Re: McCabe's upcoming decision per the Wisconsin State Journal:

McCabe has spoken of his desire to be the UW captain next season — he was an assistant this year — but the All-Big Ten first-team choice declined to get into specifics about his plans for next season. He said even his parents are waiting to find out.

“All I’ve told them this whole time is we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,†said McCabe, who would be a prime Hobey candidate if he returns after showing 8-17-25 this season.

The loss to North Dakota pained McCabe deeply. Long after most of his teammates had showered and filed out to be with family members, he was still in battle garb, a tortured look on his face.

Both Kerdiles and McCabe said their thoughts of returning were enhanced by how the seniors went about their business.

“It will be interesting to see what their perspectives are after watching this year,†Eaves said of his two potential returnees.

It’s not iron-clad evidence, but Rumpel said he just signed a campus lease for 2014-15. He said McCabe also signed the lease.

The broadcast team on ESPNU just said that theres been some speculation that Hudson Fasching might be going pro after this season. Mentioned that there was some speculation and fears from people in Minnesota that he might turn pro after the year?

Would be a pretty foolish decision by both him and the Sabres' organization if he did. I expect this to be a non issue since Buffalo probably won't even approach him about turning pro and will want him back in Minnesota for another year or two.

Yes. Once an NCAA player signs a pro contract they are no longer eligible for NCAA. I guess he could go to the CHL if a team still held his rights.

I heard that, too. It's a ridiculous notion really. Minnesota is just like the team Murray wants to build: heavy wingers, hard forecheck, active D. He's raw and is in a very good place to develop. They're also loaded with good underclassmen, so there's something to build.

That's what I was thinking. That family considerations may be behind a decision like this.

That said, he's a good skater but really could improve it a ton. His foot work could be the difference between him being just a heavy body, or being an elite power forward. Maybe the Sabres feel like they can teach him and develop him better in Rochester than Lucia can in Minnesota?

That's also before he left home for an entire year for Ann Arbor, which would be quite costly. Also, the article was written years ago, things certainly could've changed since then?

I'm sure USA Hockey looks after the kids financially while they are away from their parents. It's not like these kids have had part-time jobs to make some cash on the side, their whole lives have been nothing but hockey.

That's what I was thinking. That family considerations may be behind a decision like this.

I would agree; though being in the healthcare industry, I'm well aware of the payment options that families can entertain, for anything from miniscule procedures to mammoth perpetual treatments... I would think the family is being worked with in terms of not sucking them dry of every penny immediately.

Though I'm sure that, somewhere along the lines, they've had to bypass the best possible treatment option or the best possible doctor in order to save some money somewhere...network issues at the very least... so maybe a large professional deal allows them to see that specialist that isn't in their network and costs them more OOP.... who knows?

Bottom line, though, is that he must return for his sophomore season IMO. At the very least, one more year of NCAA hockey - especially on that team, which is so young, so deep, and plays a game that's so, so, so very conducive to maximizing what he does best - will do him worlds of good.

If he turns pro, wouldn't surprise me if the Pegula family did something extra to help his family out. Something they are prohibited from doing while he's with the Gophers.

Hudson Fasching (2013, fourth round) recorded three shots on goal Sunday as Minnesota advanced to the 2014 NCAA Tournament Frozen Four with a 4-0 shutout of St. Cloud State. On Saturday, Fasching scored from the edge of the crease as the Gophers opened the tourney with a 7-3 victory over Robert Morris. Fasching's marker, which snapped a personal six-game goal drought, gives the freshman winger 29 points (13+16) in 38 games heading into Minnesota’s national semifinal tilt with North Dakota on Thursday, Apr. 10 (8:30 pm ET, ESPN2).

On Friday, Jake McCabe (2012, second round) logged a minus-four rating as Wisconsin was bounced from the NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional with a 5-2 loss to North Dakota. A competent two-way defender, McCabe completes the campaign with career bests of eight goals and 25 points in 36 games for the Badgers.

Wisconsin winger Brad Navin (2011, seventh round) received limited work in the Badgers’ loss to North Dakota. The third-year man amassed nine points (4+5) this season while functioning in mostly a checking line role.

Anthony Florentino (2013, fifth round) scored his fifth goal of the season Friday as Providence advanced to the NCAA Tournament East Regional Final with a 4-0 victory over Quinnipiac. Florentino’s marker came off a wrist shot from the left point that sailed through a maze of bodies to put the Friars up 2-0 in the game's 26th minute. Florentino, who saw his freshman season come to an end Saturday in a 3-1 loss to Union, finishes the year with five goals and 11 points, while leading all Friars rearguards with a plus-12 rating.

I read the story in last years NHL draft preview and said that I'd love to draft the kids, because he's working hard for all the right reasons. After trading for him and the season that he has had, sign him up, give him the big signing bonus and let him play next year in the CHL. The he can help is parents out fanatically. If he ever becomes a star, then he'll become a name everyone will know because of this incredible yet tragic backstory! Good luck Hudson, hope your dream come true because you'll share those with your family.

The real losers in all this is the team’s championship-starved fan base. Through 43 years, the Wolves have but a pair of regular season division banners, not a single conference banner, and two trips to the league final. By any measuring stick, the track record is awful, worst in the league.

Worse yet, it’s back to rebuild mode next season with a slew of veterans gone and several fewer draft picks to restock the cupboard, almost guaranteeing a sell-off at some point next season to recoup at least some of the picks spent Jan. 9.

This is under the assumption that several players will not return as overagers, especially Pancel and Campagna. If they return, and Timpano and Capobianco shine, it can still be a competitive team and may not sell off.

I'd not think the top end players would be back though as overagers, there were obviously players who took great issue with management on the team, and it was apparent in their production down the stretch.

Nothing wrong with being the leader though, that go to guy. I'd expect him to captain the Wolves next year.
