5;11 is pretty small. And even 5'11 seemed a bit exaggerated, to be honest.
NHL average is 6'1", take away the D and goalies and it's probably close to 6'.

As for Dats, his height depends on which leg he stands on. I'm sure it's 5'11" on the longer leg.

I like this move. Red Wings don’t have many forward prospects projected to play in Grand Rapids next year. (Similar to last year)

They convinced him to come over on an AHL contract? Didn’t even have to use up an NHL 3 year entry contract. Genius!! And if he does look good… they get 3 full years of cheap entry level service on top of next year. Smart low leverage play.

Looks very talented and skilled in the highlights. And his offensive production overseas looks encouraging. Just became a very interesting follow.

As for Dats, his height depends on which leg he stands on. I'm sure it's 5'11" on the longer leg.

Tampa as an example:

Palat 6'0 - Point 5'10 - Kucherov 5'11
Killorn 6'1 - Cirelli 6'0 - Stamkos 6'1
Goodrow 6'2 - Gourde 5'9 - Coleman 5'11
Maroon 6'2 - Johnson 5'8 - Colton 6'0
(Joseph 6'1)

Forward average 5'11+½

Hedman 6'6
Cernak 6'3
Sergachev 6'3
Rutta 6'3
Savard 6'2
McDonagh 6'1
----------------- Defencemen Top6 average = 6'3 and Vasilevski is 6'3 too.
Schenn 6'2

So you need size/reach on defence and mostly don't need size on offence.

I have high hopes of another Braydon Point Yzerman signing type steal. Pretty sure Pavel himself had good things to say about him

Didn't want to start a new thread, so I'm just gonna put it here.

Has anyone else noticed that KT is the only Russian Stevie has drafted so far? One 7th round pick. A bit odd considering his success as a player and GM with Russians players.

Russians don't want to play here. They want that mobster-y oil money, yo! And Russian gas! What do we have here? Taxes and smelling salts? F that.

He is like Jim Nill, who rather took sheahans instead of kuznetsovs... :P

Kucherov, Vaz, Namestnikov, Nesterov and Gusev in his first 2 drafts as TB GM then it tapered off from there....

I think it's more about Hakan than Stevie. Swedish mafia, lol.

He'll trust his scouts. They had good russian scouts at Tampa. We have great Swedish scouts in Sweden.

We have had that Vakourov there for years, and he is picking nobody. Kadeykin and Tyutyayev are his only ones at 7th rounds. Svechnikov was Marty Stein pick from QMJHL, I think. Could think our Russian Scout is the next guy to leave.

Havluj is Czech, Routa is Finnish-speaking Czech in Finland, Then there is Håkan + Carlsson + newly added Boustedt mostly located in Sweden.

I wonder if there are instructions coming from ownership regarding the drafting of Russian players or if there is something unique about the organization and its reputation that could make it hard to negotiate with Russians.

He has some excellent numbers in Toledo, but his contract is up. I hope he stays with organization, maybe replacing Hirose , they are kinda similar players. And then helping in the couple of years to Buchelnikov adapt NA life.

I like this kid.
He's small. Probably not fast enough for his size.
But he's got really good playmaker's vision and enough feistiness to give him a puncher's chance.

I should have replied to this with my Buchelnikov comment. Tut isn’t the only Russian drafted under Steve

somewhere around nothing
Russian and Finland. There are a lot of good prospects in both countries
Wings have scouts in both country's, Antonin Routa jr czech-native living in Finland and Nikolai Vakurov in Russia. Vakurov worked for Montreal from 1997 to 2010 and was employed by Detroit in 2011. Routa jr was hired by Detroit in 2015, fun fact that his dad Antonin Routa sr worked in Tampa under Yzerman and has worked for them since 2012. Vakurov and Routa sr also worked for Montreal in 2004-2010.

