Was Scott Stevens a dirty hitter

The difference between Yzerman and Crosby is that Yzerman was a much more classy player at the other aspects of the game.

How quickly people forget the Steve "Cryzerman" nickname, and reputation Yzerman had in his early career.

Like how? Like the time he gave all of the Boston Garden the middle finger after a series of cheap shots? Or maybe the time he attacked a fan in the Garden?

Classy guy - Then your classy guy, re-starts a fight that ends up with Jeff Lazaro never being right again, pretty much his career was finished. The crowd is yelling "Steve Yzerman *#^#" because everyone saw Mr Classy start some unnecessary nonsense, Game was over, the Red Wings should have gone home but Mr Classy..... [Mod Edit]

The first part of his career, Mr Classy did not have a great reputation, it wasn't til later that he became a leader.

Oh, seems someone else is sore now. Maybe Lazaro shouldnt have gone after and pounded Konstantinov then? Bruins played cheapshot hockey so that probably the reason Yzerman did things in the garden to you guys. :naughty: [Mod Edit]

He didn't do anything in this video??? Seems pretty clear to me that both sides were yapping then Probert jumped the guy.

Doesn't seem like quite what you were looking for, but here's one article about it:

http://hockeyjournal.com/news/pros/nhl/LaFontaine_striving_to_end_hockey-s_concussion_epidemic

That's a pretty incredible story. While specialist neurologists understood the severity of concussions, team doctors seemed to have been completely ignorant.

Yep, that's the one.

And yeah, you're right about Marchment. Kasparaitis or Stevens should not be mentioned in the same breath.

I have no recollection of Kasparaitis throwing elbows. I do remember him giving glove shots to the helmet of guys who went to the net, but even soft stay at home D did that in that era. I sometimes saw that from Peter Popovic of all people.

The fight first; Lazaro was a skilled player not a goon, and he was a rookie. The game was different then, it was a line brawl which was more common back then, for all we know Konstantinov needed a pounding. [Mod Edit]

No, not sore, but it seems some of our younger fans forget, Yzerman's earlier career was marked with incidents. He was as whiny as Crosby is now with the refs and did do some over the top stuff that would have gotten 20 pages of rage about what a punk he was over on the main board but I digress.... Supposedly, Yzerman whacked the fan with his stick but in a plea bargain deal with the DA, the fan retracted that statement. Who knows what happened, the film is grainy. But a classy player would not have engaged with a fan, Yzerman did. Seasons earlier, your classy Yzerman, skated off the rink and gave the fans the finger, that was prior to the video. Tell me, is giving the fans the finger classy?

The rest of the stuff you wrote about the made up word "unclassiest" is nonsense, I can let it slide. Sorry, your hero, was not the good boy you think he was..... Yes, I know only the Bruins and Flyers play cheap shot hockey. :sarcasm: Except for the times when other teams did/do.

Except that he left the bench area to engage the Bruins getting off the ice which re-started the entire thing. Nevermind, it was against the rules for the visiting team to leave the bench area while the home team left the ice. Let's see. Yzerman -reignites the fight and of course, Bob Probert comes rushing to his defense which meant clobbering Lazaro from behind. It was Probert's job to protect Yzerman, I don't blame Probert.

I read the outrage when Shawn Thornton did something similar to Letang this past season. If the Yzerman and Probert incident happened today, there would 50 pages of rage and disgust on this site. Don't minimize how involved Yzerman was that started that entire fight that left an up and coming player on the ice with his brain scrambled. Lazaro's career suffered after that, and it never would have happened if Yzerman didn't go skating down with his gums yapping at the Bruins.

Kasparaitis was a cheap player; I don't know how to enbed videos but here you go.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoJqaswC7vw

Here's one that he gets his forearms and fists into the player's face. If you don't like Stevens's type of hits, this one should make you upset.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ytob9h7ukk

Kasparaitis was known for alot of dirty things he did, grabbing, stick work, elbows, cross checking, and anything he could to annoy his opponent usually star players. He got Messier to drop the gloves after years of not dropping them for example.

How is it cheap to go after a player who just crossed checked you in the back and bit from the boards?

And that hit is clean. Shoulder to the face with an elbow follow through just like your man. :naughty:

Yapping at a player is now dirty? Oh lawdy lawd.

Lazaro was a dirty puke himself. The same game or the game before he tried to take out Fedorovs knees so yea, the wings were probably a bit upset with him.

and here is your classy bruins fan

"Steve Yzerman did not have a stick," Colletti said. "I got punched. I don't know where the punch came from. I don't really know what happened. He came walking over toward me, so I swung at him.

"I feel terrible about pinpointing Steve Yzerman. I think he's a fantastic hockey player. I think he's a great sportsman and a tribute to the game. The last thing hockey needs is bad press like this, and I'm sorry.

"I figured maybe if I said I got it from a player, I wouldn't have gotten charged. My only intent was to get the charges dropped. I feel so bad about it. I totally apologize for it. I totally regret it."

Oh and Yzerman wasnt suspended for any of this so he wasnt dirty according to your logic about Stevens :naughty:

Lazaro wasn't a dirty player but thanks for playing. By your logic Fedorov deserved it.

If you're seriously trying to say the Kasparaitis hit was the same as Stevens, boy we have a problem. Your dirty player lifted his arms straight into the face, very un-Stevens like.

maybe i should know better than to get into this, but the "recanting" quoted above by the bruins fan sounds extremely fishy to me. the wording sounds totally coerced. that's not to say that he is or is not lying, nor does it indicate what did or did not happen, or that yzerman did or did not provoke. just that the fan is being forced to say something that he doesn't want to say, probably as part of a plea bargain; from where i stand, not having been there and with no video evidence pointing one way or the other, all other facts are still in dispute. so i think taking that statement at face value is just seeing what you want to see. the newspaper link: http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...FlPAAAAIBAJ&sjid=QwMEAAAAIBAJ&pg=5211,1254918

but anyway, the one thing that nobody seems to dispute: lazaro is lying, possibly unconscious, on the ice at the end because brad mccrimmon had him in a choke hold during the melee.

everything else -- yzerman and the fan, who probert sucker punched before quintal stepped in, whether konstantinov gouged lazaro in the eye during their fight, who started what -- seems to be in dispute.

probert and quintal were both given 10 game suspensions, both of which were rescinded when the league received game tapes from each team which we don't have access to here.

Doesnt matter if you think it sounds fishy. He said he lied and thats pretty much it. There is no evidence of Yzerman hitting him with anything, the league didnt suspend him and I think we all can agree on that there were a investigation.

In the plea agreement he said that.....draw your own conclusion.

Still doesnt matter. There is no evidence of an incident ever occuring. I mean a few players, or people in the audience shouldve seen it right? Or someone from the league. No evidence, no suspension, retracted statement. Youve got nothing.

Yeah I dunno. 66 cross checked him face first into the boards. A couple high shots back, to me, aren't really cause to sound any sort of alarm.

Second hit, I don't know a thing about the rules in whatever league that was.
