We sucked for 20 years because of one reason: shitty ass offense.

Only Kovalev in the last 20 years was a PPG player. Once.

Everytime we drafted high a forward he sucked. And when we had the chance to pick a good one, we picked a Dman.

As long as we wont have one or two PPG forwards we will go nowhere.

And Suzuki, Caufield, Slaf, Dach arent.

And we have absolutely no good offensive forwards prospects in our prospect pool. Beck and Mesar arent.

That team has no speed offensively .

RHP, Monahan, Gallagher , Pearson , Armia , Roy all very slow.

Caufield , Suzuki, Slafkovsky are not slow but not fast …

That’s why we need to part with Monahan ! To Acquire a late 1st (maybe) and to find someone faster next year !

Got to Finals one year though. Plus semi finals twice. In 10 years, not that bad. Would have got to Finals twice if not for Kreider
Covid years... we wouldn't have made the playoffs in a normal year. It was the biggest fluke run ever and was because Weber, Price and Byron were on their last legs.

Last time we made the playoffs in a normal was 2018, Markov's last season with the team.

Correct, we had quicker teams in the past.

The good was that we got Matheson, Anderson, Suzuki, Which is good asset mangement is why we are not in the basement. On the flip we have an aging gally, and lost Sergachev and Price which might negate any of the good.

2009: No head scout would have made it out alive the Bell Centre if they passed on Leblanc. I'm also convinced development played a huge role in the pick failure. Obviously, Kreider, Johansson or Palmieri would have been great.

2010: I wanted Brock Nelson and was convinced we traded up for him when the trade happened.

2011: Beaulieu was a good pick if you look at what was picked after. You have to go for #26 Danault for a bona fide better player and we got him anyway for cheap. Also likely would have been better in a era where his off-ice would actually been better monitored. Those years were insane.

2012: Galchenyuk, a lot of it is on development and off-ice stuff. No real homerun close either.

2013: McCarron is a big miss with Theodore and Hartman. Although a lot of the 25-35 was crap.

2014: Scherbak a huge miss again. Kempe and Barbashev would both be great. I was full on board on the pick though. Never developed in the pros. I personally like to blame Sly, but we're not in a sim so who knows.

2015: Feel bad blaming Juulsen for taking puck to the faces. Aho would have been great though.

2016: Sergachev was a great pick traded too soon for not enough.

2017: There was no way we were picking Oettinger with Price/Montoya/Lindgren/Fucale/McNiven/Hawkey. Apart from that, it's more of the same until 14 pick later with Robertson. Maybe Tolvanen or Frost, but not convinced they would have done well in MTL.

2018: Tkachuk would have been a better pick than KK, although I didn't like him and still don't like his knucklehead. There was also Hughes, but that would have been a "put both balls on the chopping block" kind of move at 3.

I think one part that has hurt a lot in those years is the constant need to trade for depth players that should have came internally, either from later picks or UDFA. We are just starting to get an influx of players from devlopment to fill roles that we normally would have to pay for salary and/or assets.

That is because we had better drafting (before 2007) and better free agents in the 20 years prior to 2021 Finals.

They should have been trading those picks in the 20s for help, they all busted anyways.

Bergevin could never get a center and by the time we were about to make the Kotkaniemi pick, Ryan O'Reilly was available. He'd go on to win the Cup with St. Louis the next season while we wasted Carey Price with a crap forward group.

Bergevin couldn't pick a lane, he was trying to hoard picks while also trying to ice a competitive team.

2012 and 2018 are disappointing. You really want to hit on those high picks.... at least someone who can play alot of years even if it's not a top liner.

Many of these years, the Habs picked late, so it was slim pickings, but you don't want to strike out completely on those picks either

I think worse than that was the complete absence of late round steals except Gallagher in that period. We only kept our seconds in weak drafts. Strongest draft in the longest time and we come out with Juulsen and Vejdemo in the top 90. Didn't even keep our fourth rounder. Took Matt Bradley a few picks before Kaprizov.

Trading for Shaw still makes me sick, we easily could have ended up with DeBrincat and Girard or Lindgren since his brother was in the org already.

Keeping picks in 2012, 2013, 2017, and 2018. Aren't scouts supposed to know when drafts are going to suck? Most crapped on the Romanov pick but he's likely the best player in that round, same with Lehk in 2013. Maybe Durzi over Romanov.

We finally kept picks in a strong draft in 2019 and have 3 nhlers already. Other drafts are too early to say anything.

From 09-19 the only post-second round draftees by us, other than Gallagher, to play more than 200 games were Andrighetto, Evans, Mete, and possibly Pezz in the future. A third line winger, a fourth line center, a #7 dman and a 14th forward.

For you it's HOF or bust for first round picks?

I assume you're only talking about first round picks or you might want to check the drafts again.
1st rounder which is what the table referenced
