TSN - Cecil on boos: 'I’m not the only one struggling

Is it just me or does Cecil's comments rub you the wrong way? The guy seems to not want to be held accountable for his horrendous performance. I would have much preferred he acknowledge the fans displeasure of his poor play and that he is doing everything he can to improve/be better.

Instead he responds with "I dont know if you want to know what I think about it", "I'm not the only one struggling", "I've been in this organization for 10 years", "I've had 3 great years"

What a joke! Seems like he has a sense of entitlement and zero accountability. Who gives a crap how long you've been with the organization or that you had 3 great years. His comments just make me want to boo him more.

Toronto in general has a booing problem. but people that go to Jays game in particular.

I'm not a boo-er, and I do think that Toronto sports fans can be ridiculous at times, but I agree that Cecil needs to step up and take accountability for his performance thus far. In a "what have you done for me lately" sport, people don't really care about his 3 great years.

I think that Cecil can turn it around this year, despite his 0-5 or 0-6 record, and 6 ERA, but in my opinion it starts by taking responsibility for your actions.

I don't care the slightest bit what a frustrated pitcher says in the media. Cecil has been one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball his last 160+ innings, and he's struggled for his last 9 innings.

It's the equivalent to booing Marcus Stroman if he gets roughed up in his next start. It's stupid.

This. He's beyond frustrated, and has cameras shoved in his face every day, this time after being booed. That's part of being an athlete and a public figure, sure, but it would also be remiss to deny the human element and how every once in awhile they may not give the ideal answer, and then boom it's broadcast coast to coast and picked apart by fans. No issues with what Cecil said - he has no history of being a difficult teammate or interview, and always does what he's told. In this case, the microscope should be put away. We're not talking about Papelbon here.

He comes off as a bit of a jackass

People who booed him when entering a game are the ones who come across as jackasses IMO. I could see some booing when he's yanked after blowing a save or giving up a go ahead run. But when entering the game? That's ridiculous.

I agree, if you're booing before he even throws a pitch in the game, you're kind of prejudging, he's had a bad month, but his track record shows he typically starts off slow and ends off great. If he's still stuggling in July, then booing probably is more appropriate than early May.

None of this is too surprising. A Blue Jay fan has the capability to be intelligent and thoughtful, understands the game and what's going on around the league. Is aware of the season, its length, and how the game of baseball works...

Blue Jays fans, as a collective, may be the least savvy baseball fans in the league. The fanbase is an absolute cesspool, which is unfortunate because the intelligence of the few is outweighed by the stupidity of the majority.

Either way, Cecil will be fine. He'll trend upward as the season progresses, as he has in each season since becoming a full time reliever. Still remember last year when people wanted him to be DFA'd. Sigh...summer days.

We should be talking more about Sanchez. While it was always talked about, it's still amazes how an improvement in command like this not only lowers the walks but also ups the Ks so much. His 13.9k-bb% is now not just acceptable but outright good, and that still comes with an elite 60+gb%.

Unlike last year, there's no fluke to his ERA this year. His .278babip and 79lob% are very sustainable, and his peripherals line up nicely with his ERA: 72era-, 82fip-, 80xfip-.

Even his number vLHP look solid and sustainable.

And this while he's impressively averaging 6.4ip/gs on only 97 pitches per start.

This is a legit exciting development. He's pitching at a sustainable 4-5war level, and we know he has the raw stuff to back that up.

Cecil hasn't even been pitching poorly. His luck is that of Loup's last season.

LOB% is about 70%, so it's not like he's getting unlucky with runners on. BABIP is high. Seems like he's just allowing too much contact, even though it's not all that much different in terms of hard contact rates. His k rate is way down, and as a reliever with such a small sample size, that's translated into runs and poor results.

How is that ironic?

Fans criticize Cecil: Justified (not that they're wrong)

Cecil criticizes fans: He's selfish and entitled (not that he's right)

Important to note it's thousand (1000) v one (1).

Last March\April, Brett Cecil did the following:

5.14 ERA
6.13 FIP
1.43 WHIP
.296 batting average and .519 SLG%

Then he went what, like 50 appearances without allowing an earned run? I'm sure he won't do that again, but he's not going to continue like this either.

I was really blown away when they mentioned on the broadcast that Sanchez has not allowed a home run to a right handed batter yet in his career.

I want to jump in on the trade Tulo/Martin thing. Tulo, if he doesn't bounce back, I can see trying to unload. We have capable, above average defensive infielders who can take over for the foreseeable future. Their bats? Well, I'll take the trade off for the massive reduction in salary. But trade Russell Martin? Sure, it would free up salary to sign Jose and EE, but who do we replace him with in the meantime, and for the next few years? Oh, you say...we'll get a comparable catcher back in the deal. Dream on. If we're unloading him because he's not hitting, we're going to get scraps back in return. We have no capable backups in the minors, and I think every starting pitcher on this staff, save Dickey, will tell you that Russell Martin's play calling is one of the main reasons why we are currently leading the AL in quality starts. If our bullpen wasn't ******** the bed all the time, we'd be running away with the division already. So dealing Martin to sign JB and EE is biting off your nose to spite your face. Premature, and, unless we somehow stumble across a suitable replacement, ill advised.
