Strange that the Jets wouldn’t give Chiarot 3.5 a few years ago and just paid 2 seconds and 3.9 for a comparable. Not ideal asset management
Don’t disagree, but maybe they didn’t realize the impact guys like that have a year ago mow and realized if they’re gonna go for it they need this type of player

Don't care about the picks but we really need NHL caliber D in our lineup now. We draft well enough outside the 1st/2nd rounds so we always seem to find NHL players anyways but this gives us a need now.
I'm the 10 years the Jets have been here via 2.0 we've never drafted a top 4 D outside the first or second round. Some good depth FWDs but D scouting is an issue

Or defensemen. Point stands, they had a guy that filled a need, surprised they couldn’t make it work. We are talking 3.5, you can always make that work if willing

Ya, I don't think they were interested in Chiarot at that price. Maybe they regret that now, especially with Buff leaving

If at that point they knew that Buff and his 7 million wouldn't be back they would have signed him in a second. Buff really screwed the Jets over. And hard.

Keep in mind that all moves done in the 2019 off season were done under the understanding that we had our #1 Dman locked and loaded for a few more years. He told the org he was out a few nights before the start of training camp. His contract was on the books until regular season had started and he was LTIR’d and that alone really handcuffed Chevy as fsr as cap hit goes

When Cheveldayoff let Chiarot walk, we were looking at paying our top 4 ~$21M, and importantly didn't lack size on our D on account of having Byfuglien penciled in on our top pairing for at least two more years.

Unless one knew that Byfuglien was going to retire and walk away from $14M, letting Chiarot walk was the right decision.

I don't think Savard is going to end up with that, him getting the same contract as Dillon (or a very similar one) seems pretty reasonable to me.

Trouble is it sounds like he is ending up in Montreal

Jets will likely still go after him, but we will see.

This move was a bit of an overpay, but they absolutely had to improve the defense after the last two years with where the rest of our team is at.

Wow, what a terrific audience.

didn't have a massive need for him at the time and cap space was limited. The top 6 D was supposed to be..

Morrissey - Buff
Kulikov - Pionk
Sbisa/Beaulieu - Poolman

Then Buff retired, which opened up a lot of cap but by then it was to late as we already made the decision.

Chiarot was a cap casualty, not someone we chose to lose

Byfuglien left the team about 2 months after Chiarot left for Montreal in UFA. We assumed we didnt have the space at the time.

2 second round picks seems a high price to pay for Dillion but then again its very hard for Jets to get players to sign in wpg (at least thats what some reporters have said )

They didn’t hAve the projected cap room to sign him. Remember there was this player named Buff that was on the books for $8mm

Somewhat of an overpay from Winnipeg, but it's for a solid player who fills a need. Good on Washington here, they cleared some cap space and got some good assets in return.

Dillon - Pionk
Morrissey - Demelo
Stanley - XXXXXX

That...looks better than what they had before.

Love this trade for the Jets, exactly what they needed to be paired with Pionk, Dillon adds size, defensive minded and physical/nasty. Fair return for the Caps also.
Yup. Classic win-win scenario. Caps clear space that they needed and get positive assets when they were in a bind, Jets get a solid top 4 defenseman that is just what they needed locked up for the current window (of course, the Jets are already set up for their next window better than most teams) at a fair price

Dillon is basically a #4 defenseman on a contender.. 2x 2nd rounders seem like a lot.

From what i saw the Caps last season, i thought Dillon was in trouble quite a bit against the faster teams.
