The first CIS Top 10 poll is out, despite the fact most teams have yet to play a conference game.

Voting is based on a 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, with a 1st place vote worth 10 points. The CIS Men’s Ice Hockey Top Ten Committee is made up of media members from across Canada.

This first poll is always all over the place, but McGill is kind of a surprising omission. They had an excellent recruiting class and their only two preseason losses were to (3) Western and (5) Waterloo.

Typically you see the defending champion ranked #1 in the first poll, but Alberta being #1 doesn't surprise me. I think they are going to be the team to beat in the CIS this year.

Agree - McGill held their own against UMass-Lowell and Merrimack last weekend (both ties). Based on pre-season (which is not always a good indicator), I'm not sure UQTR is top 10. They will be tested this weekend when the play both Guelph and Western on the road to start the regular season. Western is good, has most of their core returning and had a decent recruiting year, but my gut says that Waterloo will be a bit better and it will be a dog-fight between these two for the West division.

My 2 cents: York gets 2 wins, against a mid weight and an expansion OUA team, and they're suddenly Top 10 material? Really. This is like Toronto this time last year.

If an OUA West team moved into the top 10 this week, York certainly wouldn't have been my first guess - Guelph beat a team in last week's top 10 (UQTR), as well as a team that received a few voter points this week (Concordia). Albeit through 2 games, Ryerson also had a more impressive weekend than York.

How UQTR even has votes is beyond me! But in respect to York, they are ranked too high. RMC had a 3-1 lead after 2 in the preseason and probably would have won with a full line up (3 lines, 5 defense playing) but ran out of gas.

Well - at least ALB/CAL will meet for a double-header in a week which should be a pair of good games - and, UNB has to play Acadia twice in the next few weeks.

Whoever loses the ALB/CAL series will likely drop to 4th with an OUA team (likely those dreaded McGill'ers) taken 3rd to represent each conference.

It is always hard to compare one conference to another, but ...

Ryerson should have some votes. I have them just behind McGill and Windsor in the OUA. (Maybe Rob Ford needs to intervene on their behalf so they can drink on roadtrips and not lose points!) Lakehead (8-0), Western Ontario (5-0), and UQTR (4-0) have gotten fat on C level teams. Also, UPEI (3-0) is deceptive. I have them down to #6 in the AUS. They are only 1-3-1 against A and B level teams.

Alberta-Calgary

#1 vs #2 lived up to it's billing.
Two great hard-fought games including a late rally by the Bears Saturday night scoring with 19.1 seconds left and then winning it in double-overtime.
I won't be dropping either team below #3.
Calgary is a big team that is very defensively responsible. Bears have more skill and tilted the ice during the series outshooting the Dinos in both games and 72-52 overall.
Dinos totally capable of winning the Canada West this season.
