Toronto needs an influx of assets and it starts this deadline by restocking our prospect cupboard.
Last year was the perfect time for us to suck for just one more year to get a top end prospect to come along at the same time as Rielly but instead we got Gauthier who isn't going to significantly help us close the gap between playoff bubble team and contender. Adding in a high pick even outside of the top 3-4 like Lindholm (5th), Monahan (7th), Ristolainen (8th) would have set this team up very well for future seasons.
Chicago and LA fans were just as frustrated as we are but them sucking for just one more year and grabbing Kane, Schenn who ended up being integral parts of their championship teams as contributing player or asset to get that player (Richards) was the best thing that happened to their organizations.
For the Leafs:
Add in a top 10 pick this year
+
lots of extra picks from having sold off Franson, Kulemin, McClement, Raymond and our prospect pool could be well stocked for years.
+
Lots of cap space for the off-season
+
Reimer and Lupul who aren't in the long term plans to deal in the off-season (or even potentially at the deadline.
This team needs to take a 2-4 view towards being a contender just like LA did when they dealt off Cammi, Visnovsky, etc.
