Just a clarification, if we trade for and sign Trouba, the cap penalty for not signing him before the season start would -- NOT -- give him a higher cap hit for us than the avg AAV for his contract. Like let's say he get 5.5m per for 5 years, his cap hit for us would not be higher than 5.5m. It would be 5.5m, but not less which it normally would be.

Let's say we sign him 60 days into the season and that the season is 180 days (is this the right number?), the cap hit for us would normally only be 120/180 x 5.5m. In other words, normally you can save cap space by signing a RFA late. To prevent teams taking advantage of this by making a habit of always signing RFAs late, there is a mechanism that some call a penalty meant to take away the gain you can make. But while McKenzies math is confusing, it is clear that the penalty only takes away the savings, IE it does not litterary punish a team. The result is just as if the contract had been signed and been on the roster, and hence against the cap, all season.

Just wanted to point this out since there were some misunderstandings in the old thread.

Pretty sure it would be the same as the Lindholm situation? Or is that only if Jets sign him?

If it's the same then the cap hit would be higher in year 1 as a penalty.

It's the same as with Lindholm.

What Ola is saying is that the proration of the cap hit is eliminated.

For simplicity sake, let's say the cap hit is 1 mil and there are 100 days in the season. Normally, that would be $10,000 a day. Let's say 20 days pass before the player signs. That means there are 80 days left at $10,000 a day, which is only an 800k cap hit.

The rule is forcing the cap hit to be 1 mil, but because there is less time to accumulate that amount, the cap hit is actually higher. So it would be $12,500 per day for 80 days, which is a total of 1 mil. Converted to a full year, the cap hit would be 1.25 mil.

I think that's how it's working.

they don't pro-rate the cap hit by # games played or on the roster? i.e. I thought it would less so say you miss 20% of the season and sign for $5M, you would have a cap hit that year of $4M. Same as how the cap is calculated on a player acquired via trade. AAV certain doesn't change but not sure why it would go up since salary is based off of games and not a season (right?)

It's calculated daily. At the end of the season anything "over" becomes a penalty for the next year. So each day you are on the roster you accumulate 1/180th of your cap hit.

Cap hit is based on # of days on the roster, not # of games.

If we trade for a player, that player's cap hit is prorated for us as normal, but the rest of the cap was already paid by his old team. This is a special case for RFAs signed after the season starts to avoid any shenanigans I guess.

Any trade we make PLEASE include Fast in it.

This guy is so bad and overrated by the coach. He should not be sniffing a top 9 spot on any NHL team yet AV gives him all the ice time in the world. And he isn't even that special defensively either.

he's a good fourth liner for a million bucks. It's the coach's fault he is on third line over pirri.

this team needs a RD badly. miller+skjei should return an excellent 1

Yes you are right...BUT AV will never use him in that role. We will always have one injury at least and Fast is always going to be the man to move up when he shouldnt.

That is why he needs to be traded. Because AV is a moron.

Can we even trust AV to use a new RHD correctly?

Benching Clendening for "not being efficient with his touches" yet continuing to trot the likes of Holden, Girardi and Staal out there give me no confidence that he will.

Staal has been okay, especially compared to Holden. Even Girardi has been decent, serviceable at least.

Holden is by far the worst defenseman on the team. Clendening was inefficient with his touches? Okay AV, well after the way Holden has looked in 8 games now, why is he playing?

I can't believe they gave up a 4th round pick for this scrub.

I vote no, and I vote to include Fast's name in the thread title instead.

Thanks, I should delete my post and just quote yours instead.

In essence, we don't get a penalty, the result is that we don't get a bargain like we would if we traded for or signed a player after the season started.

Remember also that there is a cumulative effect to this. Like lets say a team has 2m of cap space and had a RFA to sign, that it will take 1m to sign.

If they made the negotiation drag out 30 days into the season (the season being 160 days), that is 1/8. On the 31 day of the season, they would have 2,285,000 of accrued cap space, i.e. be able to take on a player with a cap hit of 2,285,000, and the cap hit of the contract -- without this mechanism -- would be 150/180 x 1m = 830k.

So it could definitely be exploited. With this mechanism, for the avoidance of doubt, you still accrue cap space but the cap hit of the RFA signed is 1m not 830k.
