I would like to point out I wanted to keep this away from trade rumors etc so people's ideas don't get lost amongst other things posted in there.

I thought it would be a cool idea to run through different salary cap scenarios over the next few days-weeks since we have the time due to the pandemic.

This scenario would involve a static cap. It doesn't go down but it doesn't go up.

Rules

  • You can only make 3 major trades - It would be classified as moving a roster player making above $1M
  • You can make unlimited minor trades - It would be classified as moving a player in the organization making below 1M. Example: Gauthier being traded for a 5th would be classified as a minor deal.
  • Show your work
Show us your work, ideally done in Capfriendly :)

Mikhayev 2 yrs at 2M
Spezza 1 yr 700k
Perry 1 yr 900k
Richardson 1 yr 1M
Bitetto 1 yr 750k
Dermott 1 yr 975k

Not sure if I offered up enough to Minnesota. I figured that Koivu would be moving on or sign on cheaply for 1 year again with the Wild. Eric Staal is getting up there in age. Victor Rask isn't so good.

Ek doesn't figure to be a top 6C while Kerfoot might be able to hold down a 2C role with them. Kerfoot wasn't the best fit in Toronto as a 3C due to a lot of smaller skill guys already in the line up but did hold down 2C in Colorado previously.

Dubas brings in a RD but we're unsure if he's going to be effective.

Let us see what else you guys have.

Yes, I know in advance, I'm going to get flack for this team, but I'm ok with that.
TOR

  1. Boqvist, Jesper
  2. Foote, Nolan
  3. 2020 1st round pick (NJD)
NJD

  1. Marner, Mitchell
  2. Rights to Dermott
--------------------------------------
Traded Kerfoot for picks/prospects
Traded Johnsson for pick/prospect

------------------------------

Signings are slightly below market, mostly because of the cap squeeze.

Hall $6.5 mil per - He's averaged 58 points per season the last six years, so it's about right, even though he has tremendous upside. Close to home.
Tanev - 3 years, $4 mil. Ok, he's had injury issues, but that guarantees that Liljegren can get time in the lineup.
Voynov - 1 year $4 mil - He had a great year in the KHL, and was a very good #2D in the NHL in the past. We have a good rapport with Russians, and it's a try me contract in the NHL. I understand the blowback this signing would create, but also appreciate any outrage would disappear in 15 minutes, when people find something else to get upset about. He's a far better D, than the contract. One year contract also puts us in a good spot with the Expansion draft.. it's basically Holl that is exposed as a D man.

The RFA/UFA signings, that were on our team last year, show up on the Cap Friendly sheet.

With Nolan Foote, we get a young kid, who can play a heavy game for us in the future, and overall, this is a far better team defensively, with a top 10 2020 pick, and some nice prospects added to the pipeline. I love Marner, but moving him frees up space, to balance the team out.

Forward lines aren't necessarily how I'd run the lines, the players are just kind of thrown on there... probably move things around a little to make it work.

trade rielly for the devils for the canucks 1st round pick + islanders 2nd round pick (2021) + fabian zetterlund + Kevin Bahl

use a buyout (compliance if allowed, regular if not) on kerfoot (i doubt we'd be able to trade him at full salary and he's super, super replaceable)

trade johnsson to buffalo for their 2nd + 4th

re-sign mikheyev to a 2 year, 3 million dollar deal

re-sign dermott to a 2 year, 4 million dollar deal

re-sign clifford to a 2 year, 3 million dollar deal

sign pietrangelo to a 7 year, $70 million dollar deal

sign shore to a 1 year, 1 million dollar deal

re-sign gauthier to a 1 year, 900k deal

re-sign malgin to a 1 year 900k deal

re-sign veronneau to a 2 year 800k deal

trade kapanen to the rangers for the hurricanes 1st round pick

assuming compliance buyouts allowed (implying kessel was bought out by the coyotes, which relieves the 1.2 million dollars we're retaining on him):

hyman-matthews-marner (24.8)
mikheyev-tavares-nylander (19.5)
robertson-engvall-malgin (3)
clifford-shore-korshkov (3.75)
gauthier, veronneau (1.7)

muzzin-pietrangelo (15.6)
dermott-holl (4)
sandin-liljegren (1.8)
rosen (.75)

andersen (5)
campbell (1.65)

total = 81.2

2020 additional draft picks: canucks 1st, rangers 1st, sabres 2nd, sabres 4th, islanders 2nd (2021)

EDM needs help at forward and we need a RHD who can play a defensive game. Not sure a third gets it done but I wouldn’t want to pay a higher price unless we have an extension in play.

Buffalo needs help on the left side after Dahlin and McCabe and Dermott is still young and has upside. I just think he is expendable with Sandin showing more upside.

Lastly Wings need some forward depth a third isn’t much.

Our C position on the third line gets better defensively and adds some much needed size and grit. I also think he has more offensive upside than has shown in Buffalo. I would expect 30-40 points with two decent wingers.

Spezza will hopefully sign another 1 year deal but I would like to have Korskov play 15-20 games to keep Spezza legs fresh for playoffs.

Long term deals for Mikheyev, Larsson are signed in season. Mikheyev 3x3 and Larsson 6x5.

Well atleast you prepared/expected to receive flak.

I dont know which is more unrealistic. trading marner for so little, signing Hall for 6.5 million, or Dubas going against everything he stands for as a person and signing voynov to a deal.

Wonder in an alternative world where this happened how the team would fare.

A Few Things:
  1. Not trading Marner for futures
  2. Hall is not signing for $6.5 Million
  3. Toronto won't touch Voynov - PR Suicide

I would love to see Toronto sign Voynov for the sole reason of how triggered the rest of the hockey world would be.

