The 99 draft was at the time considered one of the worst drafts of the era. Dudley orginally tried to get the Sedin twins but didn't have the resources like Vancouver did. Stefan was considered the best player but had major red flags as did Brendl.
Dudley did very well to get out of that draft with all of the picks and players that he did, Dudley's biggest problem is that he couldn't leave it alone or create the right environment for prospects. Nothing highlights that fact more than when he traded Sundstrum and a pick to SJ which looked like a great move for the package he got back until he waived Bill Houlder who would have been an amazing mentor for our stupid young D group.
