I don't doubt that if Yandle were right handed that he'd be in over Shattenkirk, but that was part of the problem - he isn't. Everyone that he was competing with was solid both ways. I honestly see this a bit like when Mike Green got left off of Team Canada in 2010.

I think you're right. Yandle would be on the team right now if he were right handed.

I'm not a fan of the Shattenkirk pick though. I think you find a way to work around the handedness issue for that significant of a talent gap.

I am trying to comprehend how Yandle got left off, is he injured? Has anyone come up with any reason why? That seems to me the most glaring omission (Pretty much every Hockey media guy had Yandle on there).

Congrats to Washington's TJ Oshie, I think he is the first person from Washington to ever be on Team USA olympic hockey.

Oshie was born in Washington, but he spent most of his life in Minnesota, going to Warroad high school and playing for UND.

The real question is why the media relations department at USA Hockey allowed these types of comments to be released to the public.

It's weird that they wanted this kind of publicity, but I'm glad they did!

Seriously though, Kevin Allen I understand completely. One of the truly best guys covering USA Hockey in this country.

Scott Burnside on the other hand..... well I have this feeling like they really really wanted somebody, anybody from ESPN.

 If the USA loses, it won't be because Ryan wasn't on the team.

Nope. It will be because goaltending lets them down, or the blue line doesn't perform up to expectations. Or just a coach who doesn't adapt well. That's a possibility too. But the bottom line is it will be because the team just isn't good enough, not because of one player.

I would've taken Dubinsky and Ryan ahead of Stepan and Callahan.

--Dubinsky would be the 5th center and between him and Oshie one of them can slot in next to Backes, the other being the scratch.
--Ryan can be the #13. They can plug him into any line they want if they need the goals. An offensive specialist if you will. You don't need to give him a regular shift (unless he earns it, which is also a real possibility)

This isn't as much a shot at Callahan as a realization that if you want to have that option of Bobby Ryan available, you need to add that 5th center, and Dubinsky is as good as you're going to get to a center version of Callahan (who can also play wing).

But it is what it is. The more I think about this team, the less sure I feel about anything. Does it have enough speed? Enough offense? Enough size? The reality is the team is extremely well balanced--not truly elite in any one area (other than goaltending), but good across the board. I feel like this is a team that can adapt and play different styles, which could turn out to be really important based on the opposition.

How does Burke say he shoulda drafted Jack Johnson but then doesn't vouch for him for a roster spot? LOL

Jack Johnson basically played himself off the team if you go by the article. I think many wanted him but his play just wasn't there these last few week.He has to be on the reserve list if there are any injuries, same as Yandle.

I'm going to be honest, I'm currently floored that the starting 6 defenders for team USA over the summer were Suter, McDonagh, Martin, Johnson, Orpik and Faulk. Especially that Yandle and EJ were essentially afterthoughts.

Erik has had a couple pretty mediocre years before this one. That doesn't surprise me at all.

Exactly. Too much is being made of Ryans omission almost to the point of saying he's going to be a major difference maker. He would've been a nice part of the team, but as you pointed out, losing this tourney won't come down to him.

Considering the names in the hat at the time? Despite what people may think, EJ was still playing great hockey for us even with a statistically poor lockout year.

Maybe I'm a bit jaded by his level of performance this year (which I still maintain is as good as he was for us in 11-12, just more appreciated due to our record), but it still doesn't excuse Yandle being omitted from discussion, Orpik's lock on the team and Faulk squarely ahead of several defenders which he should have been roughly neck and neck with.

Burke defended JJ up and down that article from what I recall reading.

Not really, he never seemed impressed by his play recently but he knows he's good on International ice and when he's got USA across his chest.....hence why he kept saying "12 days, I know he won't let us down for 12 days".

If they struggle offensively, then yeah, people will mention it... a lot. I realize there are no guarantees Bobby would do well, but he's a top 5 forward in terms of pure offense for US.

Not sure why people are saying USA will struggle to score.

This year:
Kane: 23 goals
Kessel: 20 goals
Pacioretty: 17 goals
Backes: 16 goals
Pavelski: 16 goals
Wheeler: 15 goals
JVR: 15 goals
Kesler: 15 goals
Statsny: 11 goals

Sure we don't have a Sidney Crosby...but we have a balanced attack. And we have some good grinders who are great team players who will have a big effect on the teams success who will play on the 4th line.

How anyone can still argue for Okposo with Ryan sitting at home is beyond me

RIGHT NOW, the way KO is playing the only player I would take over him is Kane. And that is even close. THIS SEASON, KO has been hitting, digging in the corners, forechecking, scoring, playing defense. He now has as many points as Ovi... Ovi. He also hasent been streaky... he currently has an 8 game point streak (longest in the NHL). I cant believe Ryan was left off either, and he should be on there. But right now KO is an unbelievably complete hockey player.
