I was always going to be that expensive to clear that contract. Good move by Carolina and Toronto now has the cap space to bring most of their guys back (although filling out the roster might be tough).

Damn, I hate that we had to give up the first. Next year’s draft will be one for the ages, where the prospects we’d be looking at around 25-31 are of the quality you’d see at 10-15 in many drafts

As was always the case and stated several times, gms are looking to improve their own teams. Not screw over the leafs.
Carolina gets a pick in the 20's and the leafs salary issues are essentially solved.
Both teams win and hf boards commiserate
To be fair the return was not posted when I said that. But yeah I change my attitude back to my original stance. the leafs are gonna have to pay to get out of cap hell. Dubas is doing what he has too though.

Nice deal for the Canes, surprised ownership ok'd this spending but I guess that's what a playoff run will do for you.

Tough price to pay for Toronto but a necessary one. IIRC Dubas' philosophy is that it's better to have a bunch of picks rather than higher picks, so I'm not surprised he was willing to move the first rounder.

Eh, I think most teams would be happy to pay $4 million for a 1st rounder. The Canes owner is like stupidly rich too.

Good move by Carolina if they get Toronto's 2020 1st out of it, for a 6th rounder and a buyout.

Helps Leafs cap situation, but they give up a 1st without improving their team.

Cant believe it cost a 1st. Madness. Leafs without a 1st this year and next year. They're soon going to approach Calgary level mediocrity.

Leafs were desperate and Carolina took advantage. The cap relief will help the leafs but to give up a 1st for a guy in Marleau that’s expiring after this year is crazy. It will help them short term but it’s starting to cost them assets.

I guess the thought process is they rather keep their guys than the picks who are unknown.

Good job by Carolina
