Voted Vancouver and Pittsburgh, since you gave me two choices. Tampa, Boston and Toronto all have enviable cap situations.

How is Toronto winning the poll when they at least have good players taking up the cap

Edmonton has a boat load of crap and no cap space, it's them

Edmonton. Toronto is in rough shape but at least they've got a competent management team that will be able to figure things out.

The Oilers have over 6M in dead cap space (buyouts + Manning), 6.5M tied up in arguably the worst goaltending tandem in the league, and the worst forward depth in the NHL. That roster is laughably terrible and they're still two seasons away from any cap relief from expiring contracts. At least they'll have 12.5M come off the books next summer when McDavid demands a trade.

CapFriendly has the Rangers at $72,730,609 and Trouba is their only major FA.
OP has them at over 90m

These numbers aren't even remotely accurate.

Vegas has to rely on Clarkson on LTIR to make the cap, but at least they are a good team. Vancouver still has Boeser to sign and their bottom-6 is littered with overpriced junk.

Voted Canucks. Their team sucks and they are still up against the cap. At least the other teams are in a good position no matter which manner of way they go about shedding salary.

Being a cap team isn't a bad thing if your team is good.. I mean at the end of the day that's what every team (at least virtually every team) is striving to do. For the sake of argument, if a team like this wanted to free up a lot of cap space to not "win" this poll they could just give away a good player or two who teams would take with open arms and still not completely suck.

Then there's a team like Edmonton that's struggling to even stay .500 wanting to add good players but they can't because of no cap space.

Makes it an easy answer for me, Oilers have it worst.

There are many teams on there ahead of the Leafs. They are a cap team but they have all of their major players signed now (Marner is coming and lots of space for him) and those other teams are way worse and need to get way better. Leafs are at worst 1 player away from being potentially league favorites (another top pair RD).

Edmonton. We're pretty much capped out and the team is ****.

Yeah. It's gotta be the Oilers here. They're locked in to pretty much what they have, with no real flexibility to make significant changes or improvements to a team that wasn't anywhere near good enough last year. Pretty disastrous. :dunno:

Ranger's arent even close to 90M...what is this garbage you posted?

NY Rangers are at $73.5 million now. That number does not include unsigned RFA's. Trouba, Buchnevich, DeAngelo and Lemieux will cost about $16.5 million. It also does not include Kravstov or Kakko (about $1.8 million). Nor does it include demotions to AHL, which will save (depending on who doesn't make team) about $2.1 million.

73.5 + 16.5 + 1.8 - 2.1 = pretty darn close to 90 million

Oilers. Not only are we a cap team, we aren't good and most of the garbage contracts that have us hamstrung are with us long term and untradeable. It's going to impact our ability to sign Nurse and Nuge while still keeping the rest of the core intact. To add to this, we're going to be very reliant on our prospects performing well on ELCs or continue sucking. Too much sucking and we might not see McDavid or Drai finish their contracts with the Oil. Going to be a challenging few years for the fanbase and management team, thanks Chia!

Oilers / Knights for me.

Oilers because they have no cap space, have albatross contracts like Lucic, and have buyouts on the books for multiple years (Sekera)

Knights because they are so tight to the cap / over it, that they can't do anything and are only at 40 contracts / 20 roster players

No idea how the Leafs are in second place here though. We have 11M in cap and only Marner to sign. Our cap is tight but that is because we have too many good players, not because of bad contracts. Now that Marleau, Zaitsev and Brown have been moved out we are in pretty good shape.

What the hell , canucks bruins and rangers are not even in the top ten for fewest cap space right now. Do some research before posting this garbage.

Lawrence, I am assuming you are looking at the landing page for Cap Friendly, or some similar website? Those are great resources for the casual observer, but can be misleading.

Often, their figures do not account for things such as RFAs (Restricted Free Agents) and roster adjustments later in the off-season (ie, guys getting shipped to AHL). They also use a simplified approach on LTIR, that makes it difficult (especially for teams close to that cap line).

Vancouver is in ok shape
Current cap hit: $74 million
Projected RFAs: + $12 million (Boeser + a few others)
Roster Adjustments: - $4-7 million (probably on higher end, have 25 guys on roster)

NY Rangers are in bad shape
Current Cap Hit: $73 million
Projected RFA’s: $16 million (Trouba, Buchnevich, a couple others)
Roster Adjustments: -$2-3 million (adding Kakko, Kravstov, dropping a few others)

Boston will be close
Current Cap Hit: $71 million
Projected RFA’s: $13 million (McAvoy, Carlo, Heinen)
Roster Adjustments: -$2-4 million

Oilers aren't in a great situation but have all our top guys locked up. Also quite a bit of cap coming off the books next year.

It has to be Vegas. They are at the cap at the moment. I know they have the Clarkson space but still don't have a 6th defender signed and a back up. Also there is the gusev question mark.
