The guy is an absolute monster on the forecheck. So many of the goals from the top line are created because he is relentless. I know he hasn't gotten the points, but like NBTW said, he will go a run soon.

T.J. Oshie

Hey, what's the talk over there about Oshie? Is everyone happy with him there? Was that trade deemed a success from a Caps point of view and are the Caps planning on resigning him? Or is there a chance they're going to let him walk?

We're happy with Oshie, the trade is a success since Oshie is a clear improvement over Brouwer. We'd like to sign him again, unfortunately he'll probably get a lot more than we can afford to pay him on the open market.

Also, I'm concerned about Oshie's skating abilities. Needless to say, he's not a very good skater. Blues fans know it, Oshie tripped over the red line yet again on the OT goal against the Hawks yesterday. The game is becoming faster each year, I'm worried that Oshie might not be able to keep up with the pace of the league in 4-5 years. He'll be close to 35 years old, and I wouldn't want to be stuck with a 3rd line winger making north of $5M.

The Caps' window of contention is very narrow, I'd only be open to a short term deal. I'm not sure his needs match ours.

I was just watching some clips of games on Gamecenter and sure enough, I just saw that OT goal you were talking about where Oshie tripped over himself. It actually worked out as he tripped up the Hawks player and a 2 on 1 developed for the Caps. For some reason Oshie has always had trouble staying on his skates as he had that trouble here in STL too. Still a young guy in his prime, if the Caps can resign him at 5.5M, then I think it would be worth it. Thing is though he'll probably want a contract like Okposo's. Go look at Okposo's lifetime games, goals, points and they're incredibly/practically identical to Oshie's. So it'll be interesting where this goes.

2-3 years? Definitely.

4-5 years? Ehhh... depends on the salary.

6-8 years? Bye.

I wouldn't go above 6m AAV either. Possibly slightly if it's 2-4 years and no NMC/NTC.

Propably around 50-50 whether he'll stay or not.

I think 6M x 3Y is the most we can spend rationally. If GMBM is in desperate mood somehow...

The UFA market is shallow. This is going against Caps.

There is not much difference between 5,5M and 6M for Caps if we are talking about next 3 years. Beyond that we are a bit doomed (popular opinion here) and we are surely in need of good RW.

Wilson isn't good enough, Williams is old and not inspiring. Letting Oshie go will be tough. Lose-lose situation kinda. I believe we should lose with Oshie. Cap hell is clearable in theory, some teams did it. Getting bad player on the market is worse than having overpaid Oshie 3 years down the road.

If the Caps decide to keep Oshie, they're going to have to commit to him as a core player. His contract will likely look similar to the ones that guys like Eriksson and Ladd signed this past off-season. My current guess is that he could get 6 or 7 years at $6M on the free agent market.

I'll be much more comfortable committing that type of term and money to Oshie if he shows he can carry a line of his own offensively. I don't want to spend that much on Ovechkin's 3rd wheel or a PP1 specialist.

Everybody has that one thing that fits so perfectly, whether it be a shirt, a pair of underwear, or those lucky socks. T.J. Oshie found his perfect fit in the city of Washington; playing for the Capitals.

Oshie joined the club prior to the 2015-2016 season. In that time, He’s become a fan-favourite. He’s amassed 107 points in 148 games. His two seasons have been his highest-scoring seasons of his career. This past season, he tied Alexander Ovechkin with the team-lead in goals with 33 (his personal best). Both seasons have been two of his best statistically.

Oshie is an unrestricted free agent and is due for a big raise. With all of the contracts the Capitals need to sign, re-signing T.J. Oshie is a necessity.

Did not know the player before he came to the Caps but I am and will continue be an Oshie fan wherever he decides to play. He and Backstrom do play well together.

5 years 30 million is the max I'd be willing to go, if we gotta give him more years or more dollars than goodbye. Unless we can trade Ovechkin and Orpik then I'd be OK to give him a few hundred thousand more a year or longer term, either way we can't lose him if the Caps finally trade Ovechkin. But chances are he'll get a better deal somewhere else anyways.

4x$4.5M or he can walk.

That is his last contract. You don't think he deserves a raise? He was 8th in goals per game. Scored the same number of goals as Malkin in about the same number of games.

If you are going to put that offer on the table, its best to just thank him and not offer a contract at all.

How to you gauge his willingness to stay here then? Everyone always says they want to stay, but uprooting the family may get old. He seemed rather emphatic and un-Winnik like in pronouncing he wanted to stay. That literally means discount to me.

I know its un-American and all, but not everyone is all about money. Alzner took a discount to sign his last contract. If we were afraid of insulting him, should we have not offered him a contract?

If they are leaving anyways, who cares about the insult factor. TJ knows we are facing a bit of cap hell and it can be sold that way.

Lets give Winnik a break. He knows there is no chance they offer him a contract. If Oshie signs elsewhere, it will be his second move and include lenthy term on a new deal.

We cant know how much he wants to stay. Many recent UFA's have said they wanted to stay and most if not all have left. Fedorov clearly wanted to stay. I think Ward wanted to stay.

At the same time many of the things Oshie may like about the Capitals may not apply anymore after this season.

If he wants to stay, I think he takes a little less money and a little less term. $6m rather than $6.5 and 6 years instead of 7 or something.

Facts are this is likely his last contract and he is going to take it seriously.

My view is that with yet another playoff failure and changes coming, that he leaves for a stable situation.

I think there is a good shot we resign Oshie. Although to some posters here who are money tight, that doesn't mean you blackball him either. I would go 5.5-5.75 And to twabby yes there could be a chance his production falls, but he might be the best RWer in the upcoming FA classes. Yes there is a chance his goal scoring could go down a little bit but add in the fact of everything he does very well, then he is worth every dollar. The only team I see pulling Oshie away from Washington is the Wild, but i think they might be in cap trouble.

So he should make less than Marcus Johansson?:amazed:

Caps need to do some cap/salary and roster management. MAJO had his best regular season of his career. Sell high. You have Ovechkin, Burakovsky and most likely Vrana playing the left side next season. Part of MAJO's salary can go towards resigning Oshie.

What do people realistically expect of Oshie next season?

He's not going to shoot 23% again, he's turning 31, and he plays a style that may lead to more injuries. Honestly I'm expecting him to be closer to 20 goals rather than 30 next season and I doubt he plays a full season. He was largely fine in the playoffs but he wasn't really a difference maker (not that many Capitals were). I'm just not sure why people are so willing to open the bank for him.

I'm not saying don't attempt to re-sign him because he's still a fine option in the top 6, but long-term big $$$ deals for players in their 30s are almost always disastrous after a year or two (or right away in many cases). You're paying for past performance in most cases rather than future production and that's the last thing the Capitals need.

Okay, so do the math. With your crystal ball, he's a 20-goal scorer like MoJo at $4.6m, but he's also a top-line guy in every even-strength situation (plays 5v5, 4v4, 3v3), a key performer on PP1, a standout penalty killer, one of your best forecheckers, a decent faceoff guy, doesn't take penalties despite playing a physical game, and is one of the best shootout players in the league.

This guy wears a lot of hats for your team, and he's due a raise even from your "all about goals" perspective. There's no reason he can't learn to curb his more rambunctious tendencies to protect himself better, and he's not a speed guy, so his game figures to age well otherwise.

If you don't think he's worth it, that's fine. Just be prepared for the holes his departure will leave all over the lineup.

Haha -- based on this comment alone, the odds of Oshie staying have increased tremendously, IMO.
