Tough to call it officially done for such an iconic player but this is probably the best for both parties. No reason to sit him in the press box so it's better to just let him go home. A true class act and a reliable top 6 C in an era when the Habs were struggling badly to find another one.

You know...
The Plekanec era is sort of when I became as big of a habs fan as I still am today. Sad to see the guy go but it's best for both parties and the guy got his 1000th! RIP Turtlenecks

They pretty much made him waste his time, like Mark Streit last year.
Signing him to finish out his career with the Habs and allowing him to play his 1,000th game before retirement isn't "wasting his time". This was likely the plan when when he signed back with the Habs.

Why buy him out?

On capfriendly faq site it says this about 35+ contracts:

«On a related note, over the previous couple years there has been significant confusion as to whether a buyout does or does not receive a cap benefit for 35-plus contract. The most recent understanding is that bought out 35-plus contracts do not receive a cap hit benefit, as is explained by Michael Russo. More details on this are available at the Buyout FAQ»
Saves money even if the caphit stays

Will Plecs turtleneck be inducted to the hall of fame?

Will they raise the turtleneck in Bell center next to Robinsons jersey?

Respectable nhl career , 1000 games, nothing but hard 4th and third line shut down minutes on horizon.... time to go spend some of that money. Don’t blame him

Bergevin has made many mistakes (no surprise here) regarding his bottom-six lines. Signing Plekanec and Peca were useless signings. Putting De Larose on waivers and losing him for nothing was another one.

Nope. There was a $1.25m performance bonus in his contract though. Unless it was something ridiculously trivial we have to assume he didn't earn it.

Ok, cap friendly states 1.25 signing bonus. Would have been strange if this was the plan at signing.
