And making what, $12+M on his next deal? C'mon.
All the while no showing in the playoffs.

Anyone know of players Ruff has coached who may be available either via UFA or trade? One of the perks of hiring a well renowned coach is he has a lot of connections and respect from players around the league. It may help pull in UFAs or, if we're lucky, maybe even lead to a player waiving their NMC.

Going off the 31 thoughts rumors from last trade deadline, how do folks feel about this trade?

Laughton + Cates = Krebs + Joki

It fills our bottom 6 center positions and opens up a RHD position that most folks here wanted to fill anyway, with Joki leaving as part of their offseason plans.

You do this move and then bring in one more punishing 4th line winger and middle-pairing RHD via UFA and you're on your way to giving Lindy a real roster to work with.

No Laughton.

I think the hate on Marner is unfounded.

Guy gets Selke votes every year, is a solid penalty killer, and has put up 48 points in 53 playoff games, all while every team Toronto plays in the playoffs up until this year had employed the strategy to shadow him and Matthews with their top checkers and best defensive pairs and force Nylander and Tavares to beat them.

It's crazy watching the games how little space Matthews and Marner had the past few playoffs when they take the ice with defensive specialists glued to them.

Two years ago, he 8 points and was +3 in Toronto's 7 game playoff series loss to Tampa (which they lost due to depth, not Marner). Last year he had 14 points in 11 games and was +7.

This year playing with Knies and Tavares, the points aren't there through 3 games, but I think expectations of what a player should put up playing with a 21 and a 33 year old are unrealistic.

If Buffalo had Marner instead of Skinner at just 2M more per season, I think they are a lock to make the playoffs

So, in situations were teams just outright terminate contracts for 'cause' (like Mike Richards, Corey Perry), the NHL typically allows teams to and then it goes to arbitration.

It's less than a buyout but they don't get a get out of jail free card either.
So essentially training camp in multiple countries and then we try to put illegal drugs in his bags at the airports?

To me this looks like last years wishlist but I guess top 6 forward could mean any forward position.

I think we need to replace Mitts with a top 6 center, add a 3C and 4C.
Cozens can be moved to wing and become the top 6 winger we need.

We are still missing a top 4D and a decent goalie.

Foligno was signed to 4 years extension by their bill guerin. Not only has it not officially began. He has a radioactive nmc dating back to this season. Meaning their gm isn’t trading a player just given extensions which hasn’t started and foligno isn’t waiving

Will fix everything
Listening to Lindy's interview, he mentions four dangerous lines. Thinking back to 05-06, when he coached another very young team scattered with vets- I vaguely remember young players scattered across all 4 lines.

He also mentioned players making themselves uncomfortable. For example, if someone struggles blocking shots or playing defense- he wants those players to shift out of their comfort zone, start doing those things, and become a better player.

So, in my mind, he's going to want all four lines being at least adequate defensively. I dont think we'll see another Skinner-Thompson-Tuch esque line. It's more likely he'll put his version of Grier and Hecht on scoring lines. Didn't Grier play with Drury and Hecht with Briere in 05-06?

I'm actually getting excited for next season. I believe Lindy is going to want a couple of role players added, and his lineup choices should be intriguing.

That team wasn’t that young. 2005-06 Buffalo Sabres Roster, Stats, Injuries, Scores, Results, Shootouts | Hockey-Reference.com

Most of the roster was prime age (25-28) with a few in the in their early 20s. Nothing like the youth we have now en masse.

Any of these in NHL next season?

Kulich
Savoie
Rosen
Ostlund
As starters, I hope not. But I do think Kulich and Rosen are first call ups. I need to see more consistency from both Rosen and Kulich before I’m giving them a spot, as I feel their games dropped in the middle of the year sharply.

Ostlund and Savoie should be in Rochester as well as I think they should get a full year in the AHL.

But that’s my opinion and I hold the thought of not giving spots until they look more like a finished product than we have seen from called up prospects.
