Considering nine of their players have fought in the NHL before, you'd think the Canes will end up with at least one fighting major this season.

Anyway, I'm sure this is their main concern right now. Apparently they've been making calls to Jesse Boulerice about a potential comeback.

I'd expect the 'worst' team to have 5-10 fights.

The NHL should award the Stanley Cup to the team with the most fighting majors at the end of the regular season, and the President's Trophy to the team with the least.

Ah, the Boll crusade has moved from our boards to the main boards. How exciting.

Maybe we can trade Boll for one of those softies like Jordan Staal. :sarcasm:

It's a physical/ emotional sport. If they have 0 fights all season they lack balls and heart to stick up for themselves and for there fellow teammates.

It's coaching. For better or for worse.

Let us be objective and look at the other side of being a disciplined but low-fight team.

Canes only have 33 minor penalties this year. The next lowest is Columbus with 46. The Canes average 2 entire minutes less of penalties per game compared to the 2nd lowest penalized team.

Compare the Canes 33 minors to Nashville's 86 minors. Nashville plays over double the PK that Carolina needs to.

I'd imagine someone will eventually get run bad enough for someone to snap. No amount of coaching could prevent that and it usually happens to every team at least once.

Very unlikely it happens, but it would only be a respectable feat if anything. Surely, fighting is a part of hockey, has been and will likely remain as a part of it for a very long time, but the time of icing goons just for the sake of getting a boxing match on the ice is almost at an end. I rarely find fighting interesting when it's happening on the ice, especially if the ones fighting are just some 4th line bums who only rack up penalty minutes and there is no rivalry involved. Who cares that goon Joe beat goon Jim in a fight? I'd rather see just hockey. Sometimes it's alright, tempers tend to flare and it's a physical game where you have to stand up for yourself or your team.

That's the thing, the Canes don't play the kind of "heavy" game that leads to lots of fights. We've complained for years that teams are able to follow Skinner around and take liberties without any consequences, so even that doesn't seem to be enough to trigger a response.

Most likely if it happens, it'll be because of someone running the goalie or something like that.

IF YOU DON'T FIGHT YOU HAVE NO KAHUNAS, YOU HEAR ME?

I wouldn't be surprise to see Brock McGinn drop the mitts. He likes to lay the body, which is super uncharactaristic of most canes.

But yeah, an unwillingness to play with a nasty edge or retaliate with fisticuffs has always annoyed me about this team (with the notable exception of the Tim Gleason years)

I guess you have to blame the coaching- you had Peter Laviolette forbid everybody from fighting, and then be like "now excuse me while I go to Philly and have them do the exact opposite". I always wondered if it was like a marketing plan in response to analysis of the fanbase, like "Hey, now wait a minute- this is family friendly Raleigh what with all the tech industry people. They aren't a bunch of lunch pail savages like in Philly or wherever who like to see face punching"

Oh, didn't know. Why is that? Coaching mentality? Doesn't want them getting involved in anything?
