Sure. I get not wanting Domi. But they could have picked SOMETHING. Instead they picked an AHL free agent who they let walk back to his old team. They literally got no value at all from the Columbus pick.

A team with limited exposed talent and you have limited roster spots. Why waste a roster spot on someone you dont want?

Finally a move Kraken fans can be happy about...the GM made a good move! Shoulda taken some high end players in the expansion draft instead of a bunch of no namers tho! That will bite the Seattle franchise going forward

He had to pick 3 goalies, he likely didnt plan on signing grubauer. There was limitations he was playing within. Any idiot can say look at it now. But these decisions have a huge number of variables and the scenarios are endless. Francis lost his bets but got his goalie so win win for him.

Then take random UFA plug goalie from Philly, Chicago, or Columbus instead of taking random UFA F/D plug like he did. If he's going to throw away multiple picks anyway, then those are the ones he should use to fill out the requirements instead of getting one 2nd(Vanecek) instead of two 2nds(Dillon) in his more important picks.

Because you can trade them for draft picks or prospects. Vegas flipped Methot, TvR, Emelin, Schlemko, Kruger, and Pickard for picks following their draft (plus all the picks they got in “expansion draft considerations” trades, of which Francis had none). Picking up nothing from a franchise is inexcusable.

Could've picked Dillon and he would've gotten a 2nd + a 3rd from a worse team.

Also could've picked Zadorov and moved him for a 3rd. A lot of great players have been selected in the 3rd rounds.

Huge L for Francis.

You overrated draft picks.
Very few great players have been picked in the 1st round let alone 3rd round.

Name all these great 3rd round picks the last 20 years....

I don't know why people are complaining about Francis here. This strikes me as one of very few good things he has done so far.

Because he could have had Dillon and traded him to us for 2 seconds. This basically equates to a 2023 2nd rounder to stay away from Washingtons roster in the first place.

Yes, SEA missed a bit on this one. But if future events were that linear and predictable, even the most incompetent GM in the history of the NHL would have taken Dillon in the expansion draft if they had known WPG would trade two picks for him later. But that's hindsight.

It's not like GMKC from WPG came and told GMRF to draft Dillon and he'd send over two draft picks but GMRF refused and insisted on taking Vanacek so he could settle for one pick instead, somehow knowing that Grubauer would come to SEA later.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anyone point out that Brenden Dillon or Nikita Zadorov were clearly going to have trade value to other teams before the ED. If anything, I saw it mentioned (only half in jest) that SEA should take like 6-7 goalies since so many good ones were available and flip some of them for picks.

Hindsight is 20-20. He wanted a good combo goalie. In the end he got the goalie he wanted. Everyone can say now that Dillon may have been more valuable but team composition has to be considered. This is not a good aha for people to say he did a bad job. Wait til the games are played and if Grubauer stumbles then go ahead.

What a fail by Seattle. They could have gotten a pick like this to NOT take him, and then take someone else that could actually play for them...

Its just bad asset management from Francis and has been from the get go.

So essentially from the Cap's perspective: Seattle paid us a 2nd rounder to take Dillon (who we left exposed anyways)

It's his job to know. He should've gone through some of the potential picks and then called all the GM's and ask what they'd pay for these players if they would've picked them.

So, then no.

I believe this is their only draft and trade so that should tell us it was not a priority for them. Bit of a cop out to make these assumptions with the source being "his job is to know".