1. If Trading Marner for very good futures, makes the team better into the future, it's worth it... #6 OA, Foote and Boqvist is a pretty healthy return, for a guy making $11 mil, even if he's great.

2. Hall's averaged 58 points per season the last six seasons... if you take out that ONE good year, it's more like 51 points per season. That's less than Nylander in points, and he's a bit of a health risk, having missed substantial time.

3. Yes, that's where I expected blowback. PR Suicide for about 15 minutes, until people become outraged with the next thing... the outrage wouldn't last long, and it would only be amongst a few fans.

In all trades like the NJD one, it depends on when the trade is made. If done at the draft, where is NJ picking?
If the Leafs can get Ty Smith instead of Boqvist, Foote +a top 5 or 6 pic? I would be listening for sure. Not a big fan of Boqvist to date, not to be the big piece coming back. Smith is a legit d prospect, Foote looks like he should be a decent mid 6 winger with size and snarl, and if the third piece is any of a Drysdale/Stutzle/Raymond/Holtz/Askarov id be listening hard.

I'm just going to assume I'm way off on the Marner trade and Avs fans would be doubled over laughing by now, but that's not really the point. I'm not here to argue what a Marner return would look like. The point is Marner goes somewhere for futures without much of any cap hit.

I think you are da closest to what Dubie will actually do. After the bad trade last summer I think he will be a little leary of having 2 bad trade summers in a row. But Dermy will need to be much below 3M as i think the AJ trade happens early to mid next season. probably 1 year at 1.25M. even Mik 1 year at 1.25M too. Dubie has to give himself a little room. He can't be like this past season.

I think he is just more than happy with what he has got internally, especially with the likely flat cap and expansion coming up next year. His previous trading is not going to make him tentative going forward, especially since it was not poor. Otherwise, he may as well quit.

Depending on how Barabanov does in replacing Johnsson, the offense is as talented, if not more talented, than last year and while the defense is young and unproven, it is very talented in its own right with a good amount of quality insurance on the Marlies.

Once expansion is dealt with, in which I expect Seattle to take Holl (since he is likely the best option for them by far), I can see the Leafs trading Kerfoot as well. They will need to acquire a cheaper 3C (which I would not be shocked is some European like Julius Nattinen in the same vein as Barabanov replacing Johnsson this year) and then they will use the money freed up from Kerfoot and Holl + any kind of cap increase to pay for raises to Andersen, Korshkov and Hyman (assuming they are reasonable) and to find a quality defenseman to replace Holl. The money freed up from Holl and Kerfoot + the cap increases should far outweigh the money required to sign a guy like Nattinen + the raises, so there should be a good amount of money to find a quality defensive option to replace/upgrade Holl.

It may or may not be a talented defense but it is absolutely not a strong defense at all. Leafs chances at the cup are almost nil if that's the defense they're going to run.

It is very young with Dermy, Sandin and Lily and inexperienced with Holl. Only 2 vets and only 1 with Cup experience. I think in 4-5 years it will be top 5 in league but as it stands today it is bottom 10 for sure. With CAP likely at same level as last year with bigger escrow at least that is da guidance to players. It is gonna be really hard without an AJ trade to sign everyone with 4.5M left in CAP. To get another vet defender we are gonna have to trade AJ + Kappy/Kerfoot to make numbers work. That is why I think we will try it out to start year. Plus we will get more for AJ once he shows league he can play again at same production levels. Then AJ straight up for a right side defender at same AAV could work.

People thought our defense last year was going to be bottom 10 as well. Turns out it was league average, despite long term injuries to Muzzin, Rielly, Ceci and Dermott.

I can see the Leafs being perfectly satisfied with those 6 defensemen and then entering the "prove-it" market for another couple of guys, similar to Ben Hutton in LA last year. It is going to be tough for a lot of mid-tier UFA's to find places where they get paid good money, but the Leafs can offer them up to 900k on one-way deals to compete with Sandin and Liljegren for a bottom pairing job, and if they can't win it, they still make good money as a primary call up in the AHL.

Honestly, I thought our defense was well below league average, and somehow was masked by above average goaltending at times... though eventually that failed us too. But we are 26th of 31 teams, in GA... I'm not sure that is average defense.

It means we had basement level goaltending. Source naturalstattrick.com:

We essentially did a total 180 from last year. Last year, Andersen/Sparks was bailing out the defense all of the time. They took a bottom 5 defense and essentially took it out of the bottom 10 on their backs. This year, they turned a league average defense (with a ton of injuries no less) and essentially made it bottom 5... And it all had to do with letting in a ton of weak goals consindering their HD save percentage was actually pretty good. Is Andersen entirely to blame? No, but no matter how you slice it he was not up to par at all. Hutch was awful and thankfully was replaced (we should have just kept Sparks but that was out of Dubas' hands). However if Andersen plays like he did the first three years here (our team save percentage was 6th in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018) and Hutch was nothing more than replacement level, we are probably just outside the top 10 in GA even with the injuries. Now that we have Campbell, who should be an above average backup, I expect Andersen to recover enough to get us back to at least a top 10 tandem, which with those 6 defensemen, should hopefully mean we have an above average defensive team.

Here is one I did because a wings fan said it was “impossible”.
My premises

1.) we will lose dermott in expansion so might as well dump him now and get something back and focus on a top 3

2.) we will have to get rid of 2 of The 3 forwards. So might as well try to get retention

Moves

1.) kappy/dermott for zacha retained and prospect
2.) AJ for a 2nd
3.) kerfoot for Robertson.

I haven't followed Carrick at all since he left the organization. He's become quite the AHL player. Probably a AAAA type of player--just by looking at his stat line.
