Typically a mod runs these polls, but I'm getting a bit antsy so I want to get them going. I'll leave the threads open for 48 hours or when there's a clear winner. I'm not listing every prospect in the poll, only guys I think have a chance of receiving a vote.

With that being said, who do you think is the best prospect in our system?

EDIT: Poll has been added. I went with Vince Dunn.

Dunn is the clear choice for me, just had a stellar year in the AHL as a rookie.

I agree. I liked what I saw from Walman on Saturday, and then I remembered Dunn is a year younger, put up 45 points in the AHL, can also skate well, and is showing he can play with a little edge.

Voted for Barbashev, but Dunn is a close second. Barbashev was probably just as impressive this past season in the AHL as Dunn, then handled himself quite nicely in NHL call-up duty. I expect him to take another big step in training camp and make the NHL team when camp breaks, especially with Bergy sidelined.

I think Dunn probably impresses in camp in that regard as well, but Gunnarsson may still be blocking him at that point, though I hope we trade Gunnar to make room for Dunn and clear cap space before American Thanksgiving. In fact, I wouldn't be opposed to rotating Dunn and Walman back and forth from the AHL #1 LD spot and the #3 LD NHL spot throughout the year to get them both some NHL experience. If they're both improving enough to earn full-time NHL duty in 2018-19, that gives us the opportunity to move Bouwmeester next offseason and clear some more space for guys like Fabbri, Edmundson, and some additional help up front if needed.

I think it's pretty clearly Dunn in the #1 spot. Fantastic year for a 20-year-old rookie in the AHL. He's got the tools to be a legit top-pairing defenseman. I think he has a pretty good chance of making the team out of camp this year.

Well... what do we mean by "best/top"? Do we mean upside? Or do we mean performance to date?

And are we still counting guys like Barbashev, Sanford, Schmaltz, and Binnington who have played NHL games?

I think it's hard to look at our prospect pool and not say Barbashev is at the top right now, because of the progress he made last year, and the fact that he ended the regular season centering Tarasenko and Schwartz. Dunn might be very good one day, but that is something he did not accomplish the defensive equivalent of.

But if we're talking about just straight-up upside, then maybe it's a different conversation, but I still don't see Dunn offering the biggest impact to our team unless he literally reaches his ceiling as Duncan Keith pt II. If we're just talking about upside, I'm going with Kostin.

But if we're talking about a combination of the two, maybe Dunn is the best we've got going for us. Idk, I'm still putting down Barbashev for now.

That was my dilemma. Barbashev is the most ready, but I don't think he has top line upside. Defensively responsible 2C is his ceiling. Dunn has star potential. So readiness vs potential vs likelihood to reach potential vs some combination? Its up to the individual voter how you want to rank them, so I don't think there is one right answer here.

This gets asked every year, and every year the answer is that we each have our own criteria that usually factors in NHL readiness, floor and ceiling, and maybe positional need. There is no way to enforce/impose something more uniform to our voting system. Anyway, its just a fun exercise.

I thought there would be more votes for Walman here. Training camp is going to be fun this year, because there are some real possibilities for rookies to force their way onto the roster.

Vince Dunn all day everyday. I haven't been this excited watching a kid come up since I first started watching Parayko in Alaska. Dunn is going to be GOOD.

This. I love how those on the main board are like who the hell is Vince Dunn. Just like they did with Parayko. Watching Dunn in the AHL this year was like watching Duncan Keith play in Rockford when he first went into the AHL. Plus their styles are so similar. This D-Corps we are going to have is amazing.
