Well you can't really compete against Canada with that roster but all other teams are winnable.

Great first line, some good depth for 2nd & 3rd lines, solid goaltending. Depth on D worries me a bit though. Very young team, especially G and D.

Just as long as they split Mäntymaa, Korhonen and Laakso on different pairings, the defense will be great, the others are very good at filling in. Kuukka is also very good.

Forwards are great, very good role players and some good scorers. And finally there is Nabb

If that weight is his current weight then he hasn't gained much, if at all. Some stats had him at 187/78, but I think the height is a couple of years old so that weight could be as well.

On the team as a whole, I don't know much about some of these guys, but I do like the number of rightys in both defensemen and forwards.

Piispanen looked very thin in Sweden a couple of weeks ago, so those figures could be correct.

As for my No. 1 favourite on the Finnish team (Kim Nabb), does anyone know why he takes so ridiculous short shifts? He is arguably the most physical player on this team and plays with a great deal of intensity, but his shifts in the U20 tournament in Sweden were like 15 seconds long, compared to his linemates who stayed on the ice for at least an additional 15 seconds. Stamina or injury problems in the past?

EDIT: I am glad Keränen did not make the team. He was quite similar to Nabb, only he had absolutely no offensive game, and aside from his physical game he was just plain awful IMO.

I really like the finnish team. Very big sized. Better forwards than Sweden has but worse defense imo. Goalkeepers are pretty equal.

Probably the biggest team of the tournament, some very physical players but also enough skill & speed.

I'm starting to like this team more and more.

His body looks built to be thin. I think he'll max out at 190 lbs.



The lines could be something like

Korpikoski - Nokelainen - Tukonen

At first it would seem like a good idea to spread out the offense and have someone other than Korpikoski, like Joensuu, to complete the line, but Korpikoski can't produce that much offense by himself anyway.

Marjamäki - Piispanen - Tenkanen

This line could actually be extremely strong if it weren't for Tenkanen's injury and Piispanen enjoyed a better fall.

Joensuu - Nabb - Seitsonen

Piling up the rest of the offense here.

Nurmi - Riska - Hokkanen

The fourth line wouldn't have a natural center (?), but there's no way I'd let Makkonen play. He's the weakest link.


Honkaheimo - Mäntymaa

Traditionally the backbone of the age group.

Korhonen - Laakso

Should work out fine in U20 as well.

Kuukka - Hietanen

It comes down to who will play more, Hietanen or Tieranta. Defensemen of Hietanen's kind have lost Finland WJC tournaments in the past, but he completements Kuukka better.

I really can't understand why Ville-Vesa Vainiola was left outside the squad. He is very good center. He leads the junior A in scoring (making 1,5 points per game) and has helped his not-so-good linemates to the top twenty also.

Another notable player missing is Juhamatti Aaltonen.

I am glad to see two players from Pori in the team. Last time it was 1995 when Tommi Rajamäki and Timo Salonen were chosen. After that there have been max only one selection per year from here.

Vainiola had chances with the national team back when he wasn't that blazing hot yet. He was with the U19 in the last national team games but apparently just couldn't perform at this level.

With those two and the injured Pasi Salonen missing, it's easy to see that the age group's strength was offensive depth.

Nurmi is there for the experience and Riska is a good worker drone, but Hokkanen is a bit of an in-between with neither enough defense nor offense. I would've liked to see a better role player there in Uusivirta, and Makkonen replaced as I implied. Other than those, the choices were pretty much perfect.

It's likely that either Nabb or Makkonen plays fourth line center. In the former case, Tenkanen will probably move to the middle and Nurmi will take his place together with a bigger role.
