I'd do it from Anaheim's POV. You don't need to tank to be *A* powerhouse, but you need to tank to be *THE* powerhouse. This simulates a tank.

That package might not be attractive enough to get the Devils to part with a 1st overall. At the same time, none of the guys in the running to be selected there are attractive enough for me to want to do that.

Jersey easily says no. Regardless of this draft being weak, at least Hischier/Patrick have the potential to be a possible cornerstone. Vatanen and Theodore are not #1 dmen, and second rounders are not worth much. Anaheim doesn't have the ammo to acquire #1.

N.J wouldn't even consider this. First overall is still first overall and you need someone with star potential coming your way to even consider trading it. Anaheim would take that trade in a nanosecond

The bust/disappoint factor for every player in this draft is much higher than normal. This is likely 1996 redux. As such, way too much for the Ducks to give up for a player who might top out as a 2nd liner. If the Ducks do trade Vatanen I'd prefer they get an already established young forward.

Safe bet that the Devils will be selecting the center that they prefer.

In the 35 years that the Devils have been an organization, they have NEVER been in the position to select first overall. Not once. That is pretty goddamn ****ing impressive, an honor that any fanbase should be able to respect.

They deserve a top talent. Anaheim will be fine keeping their players.

Actually that's not true. If the Colorado Rockies hadn't signed RFA Dwight Foster from the Boston Bruins. The compensation was the Devils 1982 1st rounder and 2nd rounder while New Jersey received the Bruins 1982 1st rounder and 10th rounder. The proof is right here:

Now you can say that it was the Rockies who finished last and you would still be completely wrong. If the Rockies hadn't signed Dwight Foster, the Devils would have had their 1st pick overall.

Furthermore, in 1983 the Devils would have had the 3rd pick overall; the 2nd pick overall in 1984 (both Pittsburgh and New Jersey were trying their best to finish last the draft Mario Lemieux); 3rd OA in 1985; 3rd OA in 1986; 2nd OA in 1987; and finally in 1988 did the Devils finally finish good enough for the playoffs and pick 12th OA. In 1989 the slipped back to 5th OA. This was all done before the lottery draft.

I honestly remember when the Devils were, as Wayne Gretzky famously said, a Mickey Mouse organization. It wasn't polite what he said but he was right.

It wasn't until Sean Burke played for the Devils that they made the playoffs. It wasn't until Martin Brodeur and Scott Stevens did the team gain respectability and Cup rings.

You really don't know what you are talking about.

Now go ahead and defend your comments and make yourself a bigger idiot that you were before.

If you're old enough to remember when Wayne Gretzky called the Devils a Micky Mouse organization then you should be old enough to realize that you could be discussing things with kids on here. No need to be a dick.

I don't see where it says the Devils picked first overall anywhere in this post...

You can Google "Trading the No. 1 Overall Pick in NHL draft" and find out the success of such trades. In the early days of the draft, taking the pick often lost the trade, but more recently, trading no. 1 OA for a bunch of parts tends to favor the team getting the 1OA pick.

The return proposed is underwhelming for the Devils, and might not even be enough for the Flyers to trade No. 2 or Stars to trade No. 3OA. What might be interesting is if NJ doesn't pick one of the top 2, needing D almost as much as FW, and taking Heiskanen to replace Larsen. It would send a shock wave through the draft.
