I agree. He is 2nd in the entire AHL for points...and he's a defenseman! His offensive ability is quite astounding. Throw him on the 4th line as a winger and give him powerplay time. It's an experiment worth looking into.

The big knock on it all is that foot speed. On the bright side the Marlies are so far ahead who cares what they do. I mean, what's the worst that can happen.

Positives:
- Point Machine 5v5 32 of 38 points
- Improves nearly any PP unit he plays on
- Very good shot

Negatives:
- Easily in the running for worst skater on the Marlies
- Probably the worst in his own zone of the 8 they consistently use

Can't see this guy ever being a consistent NHL'er. Although he has his niche and could easily play on a team's PP unit, his lack of footspeed and defensive zone play is terrible in the AHL, imagine what it would be like in the NHL. Only way I could ever see him play a full season is on a team who runs a 5 dman system anyway and have him play -10mins a game with the majority being on the PP.

As the shooter. You need to make that part perfectly clear. The fact that the Marlies had Brennan in charge of carrying the puck up and generating zone entries on the powerplay over Nylander is the most idiotic part of the marlies system.

Brennan is in the organization for one main reason and that is to help make the Marlies competitive in the AHL, and with those wins and success its designed for creating a development environment of others to grow as players.

Marlies & the prospect system doesn't have anyone currently capable of replacing Brennan and his role on the team.

They hope to ride him all the way to Calder Cup success for the benefit of other prospects being groomed for the NHL in the future.

The Leafs used to specialize in converting offensively skilled d- men into forwards... With huge success

Red Kelly, Wendel Clark, Gary Leeman in addition to Dempsey started on the blueline. I think it would be interesting to try him on the fourth line with a special role on the power play. How much worse could he be than some of our present 4th liners? I am pretty sure he would be useful on the pp.

He has played up front for the Marlies when they were short on forwards.

According the General Fanager, he has been on a ONE WAY contract the last 3 years.

ONE WAY means he makes the same whether in the NHL or AHL (i think).

He was at 600,000 a year his last 2 years and he is at 675,000 this year.

I look at it the way Mess looks at this; he's part of the development program of the Leafs in so much as he helps players develop on the Marlies by providing above average talent. I imagine (don't know) he's a good role model and helps young players become professional in other facets of the game.
He's well paid, maybe overpaid, (over 1.5 million over the last 3 years) and he gets to do what he loves.
I actually haven't seen the Marlies much and I also can't say I could evaluate his play to say if he's good enough to be a 5/6 NHL Dman but it seems he brings value to the organization in the role that he performs.

His salary does not affect the Leafs cap and as such, this is one of those areas where being a rich team can give you an advantage. I don't think many teams with internal caps can afford to pay AHLers 600,000 a year to help make the team more competitive. Just getting into the playoffs helps in the development of ALL OF THE PROSPECTS and I assume he contributes greatly to the likelihood that the Marlies will be playoff bound this year and likely next year if they keep him there in that role.

Do the Marlies use the same Leafs drop pass system to enter the Ozone on the power play like the Leafs do?
I'm not a fan of it btw.

Don't forget Jim Korn! The guy was a freight train when he got going

Yes drop pass to Nylander or Liepsic attacking with speed. Works better in the AHL

That's a very great point. He should have a job in player development after his playing days over then.

just to let you know, he has played forward for the marlies.

Yeah for a couple shifts because they are short on bodies. Not as a real experiment.

Every time I have watched him go forward he seems like he is dogging it. The coach shouldn't put up with that.

he's 6'1, 213 lbs

hilariously slow foot speed, not physical at all, makes lots of lazy turnovers

just speculation, but he should probably lose a few lbs

A lot of these stats are inflated for various reason I'm sure, my Dad met him in person and said he was one of the smaller guys on the team. My Dad is 6 feet tall.

The 1 Dman PP model now used by most teams including Leafs DEMANDS at least a fast Dman and preferably an above average speed Dman
as they face a lot of 1 on 1s.
Thats how I view the new PP model.
Can TJ be that guy?
If hes not PP specialist I am reading on here he
doesnt add much at all.

Speed of the game

It's amazing to see the speed of the game. On television it doesn't really show how little time players have to make decisions.
I attend junior games, Marlies games and NHL games. What a difference!! It's great going to the Marlies games as you can always get a great seat. As fast as it is, the NHL is even quicker.

One reason why some great juniors never make pros and some great AHLers can't crack the NHL.
