I thought Wideman was a pretty good offensive Defenseman in the AHL but his diminutive size was going to be his Achilles heal weakness in the NHL, and it turned out to be so. He is just too small and not highly skilled enough to overcome his weaknesses. I wish him well in Edmonton. I see him as a PP specialist and 6-7 Defenseman at ES.

Harpur was playing good before he got injured

Some good plus not so good. I am not sure if Harpur is anything more than a #6-#7 Defenseman. I hope he develops into a Chara-type defensive defenseman but that is high hopes indeed as he does not play big, mean, nor as effective as Z.

With Harpur being ready to return, it makes sense. They want to see what they have in him and Wideman has been surpassed on the depth chart with the emergence of Lajoie and Jaros. Really no sense in carrying 8 defensemen especially when you have a guy like Wolanin in the minors waiting for his opportunity. Return is whatever but I doubt there was much of a market for Wideman. I imagine trading Wideman was an avenue management explored in anticipation for Harpur's return.

Only way this makes sense is if it's so Eugene saves enough money to let Dorion get us a decent backup. Otherwise we lose a depth dman for peanuts and it makes it look like the Uber ride had a bigger effect than we thought.
