</p>The 2010 trade deadline marked a dynamic change in the New Jersey Devils organization, as GM Lou Lamoriello went against his principles to acquire star forward Ilya Kovalchuk—giving up a 1st round draft pick to make it happen. After sending a 5th rounder to Toronto in exchange for Martin Skoula, the Devils went to the 2010 NHL Draft in Los Angeles with just five selections.

With Martin Brodeur aging, the Devils drafted a goaltender for the first time since they selected Jeff Frazee 38th overall in 2005.… read more

Not turning out to be a good draft outside of Merrill.

I think Bleed may be right with Wedge and Faust was an awful pick.
A small defensemen who doesn't skate well.

Considering we had no first round pick and there is hardly any players in the league right now from rounds 3-7 (although Brendan Gallagher came out of the 5th round and Mark Stone out of the 6th ) I'd say that's pretty good. It could've been Dylan McIlrath bad but it wasn't.

I'm satisfied with Merrill despite the sophomore slump. I think we got one pretty good player out of a relatively weak draft where we didn't have a first.

Five years flies by. Here are some pics I took from that weekend:

Lou and Cam Neely talking before Round 2 started. I like to think Cam was talking about being in Dumb & Dumber.

Right after the picked Wedgewood. Staffer is applying the nameplate to the jersey. Wegdewood wasn't in attendance.

At the time, I had completely forgotten Merrill was still available. At #38, I was hoping for Justin Faulk (due to our lack of RHD) or Calvin Pickard (due to our lack of goaltending prospects). Faulk went #37. When they announced the pick, it was announced as "From the US Development Program......". I immediately thought they were taking Stephen Johns whom Conte had praised right before the Draft.

That year was the best D that the USNTDP ever had. Ironically, the first one taken (Derek Forbort) might be the last to make the NHL. Johns got called up this season but didn't dress for Chicago.

Wedgewood was a bit of a surprise selection. Pulkkinen slid down the draft a little further than expected.

Why did they pick Faust?
Small defensemen should be good skaters?

In what world is a dman playing 20+ minutes a night anchoring the 2nd pair in career games 53 through 118 a "sophomore slump"?

Andy Greene was 25 year old rookie and was a reregular healthy scratch his first couple of seasons

And that defense back then was probably about as good as it is today. Martin and White then holy smokes a train wreck...

But here is a blast from the past...

http://fireandice.northjersey.com/mobile/fire-ice-1.174987/greene-oduya-back-in-1.96707
Andy Greene and Johnny Oduya, who were both healthy scratches for Wednesday's win over Dallas will both return to the lineup.

"We just thought it would be good for both of those young kids to watch a game," Sutter said. "It's beneficial for young players and it's what we're doing with Brookbank tonight. He'll go through the same experiences that (Greene) and Johnny went through last game."

Imagine a time when Greene and Oduya were out for Sheldon Brookbank... ouch.

Perhaps "sophomore slump" was a poor choice of words. His second season to me was kind of a roller coaster--some high points, some low points--and I don't think I was the only one around here who was a bit disappointed with it (I remember a lot of people actually thought my grade of B for his season in the player report card thread was pretty generous), but I think Merrill will turn out well for the Devils in the end. Further discussion of this could probably get a bit off topic, though.

Who knows, whoever the Minnesota area scout was must have liked him.

The guy I wanted in that spot was Troy Rutkowski and he hasn't done much either.

Probably, but what I have seen, Faust is a lousy skater and small.
If I can notice that off the bat I would hope our scouts would as well.

Sometimes our scouts hit (Severson, Henrique) but more often than not over the last 15 drafts they have not.

Watching Duncan Keith last night I looked up when he was drafted in 2002.
2nd round, 54th overall,

Keith was drafted one pick after Conte took Barry Tallackson and 3 spots after we took Russian defenseman Anton Kadeykin who was out of hockey after 2004.

Here are some of the next 12 selections after Kadeykin:
Duncan Keith
Matt Stajan
Jiri Hudler
Johnny Boychuk
Tomas Fleischmann

Lou took the fall for Conte & his scouting cadre.

I loved the Tallackson pick. I actually had Tallackson shooting the puck as Golden Gopher as wallpaper on my computer back then.

But My goodness! DAT cherry pick, AGAIN... You are captain Cherrypick.

Look at the picks in the 2nd round! And you are going to Call out Conte?

There are 8...8 legit picks(+ plus Josh Harding) and 24 complete bust that came out of the 2nd round in 2002...8 out of 33 picks = 24% -- So what are the the other 20 teams's scouts and GM that whiffed in that round? This game is so ridiculous it's not even funny.

Dallas Busted 3 times in the second round with 3 picks BEFORE US

It's not relevant on who was drafted before Kadeykin, but after.
And that's who I listed in my post.

Conte's drafting has been a pattern of misses for way too long.
IMO, this June will be his last go around heading the table.

I hope he gives us a few parting gifts to bolster his legacy.

If you want to discuss Conte's "pattern of misses," sure, but don't cherry-pick names of guys we could've/should've/would've had as talking points for your argument. Hindsight is 20/20.

Were you pushing for Keith over Kadeykin while watching that draft? If so, then bring up his name.

You are still absolutely Captain Cherrypick.

This draft is pretty poor after the first couple rounds. Gallagher and Stone were nice finds by Montreal and Ottawa.

It absolutely is relevant when you have a miss rate of 76% for the entire round.

When 20+ teams are drafting complete bust in the round and you're going to try an use one of the 8 examples of success as evidence of a poor record that is just ridiculous.

The Devils without a doubt went through 6 or 7 years of poor drafting...It also happens to coincide with 2 Stanley Cups and 3 trips to the finals and multiple division championships, but beyond that, EVERY team has those drought years, every single one! Except most didn't have the on ice success we did. Name the team and we can find a 4 or 5 year period with almost no players produced.

For every accused cherrypick there are too many posts that blindly defend and justify a consistent pattern of unwise drafting.

I hope Shero breathes some life into the scouting department in personnel, budget and resources.

It's possible that Conte has been asking for more of them over the years and is finally receiving assistance from The New Regime.

Accused cherry pick?

Have you ever made a top 150 prospect list? On your own, with your research and no outside help. If the answer is no, then it's hard to take you seriously.

What? The answer is no for everyone that posts here.
We're fans of a hockey club that discusses things such as our drafting and scouting.
It's not our job.

Let me ask you this.
What grade do you give Conte & our scouting staff over the last dozen drafts?

He gets paid handsomely and many people in his position around the league have been let go when they had underperformed.

Why should Conte and the scouting staff be exempt of critique on a fan message board?
I do not understand the blind loyalty.

Isn't the point of a scout to cherry pick the best talent? Isn't not doing that a failure on their part? Is it really relevant that there are lots of other failures as scouts? There were lots of other bad teams this year too. Do we say "who cares that we missed the playoffs, did you see how many other teams missed the playoffs!?!". I'm not going to hate on Conte as much as DD, but I see his point.
