I was the last post in the other thread so I'll copy and paste my thoughts here if that's ok.

I tried just messing around on capgeek but I realized that we just have too many players. Guys need to be bought out and traded to make room for better players. These guys are locks and are under contract or certainly will be resigned:

This puts us at 14 forwards and 7 defense. Ideally, we let Cleary walk (I think he'll retire), along with Miller and White (and possibly Filp). Hopefully we buy out Sammy and Quincey, and trade Tootoo/Eaves at the deadline for a late pick. This drops us to 12 forwards and 6 defense. This allows us to either resign Filppula or (my preference) sign Weiss/Roy/Ribiero/Richards to center the 2nd line. It will also let us bring in a sniper (Horton/Clarkson/Boyes/Ryder/Anybody bought out). This also allows us to sign another E-like player who plays big and can PK, preferably somebody right handed. Ideally, our lines would look something like this:

That lineup honestly looks very dangerous to me. Brunner's adjusted to the NA game now, and with an offseason of training, will be a force in terms of goal scoring. Datsyuk can sauce passes to him all day, and Franzen can just be there until he decides to show up for the few games he does every year. Also he's a decent net front presence.

Horton brings an awesome physical presence to that 2nd line, and Z and Gus have obvious chemistry that needs to be exploited. Awesome pairing with those two and then Horton can pop in the other goals/create space. Would be the big skilled winger we've needed for a while.

Third line is absolutely amazing. If Helm is able to play at full speed (which is wishful thinking I admit), that line will decimate any defense in the league. Tatar is skilled, fast, hardworking and can make some slick plays; Stalberg is a speed demon and works extremely hard on the forecheck (also has some sick skill), and then we have good ol' Helmer that can basically change the face of an entire game with his tenacity. If Helm is healthy by the start of next season (100%), I think we'll see huge goals scored from that line all year.

Fourth line is forechecking and some physicality. Sheahan, Bertuzzi and tootoo are all interchangeable.
Andersson is a great center and PKs well, Sheahan is a good 2way shutdown guy and abs we know is our only real physical presence. He's also come into his own these playoffs.

The defense isn't as exciting, but I feel like DeKeyser's scarily calm and collected game would mesh wonderfully with Kronwall, and let him open up offensively to light up his numbers again. Second pairing works on the same concept with Kindl, and then the last pairing is hinging on the hopes that Smith takes a big step forward to where he was last year (ironic but true).

Overall I'm excietd for next year

I like our goaltending and defense going into next year, I would like to add at least one of Clowe, Horton, Clarkson, Torres, Cooke, or Bickell.

Solid list of players up for a contract, important players. I'm hoping for Brunner around $2.5M, Kindl $2M, Smith $1.5-1.8M, Nyquist $1.2M-$1.5M and Andersson squeezed in under a million. I would give Kindl 4 years and push his UFA status a bit, and hope to get great value towards the end of the deal. Give Brunner and the other RFA's shorter deals to prove themselves.

Assuming those estimates, we'd be about two million under the cap. Lashoff can be buried in the minors for another season(waiver exempt) and would leave us with about three million in cap space.

From there I can see a lot of different scenarios(exercising buyouts, UFA signings etc.).

That would leave around $2 Million under the cap.

1) Use the two cap exempt compliance buyouts on Samuelsson and Coliacovo

2) Re-sign RFA's Anderson (1m), Nyquist (1.5m), Kindl (1.5m) and Smith (1.75m). Those figures seem reasonable.

3) Obtain a UFA power forward to play in top 6 (replacing/improving our not so power forward, Cleary). Clarkson would be great 1st option. Horton would also be ideal. 3rd option, go back to Jagr with tail firmly between legs and offer one year deal.

4) I believe Brunner and Filppula are likely to get overpaid in free agency (I'm thinking north of 3.5m). I would make a high risk/reward play on Weiss, Solid two way player coming off a down year, so not likely to earn a raise. If he returns to form, he could pay off. Still only 30 and played major junior in Michigan. If Brunner or Flip could be signed for 3m, than I'd pull the trigger and put either one in Weiss' spot.

