It's more than official.

To miss, the Isles would have to finish 0-4 and Montreal finish 4-0 (or 3-0-1 depending on tiebreakers).
While you're right that it almost certainly will happen, it's not official until we clinch. 2 points for us or if Montreal drops 2, and we've done it.

Not sure if this was mentioned before but what is the tiebreaker between the Isles and Pens for home ice in the first round?

If tied in points and ROW which would be likely, the season series is tied.
Is it then goal differential for the season? Pens are +8 on us?

Hypothetical:

Suppose the last game against WAS is tied near the end of regulation, and the Isles need a regulation win to take the division. Do they pull the goalie and risk giving up an empty-netter and losing the game?

Oh, and if they lose the game in regulation, the Isles drop to #3 and PIT has home ice in their series.

:)

For some reason I'm feeling good about FLA's chances against WAS on April Fools Day.

And PIT has to play the DET juggernaut (suddenly) twice more.

I wouldn't give up home ice in round one in a last ditch effort to try and get it for rounds 1 and 2. Too risky.

Protect home ice. Do not risk finishing 3rd.

Yeah. It’s sort of the same reason the Caps wouldn’t do what someone suggested yesterday. I saw someone post the Caps might not bench guys against us if division is clinched if they could still get more points than Calgary. You don’t risk injury to key players to try and get home ice in a series that may not occur. The bruins don’t matter. Because they didn’t win their division the Caps will have home ice against them anyway. That’s a rule that should be changed I think. Division status shouldn’t matter in the conference final vs another divisional team

I wonder if instead of re-seeding, what if it went to head to head record against opponents in the other division? Whoever won the season series between Boston and say the Islanders gets home ice in the playoffs if they were to meet. Would never happen, but might make some games more interesting during the season...probably not though.
