This BPA argument is so stupid.
Hockey player judgement isn't a video game. You don't can't tell the difference between an 87 rating and 89 rating at 18.
You have players in tiers - based on all kinds of factors - and then you pick the one who makes the most sense.
So if you've got 3-4 guys you really like at 8, chances are if you really need a kid at a certain position, you pick the guy at the position you need.

They talk about this absolute BPA, but who knows if Yzerman is using organizational BPA, which includes the position.

With equal group of players, let's say 5 players, 1 Center and 4 wingers... of course you take the center, because that's organizational BPA.

Organizational BPA = including the need.

They don't have an equal group at the top. They have clear rankings. We've seen this time and time again with leaked videos and pictures. The bad drafting teams pick Broberg because they wanted Seider and ignored Zegras because they have McDavid and Draisaitl already. The good drafting teams take the players that keep dropping and who are clearly levels above in term of talent... thanks to the reachers.

These people are paid the entire year to do just that. Fans have tiers because we don't nearly have as much time and ressources to clearly separate players. They have videos, meetings, combine, interviews... they will have favorites because of all the information and opinions they have. If they have "tiers" in the top 10, then your scouts just do no have confidence in their choices. If they rank position of need at the top instead of better players, then they aren't ranking players on who they truly believe is the best. You should change your scouts.

People act like the top of the draft is the only way to fill up a position of need. There's 7 rounds for a reason. There's free agency for a reason. There are trades for a reason.

And so what if the 2C is still a vacant spot? The team isn't even close to competing (which is why they pick in the top 10). A top 10 pick isn't used to fill a position, it's used to fill the roster with talent.

Also there's only one 2c spot. It's important but it's short sighted to say it HAS to be filled by the number 8 pick this year. We have one of the best trading gms in the league. If he makes the decision to draft a winger or dman the next two drafts even and thinks he can swing a trade for a young top six center I trust him.

Bulllshit. THis is not a science. There's not an exact measurement on this stuff.
Unless you have a guy who you believe is truly better - you draft the guy you need.
We've seen this over and over and over.
These guys don't know who's going where before them. They usually aren't pining for one guy that much over the other - anymore than you or I are.
The further away they are from #1 - the more likely it is they have several good options in front of them.
Maybe, from time to time, someone will fall from way on high on their list and be absolutely above the others by the time you get around to picking.

If you continue to draft wingers, over and over and over, you end up with a shit team.
Because you need centers and defense to win.
If you go 10 years and draft 1 LD and 2Cs and 0 RD in ROund 1 - you're going to have a shitty rebuild unless you get super lucky.

Agreed. Centers get picked over more talented higher upside wingers every year. If anything it would be more accurate to say they pick the best C or D available unless the winger is so much better you can't pass him up.

Yeah, and that happens for a reason. Winger stats are almost always inflated vs. Center.

Like I said, smokescreen. He knew who he was going to pick, no hesitation. Just like last draft where he skirted a question about Edvinsson pre-draft.

Instead of BPA, they should call it PWLM, "player we like most", lol.