5) Sign a veteran UFA D-man in Ferrence. Can still skate, smart player in both ends and rugged. Don't think i can stomach both Smith and Kindl in the lineup every game for another full season. Injuries are inevitable and defense depth is key.

Can we stop with Abdelkader experiment in our top 6? Yes, he did improve during the season, but he is not a top 6 forward.

I think they give Filppula another shot. He's 29, still in his prime and if he finds his form from last year, then we have a decent second line forward. But for the argument's sake, let's say Holland lets go of all UFAs except Brunner.

We're going to need some grit next season. Toronto, Boston, Ottawa, Montreal and to some extent Buffalo have a lot of grit. We'll have to sacrifice skill for grit.

I think our defense and goaltending is pretty much set. Gustavsson for one more season before Mrazek is backup in 2014/2015. I'd buyout Colaiacovo, even though he did ok in playoffs.

Now at forward we could have:

Buyout Samuelsson. If Helm hasn't recovered, promote Andersson to the third line, Emmerton to the fourth and callup Sheahan (I'd even put Sheahan ahead of Emmerton). This is a team put together with absolutely no moves (except re-signing our RFAs and Brunner). My only concern is our PK. We essentially lose Miller, Cleary and Filppula.

Unless they trade or waive certain players, I don't see them signing any new players. The FA crop isn't that great. Iginla isn't getting any younger and the first player under 30 who is worth looking at is Horton. Clowe, Ryder, MacArthur, Weiss and Clarkson are all worth looking at. I wonder if they could dump Emmerton somehow. Low round pick or something.

I think we will have to struggle one more year before a major roster shakeup will happen. Datsyuk, Bertuzzi, Eaves, Quincey, Ericsson and Gustavsson are all FA's. I'd re-sign Datsyuk if he wants to stay, DeKeyser obviously and Ericsson. That's about it. That gives four spots for new signings and/or promotions for prospects:

Jarnkrok, Ouellet, Sproul, Jurco, Frk, Pulkkinen, Callahan, Almquist and Ferraro to choose from essentially.

BUYOUTS

During the ordinary course buyout periods in June 2013 and June 2014, teams will be permitted two compliance buyouts. Compliance buyouts follow the same formula as ordinary-course buyouts — either 1/3 or 2/3 of actual salary depending on age — but do not count against the cap.

The NHL allowed teams to execute one of their two compliance buyout options prior to the 2012-13 season on players with cap hits of more than $3 million. Two teams exercised the option: the Montreal Canadiens on Scott Gomez and the New York Rangers on Wade Redden. The players received full pay and counted at their full cap hit for 2012-13, after which the compliance buyout payments kick in.

For one season following a compliance buyout, the player is prohibited from rejoining the team that bought him out.

So many players, that pretty much guarantees some movement, I think. As far as re-signing free agents, I see this:

Re-sign: Brunner, Kindl, Smith, Nyquist, Andersson, Miller.

Let walk: White, Filppula, Cleary (but if he comes back for dirt cheap and a one year deal I wouldn't complain. The dude IS a warrior when used properly).

I know Eaves and Miller are just extras, but they're always great when we need them to be, so I'd hate to let either one go if we don't have to.

You're probably right on Clarkson. I may have underpaid the figure he will end up with. But he is exactly what Detroit needs upfront. Horton long term probably scares most team in the league. With his concussion issues, I don't see teams lining up to hand him long term, big money deals.

Weiss had a terrible season last year and is coming off injury. I don't see him getting a raise. 3.0 to 3.5 is what he gets IMO. If he doesn't return to Florida, I could see Weiss bolting to a big market ater being burried in oblivion for his entire career... and maybe even taking a discount to do so.

As for Kindl, this is a personal opinion, But he doesn't have the footspeed to play in the NHL (backwards or forwards skating). It was painful for me to watch. If he has three steps on an incoming forechecker he is usually beaten to the puck. Guy has decent puck skills, but not enough to ignore his lead feet and low compete levels. Veteran for depth is needed. The defense was only average this year.

Of course your team is far more likely to be accurate. You endeavoured in no wild speculating and stuck to players within the org. How dare you?
