New York Islanders traded Wendel Clark, Mathieu Schneider and D.J. Smith to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Darby Hendrickson, Sean Haggerty, Kenny Jonsson and 1st round selection (Roberto Luongo) in 1997.

The first Luongo trade gets all the press, but this was awful too.

(Roberto just doesn't bring a good return).

Underating fleecing by Ottawa unloading Daigle (and his signifcant contract) on the Flyers for a young Vaclav Prospal. Prospal had a good but short stay in Ottawa and Ottawa let go of him too early but it was a great deal to get rid of Daigle and get a 50 point forward.

There were others in the trade as well I think? Was it Falloon and Prospal for Daigle?

The Pens got Joey Mullen from the Flames for a pick (a 2nd I believe) when the Flames believed Mullen was over the hill. Of course Mullen would go on to have many productive seasons still. A horrible move for the Flames, and one that doesn't get the attention it merits.

Agree with Christer Olsson to Ottawa for Pavol Demitra to St. Louis

Alexei Kovalev to Montreal for Jozef Balej and a 2nd to the Rangers.

The rights to Ken Dryden from Boston for two minor league scrubs. If the Bruins hold on to Dryden they likely win at least 2 more cups.
Actually one of the scrubs (Paul Reid) did not even make it to minor pro - he topped out at junior and the other (Guy Allen) played a few years of minor pro with no NHL games.

That is always my pick as the most one-sided trade in NHL history.

How so? They didn't need Ramage to win the Cup. McInnis and Suter were the core of the D.

The feeling at the time was that the Flames needed more experience on the blueline, and Ramage provided that. He was a pretty valuable d-man for them in the 89 cup run, considering Suter only played 5 games. The Flames had Loob, Mullen and a young Fleury on the right side, who at the time were all far better than Hull, but their defensive depth, particularly experience was lacking. The Blues did amazingly well on that trade, but considering that Suter was injured for most of the 89 playoff run and Ramage stepped up his play in 89, getting 12pts in 20 games, the same point pace Suter had (3pts in 5 games), it's safe to say Ramage was a very important cog in their run, and it's questionable whether the Flames could have beat either the Nucks or Habs without him.. Having Ramage on D was much more important than having Hull as a 4th line RW. Both teams benefitted from that trade. Calgary in the short term, the Blues in the long term

A couple from the Oilers

First: At the deadline in 97, Miro Satan to Buffalo for Barrie Moore and Craig Millar, a guy who routinely scored at least 30 and had over 60 points for 2 stiffs.

Second: This one is in the Oilers favor, Jimmy Carson to the Wings for Adam Graves, Joe Murphy, Petr Klima and Jeff Sharples and cash. Graves, Murphy and Klima(triple OT goal in game one of the final) all played roles in the 90 cup run, I'm not really sure what happened with carson, a few years of 20+ goals but nothing close to the approximate 50 he put up in two of his earlier years with the Kings and Oilers.

Another fleecing the Oilers took was thanks to an arbitrater who awarded Troy Mallette to the Oilers for Adam Graves after the Rangers signed Graves as a restricted free agent.:shakehead Sather must have really been going for the moon for the arbitrater to pick Mallette(the Rangers offer) as the best compensation from the two submissions.

One could say 1998:

Trevor Linden (Vancouver) to the NY Islanders for Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe, and a First Rounder (Jarkko Ruutu).

McCabe gets traded to Chicago at the 1999 draft straight-up to get the 2nd Top-4 pick that eventually became one of the 2 Sedin twins.
Ruutu gets let go as a Free Agent this past summer.
Bertuzzi is used as part of the trade to get Roberto Luongo.

As mediocre as Schneider was for the leafs, concidering five or so goog season since then, it could have been a very solid trade. Clark also had a few decent years left in him. This is a perfect example of why trading next years first is a bad idea.

It was a 3rd rounder we got, and used on Ruutu.

Rangers traded Mike Ridley to Washington Bobby Carpenter.

Rangers traded Zdeno Ciger to Tampa Bay for Matthew Barnaby

Rangers traded Louie DeBrusk, Bernie Nicholls and Steven Rice to Edmonton for Mark Messier and future considerations (which turned out to be Jeff Beukeboom for David Shaw).

1. The 96 Deadline Disaster. Ferraro, Lafayette, Norstrom, and Steve Larouche for McSorley, Kurri, and Churla. Killed any momentum we had as a team, and killed us in the playoffs. All 4 of those players we got were USELESS for us. Ferraro went on to have some good seasons elsewhere, and Norstrom became one of the league's best stay at home defenders. We got KILLED in this trade in hindsight.

This is the worst Neil Smith trade of all time. The players he traded for were useless yet he still made a huge move for them.

Sabres have made some good ones. People have already mentioned
1. Gratton for Briere (one of the best deals of all time)
2. Grosek for Gilmout and J.P. Dumont
3. Two bags of pucks for Satan

I'll add a few more:

4. Stephane Beauregard and a 1993 4th round draft pick to Chicago (Eric Daze) for Dominik Hasek
5. 3rd rounder for Toni Lydman
6. Matthew Barnaby for Stu Barnes.

Here's a more obscure one that's starting to pay big dividends:
7. Yuri Khmylev and a 1996 8th round pick (Andrei Podkonicky) to St. Louis for Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre and a 1996 2nd round draft pick (Cory Sarich) and a 1997 3rd round pick (Maxim Afinogenov)

Glen Wesley to Hartford for 3 1st round picks (9th overall 95: Kyle McLaren, 8th overall 96: Jon Aitken, 8th overall 97: Sergei Samsonov)

Glen Wesley, of course, being the product of the 1st round pick Boston got in the Neely trade (#3 overall). The trade that kept on giving.

Craig Janney and Stephane Quintal for Adam Oates

Jeff Jillson for Brad Boyes

Stuart, Sturm, and Primeau for Joe Thornton (a steal for San Jose, obviously)

Glen Wesley to Hartford for 3 1st round picks (9th overall 95: Kyle McLaren, 8th overall 96: Jon Aitken, 8th overall 97: Sergei Samsonov)

I'm curious as to how you consider that deal a fleece. Glen Wesley has played 11 season with the Hartford/Carolina franchise and averaged about 20 minutes per night for the majority of those. There was a stretch of time when he was considered one of the top shut down defensemen in the league. Just because the point totals weren't really there doesn't mean he didn't perform at a high level. Plus, it culminated last year in Glen Wesley being a HUGE part of the reason that Carolina was able to win a Stanley Cup this past season. His leadership down the stretch was invaluable to this team.

Plus, none of those players are currently Boston property anymore. Kyle McLaren played a few decent season for Boston. Aitken busted out. Samsonov left for very little in return.