Vakurov's list:
-Russian's drafted by Montreal 1998 - 2010:
Andrei Bashkirov, #132 overall -98, 30 NHL games
Andrei Markov, #162 overall -98, 990 NHL games
Andrei Kruchinin, #189 overall -98
Alexander Buturlin, #39 overall -99
Vadim Tarasov, #196 overall -99
Alexander Perezhogin, #25 overall -01, 128 NHL games
Konstantin Korneyev, #275 overall -02
Andrei Kostitsyn, #10 overall -03, 398 NHL games (Belarus)
Alexei Emelin, #84 overall -04, 456 NHL games
Sergei Kostitsyn, #200 overall -05, 356 NHL games
(Belarus)
Pavel Valentenko, #139 overall -06
Maxim Trunyov, #138 overall -08
Alexander Avtsin, #109 overall -09

-Russian's drafted by Detroit 2012 - present
Alexander Kadeykin, #201 overall -14
Yevgeni Svechnikov, #19 overall -15, 164 NHL games(so far)
Kirill Tyutyayev, #190 overall -19
Dmitri Buchelnikov, #52 overall -22
1 core player and 3 supportive players in Montreal and only 4 players in Detroit, 2 of them are still prospects and 1 was never signed. Svech was drafted from QMJHL but only played there in his draft year and D+1 year. Vakurov most likely did the ground work year or two before the draft.

Routa jr's list
-Finnish drafted by Detroit 2016 - present
Kasper Kotkansalo, #71 overall -17
Otto Kivenmäki, #191 overall -18
Antti Tuomisto, #35 overall -19
Eemil Viro, #70 overall -20
Kotkansalo was drafted from USHL, so most likely he was spotted by someone else than Routa. Intresting fact is that Kivenmäki, Tuomisto and Viro all come from west coast of Finland. Routa lives/lived in Rauma and Rauma is also located in west coast of Finland. In fact Rauma is between of Pori where Kivenmäki & Tuomisto comes from and Turku where Viro comes from. If you want be an armchair scout and see who's Routa is scouting, check out these team's

Low round picks should be targeted for russians. 5-6-7 rounders. Not anything from North America, which is super-heavy scouted.

The transfer agreement with russia is different, you keep the player rights forever. So all russian picks should be these late-bloomer guys, like Pavel was. We can wait them forever. There's no rush to sign them after 4 years, or lose them because they want to be a New York Ranger.

Just build a plan.

Håkan takes the highest Top picks, no matter where they are. That has been working phenomenally well.
Then Draper and NA guys work the mid-rounds.
Low-rounds ALL russia.

No Russians. No cups.
Not in Detroit.
Not in Tampa.
Stevie needs to get a good Russian scout.

Yep. That's 100% the reason. You figured it out!

Man, I'm sure glad that Nikita Kucherov, from America, was able to be such a huge hit.
And that goalie... what's his name? Andrew Vase? Oh, Andrei Vasilevskiy.

2011 (Yzerman draft)
Namestnikov... from Russia
Kucherov... from Russia
Nesterov... from Russia

2012
Vasilevskiy... from Russia
Gusev... from Russia

Gap here, to be sure..

2016
Sosunov... from Russia

2017
Alexander Volkov... from Russia
Alexey Lipanov... from Russia

2018
Dmitry Semykin... from Russia

He was throwing darts at the Russian board.
Two of the three best players that Tampa had in winning their Cups were Russian.

I hate this incredibly ridiculous "technical truth" that Yzerman didn't win a Cup in Tampa. Motherf***er, that team was loaded for bear and 75-80% of the players that made the back-to-back Cups possible were drafted or acquired by Yzerman and took cheap deals because of Yzerman and the culture he set.

But for some reason, you're gonna f***in crown Julien Briesbois for trading a couple firsts for Brandon Hagel, a first+ for Barclay Goodrow and/or Blake Coleman?

Oh wait, I forgot, this is from the same source as "fire Blashill and install Bylsma (who was already on the staff) and the Wings instantly acquire 50% more of the available points".
