I think you may be over complicating things. If Buffalo for some reason offered Dahlin straight up for 1st overall I’d give that a long long serious thought by the Rangers.

Franchise #1D is almost always more valuable then a franchise 1st line winger.

You're not wrong, but I'd really want to exploit the situation to the max, understandably so, hence

1OA and Dahlin ballpark cancel
but Rangers need scoring even more than LD, they have prospects

CAR 2020 1st < 8OA this yr
NYR 2020 2nd < BUF 2021 1st unprotected [notwithstanding it is delayed gratification]
Lias < Cozens
Smith < Hutton based on cap hit, tho Sabes can retain on Smith and deal him w/small add as cap relief to Blues for Jake Allen

I admit it. That is way beyond.
But for a guy who is ranked just below the top guys recently [McDavid, MacKinnon, Dahlin] and is entering elc, and fills scoring need for Rangers, I want to be uber blown away.

What if Buffalo offered Dahlin to the Rangers for 1OA and your worst cap dump?

a Buffalo deal starts something like w
8OA, Cozzens and another 1st.
And a player like Pekar.
And Johnson or Samuelsson.
And a little more, like 2d.
A Lindros type deal.
Yes, its harsh.
It probably doesn't happen.

But NYR has no incentive to move 1OA unless overwhelmed.
A "hockey deal" isn't what this would be.

This only happens if a franchise, desperate for change, is willing to go all in, for Lafreniere, because they see him as a 'game changer' of their fortunes.

That don't come cheap.
It probably doesn't happen.
But it wont happen for a package a fan decides seems 'fair'
In this situation, 'pay to play' means overpay, and it hurts

some guys reading this will mock me,
but i lived through the Lindros auction
what i outline above is significantly less
AND NYR not under pressure to act
"1992-Jun-30 Traded from Quebec Nordiques to Philadelphia Flyers for
Chris Simon(25OA, age 20) ,
Mike Ricci(4OA age 20),
Kerry Huffman(20OA, age 24 established D) ,
Ron Hextall(age 28 AllStar G),
Peter Forsberg(6thOA age 18),
Steve Duchesne(27th birthday, top 4 D with 6 straight 70+game seasons),
future considerations,
round 1 pick in the 1993 draft,
round 1 pick in the 1994 draf
t and cash"

Your point is well taken.

Wouldn't be surprised if Melnyk pressures Dorion to package 3+5. Melnyk wants to speed up the rebuild and would love a to have a Francophone star to market. Hopefully we just stand pat with the two picks.

I can definitely see Melynk trying.

I'd rather keep 3 and 5 though. We need top end talent all over the roster, and this draft is deep enough to get two excellent players in the top 5.

And for Laf's sake, I do hope the huge NY market realizes the kid is not Crosby v2.0. He's going to need to get his feet wet in the NHL for a year or two before putting up big numbers. Give the kid a bit of slack and don't dump the weight of a franchise on him right away.
