If a team knows they're not re-signing a player they can grant that player permission to speak with other teams.

Edit to add: They obviously can't sign with the other team until free agency unless both teams want to do the transfer paperwork for a "future considerations" trade.

It'd be pretty funny if Vegas traded Stastny tomorrow to us and then Columbus trades us Savard and swoops in and takes Pietrangelo out from under Vegas.
I think they're more likely to be going after Hall, but with all the defensemen they're moving out who can really say?
