And we've come to give credit to this group to do the sensible thing, so why is our faith so easily derailed?

I'm not sure that in the history of this board we have ever expressed this level of collective faith in management after a controversial drafting decision:

I am confused, but I will trust in Francis. He has done nothing to make me question him

It says a lot about my faith in Francis that I'm merely skeptical, not angry.

Francis really hasn't done much to have us questioning his drafting, as Rutherford did.

Well, I hope that Francis know what he's doing.

uhh... I don't like that. Prove me wrong RF, please.

Well, not what I was expecting, but I trust the process.

I trust Ron Francis

and I trust Jake Bean until he proves otherwise

I don't know why? Like? Jimmy Rutherfurd was just called the gm of the year!!!1! And Carolina let him go for no reason...

Jimmy won the cup for us in 06, you may not remember that but he did

And he won the cup for Pittsburg too. Has Ronny "Frachise" ever done that? :help:

Call me when "Franchise" proves he can even make the playoffs. Over half the teams do you know, so if the #hcanes can't, it just goes to prove what a mediocre at best manager he is.

:sarcasm:just in case...

Outside of Faulk and Hanifin, I feel like the rest of the D has complimentary offensive ability. You can make the argument that adding a guy that can be a productive 1st offensive option on a pair fills a need.

I was hoping Murphy would fill that role long-term. 5 seasons into his career, however, we have yet to see his natural offensive skill translate to the next level consistently. I now question his future in Carolina, particularly considering his waiver status and the new 40/70 expansion draft exposure rule.

We cant draft now based on having good d now. We have no idea what the D will look like in three years. If this guy was the best prospect than we had no choice, though I was surprised too. Our young D excels in good transition but none of them have any real higher level offensive ability, wheres Bean may possess that which would mesh well with our group.

This guy has good lateral ability and is a good shooter, two things Murphy isn't so the Murphy 2.0 comments are off base. Murphy is at his best sprinting straight forward and that's about it.

Saying three years from now Bean won't have a home on the left side because of Slavin and Hanifin is nonsensical. Of Faulk/Pesce/Hanifin/Slavin and the AHL guys I would bet it looks different than it does now.

This isn't a trading chip, unless you think Murphy or one of the others is being moved this summer and Bean is the replacement.

This is a good take and something I had not considered. RF specifically pointed out "he's a guy that can run your power play". Slavin and Pesce do set up more defensively-oriented IMO, and so far Fleury's development appears he's headed that direction as well.

if you're ideal is to set up complementary pairs long term, an offensive guy paired with a defensive/2-way minded guy:

Fleury-Faulk
Hanifin-Slavin
Bean-Pesce

with only Slavin having to play off his side, but he's done that before effectively enough that it's not a concern.

This pick could be fantastic for us in a couple years. We'll get through this upcoming expansion draft relatively unscathed, but I think there's another one that'll come up in a couple years where Hanifin, Slavin, Pesce (and depending how long, Fleury and McKeown too) won't be ineligible. If it's sooner, then I think it's either Slavin and Pesce that's traded and then Bean (assuming everyone pans out) takes that spot. If it comes later, then protect the 3 best, trade the best player of the 3 unprotected and fill your holes with Bean and a UFA. One thing is for sure, if Bean pans out, he won't the guy that's moved with 2 more years in the WHL and then 3 years of ELC after that, he'll be a cost controlled asset for a while.

Initially I was surprised they didn't take a forward, but the way the Draft fell I can see how Bean would be their BPA.

Didn't watch a lot of Bean as I focused on the forwards. Some of my thoughts:

- Bean's game is built around intelligence and joystick movement which seems to be a calling card for the Canes.
- I have consistently seen reports that he has the highest ceiling of any D in the Draft. This fact combined with the Canes success in picking D recently gets me excited.
- He reminds me a lot more of Slavin than Ryan Murphy
- Glad to see Bean can play some RD

Over the past week we have been inundated with reports of many of the high asset value teams searching for top-4 D. This position seems to have the highest relative asset value of any in the NHL of late. Jones for Johansen is a good example.

I'm interested to see how Bean plays for a full year as the clear #1 (without Sanheim). He reportedly stepped up well while Sanheim was at the WJC and injured.

Now there's a thought. If we have another expansion down the line, and there's no reason to think the league won't go to 32, there's no way we're getting out of that one without losing a top 4 dman. So best to cash in on that while we can instead of losing it for nothing.

And agreed with the last part entirely. Bean's not the trade chip, he's cost controlled for 5 years, Bean's the guy we use to replace whoever's traded in 2-3 years.

I still has a confuse the morning after though. We're the best young defense in the league but we have significant goal scoring problems... and we're adding another dman...

If I could ask Francis 1 question it would be how closely the scouting staff compares Jake Bean to Morgan Rielly in 2012. The Hurricanes were apparently very high on Rielly. I think the two compare very well (smarts and skating) and that is a ceiling I'd be very happy with for a #13 OA pick. Jake needs to put on a lot of weight to get to that level though.

I'm coming around on this pick from where I was last night. I think it was more the disappointment that we could have fixed the lack of top-end talent and goal-scoring in our F pool in one fell-swoop with 3 F in the first two rounds.

For what Bean brings that is different from what we have defensively, I think it's good add. Also, learning that like Slavin he's comfortable on both sides makes this make more sense.

It wasn't my favorite pick, but much like Nashville with Jones, Carolina now has the ability to trade a strength for a weakness and not lose depth. It's a good pick in that he can round out that offensive game on the back end with Murphy faltering.

I was exceptionally high on Bellows and I was disappointed my two favorite teams passed on him last night. Hopefully Bean and Fabbro become the next big things on the blue line.
