People making the argument that this was 'Auston's first down season' and it would therefore be unfair to compare it to Stützle's season seem to mistake Matthews' numbers, as this season is perfectly in line with the numbers he has put up prior to last season. In fact, last season seems to be the exception and not the norm.

Stützles points per game this season is higher than those Matthews has put up in 5 of his 7 seasons and Stützle's season totals this year are projecting to be higher than those Matthews has put up in 6 of his 7 seasons – it is only last year that seems to be out of line.

Considering this, Stützle's age and the contract situation, the argument to take Stützle over Matthews is pretty solid.

Come on now, there's no room for logic among leafs fans on this.

If you want to approach this with logic, you should be tackling your fellow Sens posters who are attacking AM's playoff record and stats, when Stutzle (or also compared months ago - Tkachuk) have yet to even make the playoffs. AM hasn't missed them.

Something about glass houses...
"Glass Houses"....Jesus.🙄

It's very simple. Sens are in a rebuild and are not expected to make the playoffs yet. Next year they should take crap for not making it.

Matthews has had no playoff success with a very good team. He rightly takes shit for it.

You know that's how it works in a Salary Cap & Draft TEAM sport league. So don't play dumb.

Stützle would have had to have Gretzky or Lemieux like seasons to drag the Sens into the playoffs on his ELC. Hell it took Lemieux 5 years.

Or maybe you are saying the rest of the leafs were as bad a team as the Sens and it was Matthews alone who got them in?

Matthews is the better even strength point producer even in his off year vs Stutzle's peak.

Hes the better goal scorer, PP or ES.

And hes miles better defensively.

Its not as close as people would make you believe. Stutzle is fantastic - and maybe he gets to a top 5 calibre player one day, but hes not there.

So why are Sens posters commenting on Matthews playoff numbers in a comparison with a "rebuilding Sens" player then?

Maybe wait and see if Stutzle can even make the playoffs before trashing guys that got there. I don't know.

Heading into this season, I'm not sure that was true from the talking heads. Ottawa had a lot of hype and very much expected to be a playoff team.

Stützle was literally tied second behind MacKinnon in even strenght points in 2023 like two weeks ago.

They were at best a bubble team on everyone's list. Consensus fan expectation was playing "significant games" in March.

Losing Norris for the season along with long stretches of Zub & Chabot didn't help. Playing the most important part of the season with 5 & 6th string goalies pretty much ended any Hope. Losing Formenton also sucked.

Plus points are the growth of players like Stützle, Sanderson, Brady , Brannstom & Pinto. Acquisition of Chychrun is amazing.

Any reasonable fan will be somewhat letdown at what could have been but happy with progress.

Starting next year healthy with the top 6/9 F and top 4/5 D set, they will have no excuses for not making the playoffs.

Solid LOL...absolutely not . Are you talking about next season or in 5 seasons?
The hardware AM34 got isn't a fluke amd he will likely win gje rocket again perhaps as early as next season. He could contend for a hart. These are not predictions these are based on history and facts. There is absolutely nothing to suggest Tim challenges for either. The fact that AM34 started the year very slow played injured amd admitted had an off year and still has more goals than the other player having his best year!! This is easy .
There may be one maybe 2 players in the NHL ( and one coming ) that you woukd trade AM34 straight up for and tim isn't one

At the time of posting both Matthews and Stutzle had the same ES points and Matthews had played less games - so given this is notably Matthews lowest shooting % season including teammates on ice s% --- safe to say Matthews is likely the superior ES scorer.

This isn't even a question at the moment with the current contract status of both players. Timmy incredibly easily.

I think it’s tougher than most make it out to be.

I go with Stuetzle but barely. Mostly because of contract considerations. An extended Matthews makes it more difficult and closer.

You want to win now ???of course any player with a superstar like AM34 does...this is easy , matthews is in a different tier. Some teams value winning over cap space . The fact matthews has had a down year, played injured , and still matching in goals while being the MVP and rocket winner from.last season. I would consider Nylander for tim , does that work for you ?

For fantasy hockey, maybe. Not for winning actual games:

Then you basically have to take any decent player signed to term over Matthews which is a dumb topic because the question is do you take 8 years over 1 year.

If you look at the two players in question the topic is laughable

I’m not so sure, no one had The Leafs making the playoffs that year and another high draft pick was expected. The consensus this year was that The Sens would make the playoffs.

Regarding the trade I don’t think either team would swap as the both players address their needs/timeline.

No shit, Sherlock.
The consensus was they would come up just short.

The irony in this statement is absolutely rich considering how hard Leafs fans push Matthews being equal to or better than McDavid...
I dunno man, Im sure there are a bunch of morons that are like 15 years old saying that but majority of us always viewed Matthews at best 2nd to McDavid but that doesnt mean McDavid cant be beat on a season to season basis and thats what happened last year.
Matthews trumped McDavid as the best player in the league. however it was just for that one season, even if a player beats McDavid they have to prove they can again and again and again

YAWN

Last year saying he was arguably a better player and the fact he swept the awards is not far fetched. No one is saying that this year for good reason.

Oilers fans are so insecure with this topic I don't get it. McDavid is better. Happy?
big brother/little brother mentality. both our teams should just be happy with our players but nope both sides have to fight like kids all the time. (Ive taken part in this too)

star forward marner happy is also important. Its hard to value superstars unless they have long term deals . Tim will get paid too at some point and we don't know.where AM.34 wants to go with his salary. If both players were signed for 8 years and the same age then there is more to consider. Right now Matthews give s the leafs a better shot at winning NOW. Thats worth the extra cap hit
Ya Matthews makes 10.7 million more NOW

and as to the bolded, yes he will get paid 8.35 for 8 years.
