Honestly, that train was never at the station. Thinking the Canes would be looking to trade Lindholm so shortly after the draft would have been akin to the Leafs looking to trade Rielly last year at this time simply because they had Gardiner, Franson and Liles on the team.

Both were #5 picks, both have very high upside and both are likely to be long term fixtures with their teams even though the teams may have depth at that spot when they were drafted.

Man that train was on station when they needed PMD and he wasn't performing this good. Something around Kadri+Gardiner for him would have worked out.

Next few years aren't likely to be much different.
Sadly, your absolutely right, there's no end to the misery we continue to endure. Fringe leaders Kessel/Phaneuf signed to long term high dollar deals, coach who's message is being ignored, team's compete effort non existent, new ownership, same result. weak defensive core, no #1 centre, questionable goaltending. It will be years before this group can contend.

Make no mistake about it Tim Leiweke will put his stamp on the team in a big way. Patience....

Maybe on HFBoards, but not where it mattered. He was injured most of the season until recently. Trust me, the Canes were not looking to trade him earlier and there was never any talk. The guys names that came up were always Gleason, Ruutu, Tlusty, etc...

He is going to take the maple out of Toronto maple leafs, so our initials correspond with his own.

In all seriousness maybe we need a better tree, like mahogany.

Makes no sense.

So your saying they don't care about winning or losing cause they are hero in town.

I would tend to think it would be way better around Toronto if the were winning and playing well the fans would be way more hero worshiping than when they are losing.

Do you think players really want to lose? They want to win a cup. Do you think these players really want to come to the rink everyday and answer the questions of why they suck.

No person in sports or in real life would want that.

Agreed. If anything, all the hype the team received during the playoffs last year should really make players want more success, not the other way around.

If I had a dollar for every time I was told the "new" guy will finally fix this I'd be booking a cruise! What is worrisome is Nonis comes out and says Caryle's not going anywhere, why say that? He should have said I demand a winning culture, and no coach or player is exempt from this goal. If we can't win with the existing group, then changes are coming.

Bottom line, when the team was winning at the beginning of the season we weren't as good as the record indicated. Likewise, team isn't as bad is it has shown recently. Wins against Detroit and Chicago over the past month show this team does have the ability. Nonis needs to stay patient here and let the players play their way out of this slump and maybe look to make some tweaks. This stretch shows us this team is far from being a contender for the cup, but still think we can contend for a playoff spot. I would look to make a mini re-tool. Unload some of the upcoming UFA's like Franson, Kulemin and Raymond to re-stock some draft picks we lost. Replace them with players from the Marlies. Find a way to change the personnel on the blueline between now and next fall....just not good enough.

Haven't heard any discussion in media of players-only meetings recently. If Im Nonis, I would walk into the dressing room and let players know that the coach is here to stay and the players need to step it up.

How many times will we retool? This retooled team has no heart and motivation to win the games. There are a very few people trying to win, but what does that do when the top line is playing like they are not even interested in match because they all got their pay day?

No chance Edmonton does the 1st trade and Ranger has a NTC.

No chance Pittsburgh does the 3rd trade and the Leafs don't need a Letang anyway.

Thats why they should fire Randy. This team has talent but we arent seeing all of it being used. New coach will hopefully motivate this group.

Toronto needs an influx of assets and it starts this deadline by restocking our prospect cupboard.

Last year was the perfect time for us to suck for just one more year to get a top end prospect to come along at the same time as Rielly but instead we got Gauthier who isn't going to significantly help us close the gap between playoff bubble team and contender. Adding in a high pick even outside of the top 3-4 like Lindholm (5th), Monahan (7th), Ristolainen (8th) would have set this team up very well for future seasons.

Chicago and LA fans were just as frustrated as we are but them sucking for just one more year and grabbing Kane, Schenn who ended up being integral parts of their championship teams as contributing player or asset to get that player (Richards) was the best thing that happened to their organizations.

For the Leafs:

Add in a top 10 pick this year

+

lots of extra picks from having sold off Franson, Kulemin, McClement, Raymond and our prospect pool could be well stocked for years.

+

Lots of cap space for the off-season

+

Reimer and Lupul who aren't in the long term plans to deal in the off-season (or even potentially at the deadline.

This team needs to take a 2-4 view towards being a contender just like LA did when they dealt off Cammi, Visnovsky, etc.

It looked like Carlyle had this same team motivated last year.

It was half of a season? And game seven didnt work out to well either. I know those trades were far fetched but something needs to change and im not all for a rebuild.

I would trade Bozak Kessel Clarkson Dion Franson And build around JVR Kadri Lupul Rielly Gardiner Bolland Kules. Expect some new big parts coming back for what's going out plus picks.

Basically get rid of the over priced under performing.

If you want a contending team you get the most 1st round picks in 2015 draft and rebuild this team. Top end talent and fairly deep pool. I don't get this idea of re-tooling. It's like you're making a joke of fans for giving them false hopes. Actually nothing does motivate this team at all.

Coaches changed, GM changed, some high paid players bought-out and freed to walk to FA. Everything has been done with this team but rebuilding.

I wanted Franson gone last off-season cause I never saw him as a player that could do anything more than be a PP specialist.

Lupul is 30.

If we're doing a multi year retool it makes no sense to keep him around.

Look at guys like Ryder, Havlat, Heatley, Gaborik, Iggy, Briere, Gionta, Burrows, Morrow and how their games offensive games tailed off dramatically in between their early to mid 30s.

Lupul is simply a fan favorite but he isn't a guy to build around moving forward.

I want Lupul on this team for a few reasons but in this case. I want him as a mentor. He is a 5.2m mentor to show kids how to get knocked down and get back up. That's it, I don't care if he is around for a cup run at age 36 in a Roberts (Penguins) role.

He is a positive influence. Not easy to find refined positive character like that.

That's why man.

Honestly it all comes down to effort, and the players aren't giving it. The best thing now is sell of dead weight, call up Marlies who are willing to put the effort in. Roll with

JVR - Bozak - Kessel
Lupul - Kadri - Leivo
D'amigo - Bolland/Holland - Clarkson
Ashton - McClement - Orr/McLaren

Phaneuf - Gunnarson
Gardiner - Gleason
Rielly - Percy/Fraser/Granberg

Bernier
Reimer/acquired backup

Rookies put in the effort, i don't care if we lose i just want to see some heart. Play the kids and what happens happens, as long as there is an attempt to win ill be satisfied.
