Your team's "goaltenders of the future" who didn't pan out

Who immediately comes to mind when you think of some "goaltenders of the future" who were supposed to tend goal for your club for many years, but for some reason or another it didn't pan out?

Doesn't necessarily have to be players who were considered future elite netminders, but goaltenders who were looked upon highly by the organization and fans.

For the Habs I think of:

Steve Penney - Was immediately considered a future star after his performance as a rookie in the 1984 playoffs. He won 9 playoff games to go along with 3 shutouts. He went on to have a decent season in '84-'85 before becoming the backup in '85-'86. He played 15 games over the next 2 seasons for Winnipeg before being out of the league for good. Thank god for Patrick Roy. I remember reading in Roy's biography that Penney didn't really take his training seriously and that the early success may have gone to his head.

Randy Exelby - After 4 seasons playing in the CCHA, the undersized goaltender moved on to the Sherbrooke Canadiens where in his 2nd season he would be named to the AHL's First All-Star Team, was the co-winner of the the Harry "Hap" Holmes trophy for fewest goals against allowed, and captured the Aldege "Baz" Bastien Memorial Award for the AHL's Top Goaltender. He was rated 5th overall (top goaltender) for Habs prospects in THN's '89 "In The System" issue.

Les Kuntar - In an early 90's issue of THN's Future Watch, it was said he was considered what many believed to be the Habs "goaltender of the future." He played 3 seasons in Fredericton (AHL) and ended up playing 6 career games for the Habs. Now I'm not sure if he was actually a highly rated prospect, or if the writer of that particular article was just very high on him. That was the only time I ever read or heard of him being considered a "goalie of the future."

Mathieu Garon - Some fans believed he was the better goaltender of the two during Theodore's time as a number 1 goalie in Montreal. When Jose struggled, many were quick to offer him up in trade proposals because they believed Mathieu was the better goalie of the two. Also, many scouts were said to believe Mathieu had much higher potential than Theo.

I also remember some fans being very high on Vadim Tarasov (7th rounder in '99) after we got him under contract.

The Town Fun Forgot
Ottawa Senators liked Mathieu Chouinard so much that they drafted him twice.....once in the first round and once in the second. He never played a game for the Sens but did finish his career with an impressive 3 minutes played for the Kings.

The main guy that I remember in Boston:

Mike Moffat -- An 8th round pick in 1980, Boston thought they had struck gold when Moffat eventually won 33 games for Kingston Canadians (Bernie Nicholls was there too).

Moffat was the named best goaltender at the 1982 World Juniors.

He got called up for the playoffs in 1982 after Boston got mediocre goaltending from a soon to be retired Rogie Vachon and Marco Baron. Moffat helped Boston beat Buffalo in round one.

In round two, however, Boston lost to Quebec in 7 games, losing game 7 at home.

He looked to be in an ideal situation for a young goaltender, playing for a defense first team with Gerry Cheevers coaching.

Boston acquired Pete Peeters from Philly in summer 1982 and Moffat couldn't even hold the backup job, eventually going to the AHL and giving up almost 5 goals a game.

By 1984 he was retired.

For the Flames, uh... every young goalie they've had since Mike Vernon... :(

Let's see, there was Jason Muzzatti, Trevor Kidd, Tyler Moss, Dany Sabourin, Brent Krahn, Matt Keetley, Curtis McElhinney...

J-S Giguere and Dwayne Roloson turned out okay, but not in Flames uniforms. :/

...and Eric Fichaud

Arguably Felix Potvin
Injury related-Mike Palmateer

a guy with 200 career wins who was great in the playoffs and played a couple all star games arguably didn't pan out?

Potvin is almost the only leaf drafted and developed player who did pan out since 1990..

Vancouver: Corey Hirsch, Troy Gamble, Kevin Weekes, Mike Fountain, Felix Potvin, Dan Cloutier

The all-time Montreal goalie bust has to be Ray Martyniuk.

For the Avs, Marc Denis, coined heir apparent to Roy. Seemed like he would be dope, think he backstopped CAN to back to back golds at WJC. But played something like 32 games for the Avs then got traded to the BJs

Generally speaking, goaltending has been far and away the team's strength for the Habs since Roy left. It's been traditionally one of the Habs strengths and has continued since 1995.

That's what I mean, some young goalie comes out playing amazing, but after a few years he drops off, and they pick up another goalie who comes out playing amazing

Gary Kurt for the Seals. Played around a dozen games in 71-72, then was off to the WHA where he bounced around for a few seasons. Notable for being one of the few goalies of that era, along with Espo, Crozier and Villemure, to wear the catching glove on the right hand...

For Washington people will say the obvious choice, which is Jim Carey. But a few years earlier Jim Hrivnak was rated very highly in the Washington organization. He was their number 1 prospect in both THN's 1990 & 1991 "In The System" issue.

Exelby's 3 minutes of fame with Montreal occured because Roy had to take a pee.

I think Kuntar was actually the US starting netminder in the world championships in 1994.

There was also Maxime Ouellet, who was supposed to be the big haul from the Oates trade.

Senators had Ray Emery, Rangers had Al Montoya, Flyers had Brian Boucher and Blues had Marek Schwarz for other recent guys.
