We’re into November and the final quarter of the college football season is underway this week. That is, if you’re so desperate for some MACtion. Anyone who is watching 1-7 Kent State play 1-7 Akron (-4), please seek out therapy.
Newly minted by the College Football Playoff Committee as the #1 team, THE Ohio State is on the road in the football Mecca of Piscataway, NJ at noon on CBS, playing Rutgers who are *checks notes* … *double checks notes* 6-2?? The line is OSU -18.5, as Rutgers best win is probably over what is now a 4-4 Virginia Tech, and have no wins over a team with a winning record.
Big Noon is in Austin for a top 25 matchup between #23 Kansas State, always dangerous, and #7 Texas. Gus and Joel are on the call as this is also Fox’s feature game of the week. With Quinn Ewers still out, so Maalik Murphy is at the controls again this week, while Sark looks for a rhythm to develop so he can disrupt it by inserting Arch Manning and hope he doesn't transfer. Longhorns are on upset alert only favored by 4.
Jimbo Fisher would love to find a good win to keep the boosters at Texas A&M happy. His latest opportunity is a visit to Oxford to play #10 Ole Miss on ESPN at noon.
Dabo Swinney is in the same situation, he's been a bit ornery since fans are asking questions while refuses to look into the transfer portal. Perhaps a win vs. #15 Notre Dame will quiet some people. The spread is only 3 points
CBS has their big week this week, with a triple header, and their middle game sees #2 Georgia hosting a team that's the biggest overacheiver in the land this year, #12 Missouri. Last year in Columbia, Georgia had to rescue the game late 26-22, so a reality check is definitely in order. When the first CFP rankings came out last year, and Georgia saw themselves at #3, they took it to a high powered #1 Tennessee by only giving up 13 points, and re-asserting themselves as the #1 spot which they never lost. This year they're favored by 15.5.
We've got one of the biggest in-state rivalries this week, not sure why it's not at the end of the regular season, but we've got the final Bedlam Game before #9 Oklahoma and #22 Oklahoma State go their separate ways. OU lost to Kansas last week, a team Oklahoma State beat a few weeks ago in the run up to getting ranked. ABC has this one at 3:30, and there are no current plans to continue the rivalry, so who knows when these two meet up again.
Fox's B+ game this week at 3:30 sees #11 Penn State cross another state border to play 5-3 Maryland down in College Park. Maryland was looking good a few weeks ago, they lost to Ohio State but played them better than that score indicated. However, they have since lost to Illinois and Northwestern. Penn State also struggled last week following their loss to Ohio State, but did still beat a game Indiana team at home. Penn State is 8.5-point favorites and will definitely count on their defense once again since Maryland can score.
In other Big Ten afternoon action, the over/under for Iowa @ Northwestern is 30.5.
We've got a loaded prime time slate as well, first up at 7pm on ESPN, usually reserved for ESPN's SEC feature, instead will be a Big 12 matchup, #21 Kansas go on the road as slight underdogs in Iowa State. Cyclones are a bit hot after they lost that 10-7 game to Ohio University.
#3 Michigan was also bumped down by Ohio State, they will get a 2-6 Purdue team on NBC, and I'm sure that's all anyone will have to say about that.
Huge matchup in the Pac 12, as we're going to see every week really, and perhaps the most compelling matchup of the day. #5 Washington had that huge win vs. Oregon three weeks ago, but since they only managed a 15-7 win at home to Arizona State, and then their defense had an off-day giving up 33 at Stanford, which is almost as much as Colorado gave up to them in regulation. They are still undefeated, but are headed to the Coliseum to play #20 USC. Washington are 3-point favorites, but ESPN analytics likes USC. Big time quarterback matchup as tends to be the norm in the Pac 12 end game. Michael Penix may still be the Heisman front runner, but Caleb Williams is a defending Heisman winner. USC are nearly losers of 3 in a row as a 50-49 win over Cal last week ended with a failed two-point conversion to perserve the win. The over/under is 76.5!! We are sure to see some fireworks on ABC.
Game Day is on the scene for CBS's final SEC night game, and it's also one of the biggest rivalries in the country. #14 LSU comes to Tuscaloosa to play #8 Alabama, and it's going to be the second year in a row that LSU looks to kill off Alabama's playoff hopes for good. Last year was an overtime thriller that LSU won 32-31, which ended up being their national championship even though they ended up in the SECCG because they then play like shit against Arkansas and then lost to Texas A&M and Georgia. I guess Georgia/Ole Miss didn't appeal to CBS to make that the annual night game next week.
Two more for Pac 12 After Dark, at 10pm on ESPN, #16 Oregon State is coming off a loss to Arizona, so they're not going to overlook Coach Prime. Colorado hosts the Beavs, as Oregon State wants to keep their hope alive for the Pac 12 Championship Game, as they'll get to play both Washington and Oregon to end the season. Colorado played valiantly last week at UCLA, but they need to find 2 wins. Beavs are -13.5
Meanwhile, down in Tuscon, #19 UCLA plays the same Arizona team, and it's the same line Arizona saw last week in their upset in, it's Arizona +3 again. Arizona needs 1 win to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2017. Did you know that Arizona once played in a New Year's Six Bowl? It's true.
