As a New Yorker, it's outrageous to think I could root for the Devils over the Rangers but I'm leaning in that direction. The Devils during their championship years were awful to watch and just so cheezy with their trap style of play. Yet, right now, I can't stand the Rags mainly due to Fox and his bitch boy demand to play for his hometown team over the Canes. That and others who demand to play for the Rags. F*ck 'em I say.

I don't talk shit about the Devils. We don't trap teams in the same way that they did, but a lot of their extremely defensively responsible roster makeup are IMO huge influences in the way that the Canes build their roster today.

You can choose to be patient and always be a contender, ala the GB Packers who typically don't go out and spend big in Free Agency.
But, for Carolina, Aho and Pesce are due up in 2024.
I think it's fair to say you can be patient and always a contender. The NFL is such a different animal though because a star QB has such an impact on the game. the GB Packers have been blessed with 2 franchise QBs over a 30 year stretch, which has allowed them to remain competitive and a contender. For their SB under Favre, they did hit Free Agency pretty hard. Reggie White, Santana Dotson, Andre Rison, Keith Jackson, Desmond Howard, etc.. the 2nd SB, not so much as IIRC, the only major free agent was Charles Woodson.

There is a similarity to the NFL though in that you need to make sure you keep your best/core players and not overpay for other good players, thus the rest of your post is relevant in that light, particularly as it relates to Aho and getting him re-signed.

But, for Carolina, Aho and Pesce are due up in 2024. They can begin negotiations and sign this summer. But, Pasta got $11.25 and MacKinnon got $12.6 mill on their extensions. If Aho lands somewhere in between because he's a C, that's a $3 mill increase over his current deal and unlike going from ELC to your RFA deal, there's unlikely to be a significant bump in production when he turns 27. That's not old, but he made the NHL at 19, vs someone at 23. I don't foresee his production jumping up 25% moving forward. You're going to be paying more for the same production you have now. Same with Pesce. So, that's probably a $4-$5 mill increase against their combined cap of $12.5 mill to something in the $16.5 to $17.5 mill range.
So, that's going to eat up the projected bump of $4 mill or whatever in the cap. Seeing Wash and Pitt slide out of the contender status as Sid and Ovy age, but they will get replaced by other teams like NJ, Det, Buf, and whomever else is able to build a team. Always going to be competition to win. Like the NFL right now in the AFC who have the majority of the top QBs in the league. Just the way it goes. Maybe being patient works out, but maybe giving your current roster a shot could have worked out.

As much as I like Aho, I see him in a tier just below those two and position notwithstanding will be shocked if his contract lands between the two.

Thinking about it, what they're doing is basically a mirror of Tampa under Yzerman. Tons of picks. On the trade front, he was very conservative early. Coburn (rental+1) was the big add in 2015. He completely sat out the 2016 deadline. He sold in an off year 2017. In year 5 of the competitive window, he converted prospect depth into McDonagh+Miller; the Canes tried to do that at the same point with Meier.

Hopefully there's Brayden Point-type impact somewhere in those 40 picks!

Heck, you just need ONE Point to be mission-accomplished. Add that with a Cirelli and a Cernak (via trade but was basically a Tampa prospect) and you're on your way to Tampa-type glory.

The entire top line for Tampa was benched during the whole 3rd period today at Buffalo. Sadly, they will just be that more rested for tomorrow.
Im really surprised Tampa didn’t play the odds of getting two by playing Vas against Buffalo

Dallas is dominating Colorado. Roope Hintz is such a great player. He and Aho are good friends, been roommates for years when they were younger (per interview with Aho). He's in Dallas long term though so 0% chance he'd ever be available.

I know as a Devils fan our fanbases don't see eye to eye but I'm not quite sure why you guys are getting trolled by other fanbases on the main board. I liked your guys's moves in Poolparty/Ghost. FWIW, I think a lot of people are overrating the Rangers and missed what exactly happened in that second round series last year for them to win. Hopefully we can meet round 2 after one of us dispatches the Rags in 5. :thumbu:

We troll ourselves enough to not worry about the main board.

I'm sorry, from now on, please refer to me as "the professor" and give me the respect I deserve.

I'm even married to a real life Mary Ann

Fair enough Professor, it’s clear that we’re both very important and stately gentlemen and that people should listen to us, and certainly never, ever talk back.
