Wonder if he could end up being someone like Zach Hyman. Very hard working forward that gets rewarded by going to the tough areas and creating havoc.

Pre-Draft scouting report on Patrick Moynihan.

After we get past the big six forwards on the USNTDP, Patrick Moynihan should be the next forward to hear his name called in Vancouver. Given that he was clearly overshadowed by his elite teammates for much of the last two years, the Providence commit still flashes some of the high end skill set that had many believe that he would be the star (after Hughes) of the class when the team was originally being put together.

It hasn’t quite worked out that way for Moynihan yet, but the Massachusetts native will have a very good chance to play higher up the depth chart next year with the Friars experiencing a lot of turnover among their forward rotation. He has the chance to vastly outplay his draft status within three years.

Skating: Moynihan has a nice second gear that he can get to when he has open ice in front of him. He has an active motor, and pivots well. He keeps his feet moving and forces his opponents to act. His feet give him the downside of an energy line forward.

Shot: Gets good heft on his shot. Have seen him score with both wrist shots fired from the rush as well as one-timers from the slot. Moynihan is a versatile offensive threat, but his game edges slightly closer to the scorer side than the playmaker side. Outside of the USNTDP’s vaunted top six, he was the most likely forward to fire one at the net – and the most likely of the bottom six to score.

Skills: Despite his shooting proclivities, Moynihan has the skillset to impact the game offensively even without shooting the puck. He can set up teammates from behind the net. He will occasionally flash nice puckhandling ability such as when he cuts to the middle after carrying the disc up the wing. Has good possession ability and can be difficult to strip from the puck. Can feather a pass with good timing to help generate a scoring chance for. I get the impression that he can take off in a more offensive role at the next level, much like USNTDP alum Will Lockwood has at Michigan.

Smarts: A diligent, versatile forward, Moynihan can play in a top six, offensive role, or in a defensive posture, taking faceoffs and killing penalties. He has good vision and reads the play well. He knows his defensive assignments and attacks them, creating havoc with the pressure he places on the opposition. For what it’s worth, his +32 was tops on the USNTDP program.

Physicality: A little undersized, but Moynihan is aggressive and loves to hit. He looks to overpower his opponents. He will line up players to hit them in the corners and will do the same at open-ice. He plays with intent. I am not sure he can continue to maintain this style as he proceeds in his career without muscling up too much, but his aggressive nature so far works to his team’s benefit.
