Here's how Winnipeg acquired game 1 lineup. Not a single NHL FA signing. Unbelievable job by Cheveldayoff and his scouting staff:
Draft - Draft - Trade
Draft - Trade - Draft
Draft - Draft - Trade
Draft - Draft - College FA

Draft - Draft
Trade - Trade
Draft - Trade

Draft

Damn, that is impressive

I think the jets had many players in the lineup while they moved the draft picks through the system. They would have signed Frolik for their price and where not willing to overpay for him so he left.
He was a guy that Chevy really wanted but was smart enough to back away when it didn’t make sense. Kudos again to GMKC.

Winning does attract UFA Patrick Marleau is proof of that, you think he signs in Toronto if he was a UFA in 2016? not a chance but fast forward 1 year The Leafs are young skilled and winning and they became a viable option.

If Winnipeg keeps winning players will come

I think the following elements pretty much decide a ufa's priorities:

Post tax earnings
Weather
Desired level of anonymity
Team competitiveness
Family fit

To what proportion these elements are weighted depends on the individual player.

For Winnipeg, I don't think it's ever going to be as attractive to UFAs as it is right now because they can really trump that competitiveness card, which is really the only card they have, unfortunately.

Bottom line, Winnipeg will always be a tough sell, but at least they have hope at this stage of their competitive cycle.

It is a good thing we have global warming then. I do not think the weather has much to do with it since they are on the road half the time during the season.
Weather has a lot to do with it. And it’s more than just the player. Most of these guys have families with kids. They are going to be in Winnipeg year round. It’s never going to be an easy sell.

As mentioned before, the younger generation whom the Jets want likely are not that attached yet with kids. But unless you have actually lived here, you are making assumptions on how bad the weather is in Winnipeg. If the Jets start to win on a regular basis, it will not matter what the weather is like here, players want to play for teams that give them a chance for the cup.

It's really odd being a fan of both the Jets and the Rangers. I cheer for the team that's one of the highest in desirability for FAs and the other is the lowest. Thankfully, the Rangers have slowed right down on the crazy contracts for players they shouldn't be going after.

There aren’t a plethora of 24 year old UFAs out there the jets need to convince to come to Winnipeg. So yes, most of the time the jets will be trying to sell people with families. As for needing to visit Winnipeg to make a coment on the weather, come on, it’s widely known as the worst city in the NHL to live. It’s one of your negatives. Just accept it

If you need UFAs to win, you're not doing it right if you have the philosophy and strategy of the Jets. Stastny was a good addition, but by next season the Jets should have enough organizational depth that they won't need a rental like that.

Players want to win in hockey markets. The problem is they really don’t want to loose in hockey markets.

When the team is good it attracts more players for sure but some can’t take the pressure and stay away.
