This feels like karma after Toronto fans were laughing just a day or two ago over X rumors regarding Justin Holl.

Is this the first trade where a player's salary has been retained below the league minimum?

I think it sets an interesting precedent. Retaining 50% on a guy making league minimum for a couple seasons would mean a team gets a player at a cap hit less than 400k

Seems like a tidy bit of work by Treliving here.

Leafs were desparate for a right-shot defenceman.

Lyubushkin fit well with Rielly in the past, but doesn't really "prevent" the Leafs from making a bigger move, should one materialize.

They could go into the playoffs with the following:
Rielly-Lyubushkin
Brodie-Liljegren
Benoit-McCabe
Giordano-Timmins

But could also be very content bumping Benoit out, McCabe on his natural side, and a better partner for Rielly.

Plan A is probably a Liljegren upgrade (Liljegren + 1st for RHD)

Rielly RHD
Brodie Lyubushkin
Benoit-McCabe

or

Rielly RHD
Brodie RHD
McCabe Lyubushkin

Very high price to pay for a #7 defenseman who's like 1% WAR or something and who has 4 points this season. Okay, it was for retainment but I feel like you could have just signed a random guy from AHL for league min for free and he would have done just as well.

Benoit has been solid and imo Lyubushkin is a downgrade on him. That's why I think this trade is useless, just doesn't move the needle and they should have gone bigger or just went with a waiver fodder RD for a while until they get healthier

Already out with a possible concussion. This trade was reeking of desperation to start off with. This just makes it worse for Toronto.

"Desperation trade" is the new buzz word around here.

Treliving is only about 6 months into his job, and bitter fans of his former team are saying that he's desperate. Why would he be desperate? He's not getting fired any time soon.

Nothing screams desperate like moving a mid round pick in exchange for a decent depth D.

Ya'll leafs haters are relentless.

First of all, it was a dirty hit.
Second of all, he was actually playing amazing with Rielly before he got injured

This has all the makings of a another Simon Benoit

No desperation

That’s just his normal style

Bleeding picks for garbage and 1st round exits

Rinse and repeat
