They talk about this absolute BPA, but who knows if Yzerman is using organizational BPA, which includes the position.
With equal group of players, let's say 5 players, 1 Center and 4 wingers... of course you take the center, because that's organizational BPA.
Organizational BPA = including the need.
They don't have an equal group at the top. They have clear rankings. We've seen this time and time again with leaked videos and pictures. The bad drafting teams pick Broberg because they wanted Seider and ignored Zegras because they have McDavid and Draisaitl already. The good drafting teams take the players that keep dropping and who are clearly levels above in term of talent... thanks to the reachers.
These people are paid the entire year to do just that. Fans have tiers because we don't nearly have as much time and ressources to clearly separate players. They have videos, meetings, combine, interviews... they will have favorites because of all the information and opinions they have. If they have "tiers" in the top 10, then your scouts just do no have confidence in their choices. If they rank position of need at the top instead of better players, then they aren't ranking players on who they truly believe is the best. You should change your scouts.
People act like the top of the draft is the only way to fill up a position of need. There's 7 rounds for a reason. There's free agency for a reason. There are trades for a reason.
And so what if the 2C is still a vacant spot? The team isn't even close to competing (which is why they pick in the top 10). A top 10 pick isn't used to fill a position, it's used to fill the roster with talent.
