Think of it in the same regards as the Sharks did with Brent Burns. Both him and Gelinas did play forward before converting to defense. Burns adds size and some mobility with his skills. Gelinas brings a cannon of a shot and the skating ability to move the puck in all directions. Plus, his defensive work, while still in need of work, would be acceptable in a forward spot. Same with Burns. Although he has Joe Thornton to ease the adjustment.
Take into consideration the other defensive prospects in the pipeline. It opens up a spot in the top 4 and allows you to keep one of Santini, Severson or Helgeson and allows someone like a Faust or Scarlett to possibly make the team as an extra player. Years from now you might have something like this:
Greene-Larsson
Merrill-Santini
Helgeson-Severson
Extra: Faust or Scarlett
Plus, can you honestly say what the top nine will be in five years? Probably Boucher, Matteau, Zajac, Henrique, and Black, with a maybe for Coleman, Kujawinski, Bell, Pietila, Lokti, Sislo.
I do not think there is a good chance of this happening, but it is a feasible possibility that I would support. It all depends on how the team develops and acquires forwards in the future.
