It's usually easy to figure out everybody's primary rooting interest, but I'm curious about people's favourite tennis players beyond their major allegiance (s). Women's side, too, if you want.

Men

1) (tie) Federer/Nadal
2) Djokovic (he earned it the hard way)
3) Gulbis (for good or ill, one of a kind)
4) Fognini (kind of crazy, nice game when he is on)
5) Monfils (just so much fun to watch)

HM: Gilles Simon, Nick Kyrgios (up and comer), Andy Murray

Women

1) Sharapova
That's about it these days on the women's side. Madison Keys is a potential up and comer.

Bouchard has fallen out of favor with me. I'll cheer for her again when she displays some dedication to tennis. Good thread idea, btw!

Active is tough, but I'll give it a shot.

Men:

1) Federer
2) Nishikori (he's about my size, so I'm enjoying his success)

The two above are well ahead of my other rooting interests.

3) Dimitrov
4) Wawrinka
5) Djokovic

Would have had Murray in the mix at some point; I'm Scottish-born, so there was always a desire to see him win Wimbledon over an Englishman. Once he did it, I cared a lot less about watching him play.

I cheer on Milos, too, but he has a lot to improve before I can start enjoying his matches.

Women:

1) Ivanovic
2) Wozniacki
3) Halep

Genie's run last year was a treat to watch, but she's been insufferable since.

I was trying to compile my top five when I realized three of them aren't playing anymore, and then I got a bit sad (Söderling, Roddick, Safin).

Can I get away with choosing Haas as active? In other news, Söderling has announced a comeback try in 2016 :) He's on record saying he saw himself playing into his late thirties when active, health willing this should be fun. I'm of the firm opinion he was on the cusp of winning a grand slam when he had to retire in 2011, he was getting better and better for every tournament. His last match in Båstad was a complete demolition job of Ferrer. Even if not, he was that X-factor, top seeds hated drawing him since he could pull off that insane upset any given day.

EDIT:

I'll do my female top five, in no particular order:

1. Halep
2. Ivanovic
3. Petkovic
4. Lisicki
5. Piter

I'm revising mine:

1) Federer/Nadal
3) Zverev
4) Kygios
5) Gulbis--the giant condor forehand is gone, replaced by a topspin number, but now he doesn't know what to do with his left hand so it just sort of dangles at his side.

If I had to pick between Roger and Rafa, it would be Roger by a 1/32 of an inch, but it is really too close to call.

Female Top Five

Sharapova
Kuznetsova
Kontaveit
Mladenovic
Ostapenko--with a bullet--definitely on the rise

I'm a really casual fan but I love Nadal. The ferocity of his play combined with his ingenuous demeanor makes him an attractive mix. One of my desires is to start watching tennis more regularly. His uptick in form is as good of an invitation as any.

Boo. Ugh. Tennis shouldn't force your eardrums to explode.

And no Monfils? Shame! :P

I'm still getting to know a lot of the emerging young players on tour and that's why most of my favorites have been around for a while.

Actually the guy I should have put on my list is Dustin Brown. He's pretty consistently entertaining, win or lose. Then Gael, then Fog, so Monfils is still easily in the top eight.

1) Wawrinka is my top. I love his attitude and I love his 1hbh. I play a 1hbh and I just love his.

2) Djok is the most likable guy on tour. The guy went from a jerk early on to really figuring out his life and how to be likable.

3) Gasquet - while I do not like him personally, his game is beautiful. Almost art.

4) Ferrer for his heart

5) Tsonga

HM: Thiem and Kohlschrieber
