Omg that video on the right with Foligno. He called the play on Russia's third goal "another lucky pass"

SO disrespectful!

About half was Canada's TSN and RDS, so the other half was what Russia and the States? How widely broadcasted was it outside North America? Was it shown on any major networks in Sweden/Finland/etc?

During the broadcast it was mentioned that the game was on the top Russian station for the first time ever

Yeah, which makes the win so much more awesome for that country. I mean, it could end up increasing interest in Hockey even more.

That 14m would be TSN's numbers. TSN is only available in Canada, which means that about half the country watched at least part of the game.

No, the article stated the total viewers around the world was 14.2m, with 6.88m of the number coming from TSN and RDS, meaning roughly a 4th instead of half of Canada watched the game and accounted for a little less than half the total viewers.

No it did not. It says in plain and simple english that a total of 14million Canadians watched part of the game on TSN or RDS. Peaking at 9 million in the middle of the 3rd.

No, 14.2m unique viewers on TSN and RDS.
"Overall, the game was watched by 14.2 million unique viewers ... who tuned in to watch some or all of last night's broadcast on TSN and RDS."

14.2m Canadians watched parts of it.

Edit: Somebody corrected him before me, oops

SVT (Swedish equivalent of the BBC) showed it.

A dramatic game and now a dramatic audience! Overnight data from BBM Canada confirms that a record audience of 6.88 million viewers watched last night's 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal game on TSN and RDS. Overall, the game was watched by 14.2 million unique viewers - or close to half of the country's population - who tuned in to watch some or all of last night's broadcast on TSN and RDS.

TSN's average audience for the dramatic game was an outstanding 6.23 million viewers an all-time record for the network and the most-watched telecast on Canadian television since the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

RDS registered its second highest audience ever for a World Juniors game with 652,000 viewers.

There's nothing inconsistent with this press release.

It's pretty simple actually. There are three different metrics TSN is showing us here.

Average audience (The average of the total audience over the course of the broadcast, these #'s are shown for both TSN and RDS as well as the combined sum since they're both part of CTVglodemedia.)

Unique viewers (The total number of individuals who tuned into at least portion of the game, more or less like unique hits on a website. Shown as the combined sum for TSN/RDS)

Peak audience (A snapshot in time of the broadcasts peak viewership. Shown as the combined sum for TSN/RDS)

So we're left with:

Average Audience
TSN - 6.23m
RDS - .652m
Combined - 6.88m

Unique Viewers

Combined - 14.2m

Peak Audience
Combined - 9.3m

Just for comparison's sake these are the #'s for the 2010 CAN - USA Olympic gold medal game.

Average Audience
16.6m

Unique Viewers

26.5m

Peak Audience
22.0m

2009 WC final had about 34 million viewers in Russia. 14 million is sure impressive for Canada, but for Russia, not so much. Even more so if you were thinking it was combined audience.

I don't think the juniors was on TV in the States or if it was on a channel I don't have.

I actually forgot about the World Juniors with the several weeks of college football bowl games and NFL playoff runs. Between watching all the bowl games, watching Ohio State basketball, the Blue Jackets, and trying to get 100% playthrough of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood 2 and Gran Turismo 5, I haven't had much time for other sport recognitions.

The final was broadcasted both live and with like a five hour delay here on National TV. Almost 7 million average in Canada is nuts, but what were you to expect :)
