Bah. Sucks that 7 years post draft we still don't know what he is. Lots of skill, never got an opportunity. Wish he would have given us one more year, but I don't blame him.

Happy for Phillips. The Flames never gave him an extended opportunity. The Capitals are in flux and his AHL coach is now an assistant there. Probably his best opportunity to prove himself and he got a good payday with that one way deal. Go get ‘em!

Lame that the Flames wouldn't even give him a chance after all his success in the AHL. Obviously, given his size, it's understandable why is a long shot, but you never know. Seems like the Flames just burnt an asset for no good reason

Really happy to see Phillips get rewarded with the one way deal though. He definitely deserves it.

I doubt he will make the Caps, but best of luck to him. If he was just a bit taller and heavier he would be sure fire.

Good luck Matthew. As far as I'm concerned the Flames really screwed the pooch with this one... just like they did with Mitch Love.

The Caps try to make sure they have quality tweeners for Hershey. They could be graduating some good players to the NHL team this fall.

At best, he sticks and Love is there to be a familiar presence in the NHL. If he can't crack the lineup, Hershey gets a quality player for their Calder Cup defense, he gets paid, and the Caps have a veteran AHL callup. Good stuff.

Good luck to Phillips. I'm sure Washington will like him.

I really like Phillips. Seemed he never had a real shot and Sutter disliked his size, but regardless of outcome, glad he should get an actual shot to see if he can play in the NHL.

Think there is a real chance the Flames regret this, and I think most fans are just happy he gets a shot.

I think there's a 2nd line winger there. I could be wrong as he's very small. 165 is pretty generous from what I've seen. I'd say closer to 155. He's not super fast, but he's very agile and has excellent vision and hockey sense. Shame we didn't see what we had in him. Especially since we played Lucic in the top 6 for 15 games straight.

Hope he gets at least a dozen games in on a scoring line so we can see what he is capable of. Pretty good chance he never makes it in the NHL but you never know until he gets a real shot.

Yeah, even with lead weights I doubt he's 165lbs, I talked to him once and if he's 5'7 then I'm 6'3...and I'm not!

Yes, Gaudreau was the same. I got a picture with my wife and him and Monahan. I'm 6'1, Monahan was taller than me. Gaudreau was at least good 6 inches shorter than me and was listed at 5'9". I haven't stood beside Phillips, but he's short. Shorter than Wes Gilbertson in skates.
