Damn. I really was hoping he’d shake free and the Sabres would sign him to a deal very similar to the one he got.

Nice deal. I still don't really understand what the Caps are doing.
here's what a local caps blog has to say: Capitals Rumors Roundup: The Latest Rumors Surrounding Washington And The 2023 NHL Trade Deadline

"GM Brian MacLellan has talked about contract extensions with pending unrestricted free agent defensemen Erik Gustafsson and Trevor Van Riemsdyk. Friedman said MacLellan is trying to see who is open to extending their contracts, what they want in their next deals, and if it makes sense for the team before making decisions."

"LeBrun tweeted on Friday morning that as late as last week Washington was still having contract negotiations with Gustafsson and Jensen, who can also become unrestricted free agent on July 1. They were struggling to re-sign Orlov, especially with term, before trading him to Boston. Friedman said that Washington was not looking to go beyond three-to-four years with Orlov, who wanted close to eight on an extension."

It seems like they're selling everything they can that won't be around next year.

It’s the best choice to ensure they’re at least competitive moving forward. This year was a mess and they were still in it until the end.

To recap the season: the Caps have the most man-games lost to injury in the NHL this season. They started without Wilson until 2023 and then he got hurt again after eight games all the while his replacement, Connor Brown, tore his ACL four games into the season, Carlson suffered a season-ending injury in January, Kuemper missed time, Backstrom missed half the season with hip resurfacing surgery and has been working his way back, Dowd (best 4C in hockey — change my mind) went on IR in January, Kuemper was hurt, etc.

Also, this sell-off isn’t surprising. The Caps started the year with 11 players on their 23 man roster entering UFA status this off-season and their GM said this year would determine a lot of their futures. This season didn’t work out and he made moves.

They won’t be on anyone’s short list of Cup contenders next season but they can still be good enough to compete for a playoff spot.

This deal is perfect. Love it. Jensen is surprisingly already 32, so not giving him a ton of term was important to me. But they managed to keep it to 3 years and keep the AAV very reasonable for the type of player he is. A+ contract.

Also naming a bunch of dudes that aren’t getting younger and injuries are apart of it. Their bodies will continue to deteriorate and will lose speed.

Just like the Pens, the Capitals simply don’t have the big guns to keep up with the much younger and more skilled East teams.

Capitals may be able to sneak into one or two more playoffs while Ovechkin is there but that’s about all they will be able to do.

Nice deal. I still don't really understand what the Caps are doing.
1) They had been holding contract talks with their pending UFAs, talks that were going well or poorly with individual guys.
2) The team was going to miss the playoffs.
3) The team is committed to Ovechkin and Backstrom, so a tear-down rebuild was never in the cards.
4) So they decided to get something for the UFAs they didn't want to keep at the price.
5) They wanted to get younger.
6) They wanted to avoid giving crazy term to older players (see Orlov, who is 31 and wanted seven years).

So they dealt Orlov, turned the return and Gustafsson into 23-year-old Sandin, and re-upped Jensen at a good cap hit that doesn't go for too long.

They also cleared roster and cap space to go after a youngish top-four D in UFA or trade this summer, and promote some combination of Alexeev, Iorio, Chesley, or Johansen.

It might not work, but they got younger and leaner on the back end. Now they still have to go out and find a replacement for Orlov in the offseason.

Jensen at $4M?
Jesus.
Good for him.
But I walk away from that shit, easy.
all he's done is improve since his time as a Red Wing, as improbable as that seems. guy's mobility is just nuts right now

this seems like it goes pretty hand in hand with the Sandin move, and now the Caps potentially have a potent and cheap 2nd pairing again or options beyond that.

Now try watching him play

Ridiculously good deal, no idea how they got both the term and the cap hit so optimized. Thought he'd either be 4x6 or 7 or 5+ at this term.

Extremely solid mobile two way D who has become a lot like prime Niskanen minus the hitting

Niskanen in his prime put up 46 points.
With the hitting.
