What are your thoughts on the season? High points? Low points? How would you grade people?

Players Grades

I would like people to rank the players.
Use a scale of 1 to 5 and rank based on your expectations of the player.

1 - Far below expectations
2 - Below expectations
3 - As expected
4 - Above Expectations
5 - Far above expectations

For example if you thought Butler was the worst player in the world heading into the season and he was the 2nd worst player in the world, he would get a 4.

if you have the time say what you expected of the player and why you feel they exceeded, met or failed to meet your expectations.

Mine will come tomorrow afternoon, I need to sleep :(

The high point for me has to have been this last two months as we have gotten to see alot of our prospects not just play but do very well. The low point was definitely that stretch in the middle of the season where most of our good defenders were injured and in turn we tanked hard.

My rankings based on above criteria.

1
TJ Galiardi, Shane O Brien

2
Kevin Westgarth, Sven Baertschi, Matt Stajan, David Jones

3
Mike Cammalleri, Chris Butler, Brian McGratten, Dennis Wideman, Ladislav Smid, Curtis Glencross, Ben Hanowski, Jiri Hudler

4
Lance Bouma, Paul Byron, Kris Russell, Mikeal Backlund, Sean Monahan, Tyler Wotherspoon, Markus Granlund, Joe Colborne (after being moved to the wing), Karri Ramo

5
Mark Giordano, TJ Brodie

Hard to rank guys who haven't played a lot but here are some quick thoughts.

Joni Ortio - Looked decent in his first couple NHL experiences but obviously needs more time.
Kenny Agostino - Average 3rd line winger
Corbon Knight - Looked good enough to play regularly
Johnny Gaudreau - Some nice moves, good passing/play making ability
Mark Cundari - To me he seems capable of playing as a bottom pairing guy, although perhaps not with the Flames.

End of season clean-out today and lots of fresh quotes surfaced over the last couple of hours. Guys seem to really enjoy playing here and had a lot of fun this season. Definitely love the atmosphere we have created with all the guys working for each other.

Glencross and Backlund are planning to be in the playoffs next year. :naughty:

Definitely shy on top end talent for now but one of the hardest working teams in the league no doubt

Kenny Agostino: 3 (Hoping his game can get to a higher level at AHL next year)
Bill Arnold: 3 (A bit better in his first game than I thought he was going to be)
Mikael Backlund: 4 (Is rounding out his game nicely and becoming a leader as well)
Sven Baertschi: 2 (Hoping he gets it turned around with a nice AHL playoff run)
Chad Billins: 2 (Expected more from what I heard about him in Abbotsford)
Lance Bouma: 4 (Great heart and courage could be excellent 3rd liner next year)
Christopher Breen: 2 (Was hoping for a bit more)
TJ Brodie: 5 (Is a legitimate #2 and has the ceiling of a #1 on any team if he keeps developing)
Chris Butler: 3 (Was terrible at start of year but has progressed to average #4 defenseman)
Paul Byron: 4 (Great speed excellent penalty killer plays bigger than his size)
Mike Cammalleri: 4 (Was really impressed with his last half of the season)
Joe Colborne: 4 (Didn't expect much but the move to wing has been huge for him)
Mark Cundari: 1 (Really thought he was going to be a good one after last seasons audition but think he may just be AHLfull time or NHL fringe player)
TJ Galiardi: 1 (Was expecting way more)
Johnny Gaudreau: 4 (Glad he scored in his debut offensively great -defensively lost but I think he will learn defensive game very quickly as he seems a step ahead already)
Mark Giordano: 5 (Way better than I expected one of the best defensemen in the NHL this year and the pairing with Brodie is one of the best pairings in the NHL)
Curtis Glencross: 2 (Injuries derailed him but if he can buy in like all the other veterans and work that hard he will have an excellent bounceback year)
Markus Granlund: 4 (Had high expectations but was really impressed in his short stint easily 3rd line center with ceiling of a #2 in the future)
Ben Hanowski: 2 (Was expecting more on his time on the 4th line)
Jiri Hudler: 4 (Way better than I expected especially early on in the season)
Tim Jackman: 1 (Got traded and that is probably best for his future)
Blair Jones: 3 (Still like his game as a #4 center)
David Jones: 2 (At times looked good powering to the front of the net and at other times looked invisible but that could have been playing hurt, will see next year what he can bring)
Corban Knight: 2 (Was much weaker than Granlund all around and in faceoffs and I expected more even though he was 4th lining it. Because of that thought his faceoff numbers would have been higher)
Brian McGrattan: 4 (Really loved the energy and toughness and leadership he brought this year. Has improved his skating speed from past seasons which was quite noticeable that last 30 games or so)
Sean Monahan: 4 (Thought he'd be lucky to score 10 this year and was amazed at how deadly he is in close. Is learning very quickly which bodes well for his future)
Shane O'Brien: 2 (I think he can bring leadership to the AHL squad and has value their)
Max Reinhart: 2 ( Was hoping for a breakout NHL campaign but he has had a nice AHL season. My expectations might have been too high for him)
Kris Russell: 4 (Was really good before being paired with Butler and I expect more from him next year with a better defensive partner)
Ladislav Smid: 3 (Was everything advertised and a bit more)
Derek Smith: 2 (He is better than he showed this year and hopefully can regain some confidence in the AHL)
Matt Stajan: 3 (Is turning into an excellent leader and always works hard which is a great example to the kids)
Lee Stempniak: 2 (Was great before the Ferrence beatdown then his game sort of disappeared. Wishing him well with the Penguins)
Ben Street: 3 (Hartley liked him a lot at the start could be effective 4th liner)
Bryce Van Brabant: 3 (Thought he was as advertised tough hitter)
Kevin Westgarth: 3 (He progressed well this year and it's nice to have 2 tougher players reminds me of the old North Stars line with McRae and Churla)
Dennis Wideman: 2 (Was better early on in preseason and I think my expectations were again too high)
Tyler Wotherspoon: 4 (Way better than I thought. His passes out of the zone have improved exponentially and he makes far better decisions than when I watched him in junior. Going to be a really good one if he keeps developing like this)

Burke said he'd like to be in the playoffs, he said that he usually sends kids back to junior but Monahan is a special player, said the final draft scouting will be done by 2nd week of May then it's about GM search but that's most likely to be after draft. He has already started talking to teams.

Despite the standings, you guys have a very bright future ahead I think. In what is perhaps the official year 1 of a rebuild/retool the Flames already look better than teams who have been rebuilding for much longer. IMO the Flames are by far one of the most exciting teams to watch which makes me think that going forward promises much more. Best of luck for the coming seasons :)
