5-1 loss

To be fair most of us didn't, he wasn't exactly lighting it up at Michigan.

I recall someone (not me) last year talking about how people were being too negative on him. It was his first professional season on a dumpster fire team and they said he was progressing as he should last year in Charlotte. Can't remember who said that.

Still, I don't think any of us thought he'd be as effective as he has been (albeit small sample size) this early.

That was probably me. He got a bit of a bad rap at UM but some of it was definitely deserved. His sophomore year, I believe his coach dinged him for his work ethic even though he didn't have a particularly bad year. The reality was that the coaches knew with the skill level that he had he should be doing better. Apparently the last 6 or 8 games of the season Phil put his head down and started listening to his coaches. Even though his production in his junior year was down from prior years he scored more goals, scored more game winning goals, and always seemed to score the big power play goal. Something like 60% of his production happened in the last 30% of the season (my numbers are probably off but you get my drift). Basically he grew up.

When he came to the Checkers he played up and down the line up often with different linemates but as you say he had the coaches support and they felt that he was developing the way that he should. The results really came to fruition this year. In short he's a bit of a throwback to how players used to develop. Time in the AHL did what it was supposed to do for Phil.

pdg is a monster

i didnt even think he was much of a prospect going into the year

i am not smart

I'm super impressed with him, after coming into the year with a similar feeling that he wasn't even on the radar.

What I like most is that he's willing and able to play a blue-collar game, but he has a startlingly quick and accurate shot from in close when he gets a chance. That's a model of player we haven't really seen much in this organization. A bit like Tlusty, but with a higher offensive ceiling IMO.

But without a fun anagram of his last name.

He's got two very noticeable NHL qualities other than a very good shot. His vision is really overlooked by many. The two passes he made vs. the Islanders confirm that. And the kid has world class hands. The puck seems to stick to his stick.

He also definitely has NHL speed. He looks faster and niftier than almost all of our forwards. He's gonna be at least a good 2nd/3rd line scorer in a few years IMO.

Oh ****. Lack is "under the weather" according to the Jet's broadcast. Even left the practice early.
