelming. Thought of Quincey for a second, but his career has been way too inconsistent.

I may have been too budget conscious...
Hoffman - Spezza - Hemsky
MacArthur - Turris - Ryan
Pageau - Zibanejad - Condra
Grant - Smith - Neil
Zibby gets PP time over Hoffman. TOI/GP doesn't reflect the lineup at all.

Methot - Karlsson
Pitknanen - Cowen
Phillips - Ceci
Boro - Gryba
Let Kassian walk and give Boro/Gryba the odd 4th line game.

Attempt to trade Wiercioch and Greening for a D-man at Pitkanen's level (in lieu of) or for picks that could help us later as liquid cash in a deal.
